Hey BlazinEmerald welcome.gif Good to have you with us. You've got a great attitude - and as Tyravis pointed out, that's our greatest tool. We can have so much knowledge, but unless our attitudes are such that we are motivated to do something with that knowledge, we are no better of than someone totally ignorant of how to lose weight and be healthy. And, way to go on your initial weight loss! Keep it up! smiley_wave.gif
  • WELCOME BlazinEmerald. You will love it here and find great encouragement!

Thanks Stillkristi for the thumbs up. :flowerforyou: and that info on fitness. I was just sticking to cardio, but I think I will incorporate the strength training too on the days I don't cardio. I have read that it is good to mix things up a bit, to keep your body guessing and to avoid it becoming too routine. I hear that also works with the caloric intake.

Tyravis, way the go getting back on track. I would love to be able to Tae Kwon Do!!! and I do also find that having a GREAT ATTITUDE is key. Every morning before getting out of bed, I say to myself: I will have a great day today... and music helps me a lot too.

Ok, time for my workout.. Catch you guys later.

Stillkristy, you are right, this thread rocks! I was so annoyed at myself that I did not have a chance to check in last night... I am weird like that... lol.

Oh, and I weighed myself this morning... could not help it, i was starting to worry that I was not on track, (even though I have not changed the plan or cheated)... but I was reassured that I am still on track. :blushing: Now I am back to doing it every monday! I think when I get more comfortable and sure that the weight will keep coming off, I will just stick with my doctor visit weigh ins. That will be one less thing to worry about!!!

I've been at this since January. I'm losing about a pound a week. Is this unrealistic? Just curious as to what your take is on this since I posted. Just really curious.

It seems like a dropped a lot of weight suddenly but I was on a med that was causing me to retain water and go up instead of down. So it seems like my weight dropped too fast but in reality it hasn't.

Hi, Falcon, good to see you again. I can relate to your question. My first week, I lost 11 pounds. I was so excited I was dancing around! fatbellydancer.gif But, then, when things didn't go like that every week, I was kinda bummed. Silly, but there you have it. So, I have had to reframe that, and I have arrived at the place msarro is: This isn't a diet, its my life. A good friend from another thread, cmriverside said to me, "You are strong enough to save your life. In fact, you're the only one that can." So, thats where I am today - saving my life.

Having said that, I was reading just yesterday on Tom Venuto's website. He said that the notion we can lose a pound or two a week is a general guide, based on the average number of pounds average folks can and do lose. He suggested that it might be better if we think of it in terms of percentage of our total body weight. So, if you are like me, you can maybe expect to lose 4 or almost 5 pounds a week. IF you are doing everything else right :blushing: Everything else right would be eating four to six small, healthy meals a day, spaced at 2 to 3 hour intervals, exercising at least 2 or 3 times a week, but hopefully more like 4 or 5 and drinking lots of water, at least a gallon a day and getting adequate rest. All of those things are critical to getting our sluggish metabolisms working again. Other factors to consider are age, gender, medications being taken, other health issues and for women, where we are in our monthly cycle.

How is that for not really answering your question? The bottom line is, there are a lot of other factors to consider. Also, its natural to fluctuate, maybe as much as 5 lbs a day (I can't remember where i read that, but I think it was something Banks said.) So, having said that [nods and winks  at 4suredistime} we need to remember not to get discouraged if the day we weigh, we have not lost anything, or even gained a pound.  Better measures of our success might be some clothing that used to fit tight, or we couldn't even get into - the tape measure, and generally how we feel.

Oh, I almost forgot, an important part of the equation is the calorie deficit thing. MFP figures your calorie deficit based on the number of pounds you tell it you want to lose in a week. AND, it only goes as high as 2 pounds a week. Again, if you are like me, with a lot of weight to lose, the number of calories MFP suggests you eat in a day is pretty high - mine is currently at 2350. Well, I can't eat that many calories if I am eating healthy. I can easy do it if I am eating the crap I used to eat. So, I wind up eating about 1700 calories in a day when I am eating healthy. I feel full and I have plenty of energy. When I first started, I was trying to eat closer to 1200 a day. I often got headaches and I didn't really feel very energetic. So, for those of us that need to lose a lot of weight, we can eat below our recommended calories, but not so low that we don't have any energy. And, if we eat below the recommended calories (remember, MFP figures a calorie deficit in to that number, then we can expect to lose more than a pound a week. Always remembering that as we get closer to our goal, it will be harder to take off.

My BMR is about 2129 when I first started, now it's down to 2075. I was consuming about that much for the past couple of weeks, upped my walking to 3.29 miles a day and I strenth train about 3 times a week for about 20 - 25 minutes.

It took a while to convince my body that it's okay to start losing the weight. I'm in my fourth month and I very rarely feel the need to binge anymore. Aunt Flo's come to visit me this week :grumble:

I drink 8 cups min of water a day and was expecting my weight to start dropping a little because my heart rate stays between 126 to 133 sometimes it goes upto 138 but that's when I'm climbing up a slight hill for a short time. It used to go between 146 - 158. So I'm making a lot progress in that area but I wasn't dropping weight very fast but was dropping inches instead.

I think I'm at the point in my walks where I'm burning fat which for me is between 123 to 130 for burning fat. Anything above that is building muscle, that's what the nutritionist at work told me.

I try to consume as much food as possible for the most part. I mostly eat between 1800 to 2100 cals a day and it's good stuff too like rice, pasta, I switched from ice berg lettuce to using baby spinach in my salads, I put in tomatoes and cucumbers, with a whole carrot, green onions, celery, green pepper with 2 tablespoons of dressing which brings that salads count close to 200 cals.

I started eating raw whole almonds on a regular bases, I eat apples with peanut butter, banana and peanut butter sandwiches mmmmmmmmm I didn't used to eat banana's with peanut butter but it's just as good as the rest of it.

I eat waffles with syrup, honey nut cheerios with either banana slices or strawberry slices. I started dousing yogurt with low fat whipped cream it's yummy

I joined up with the Biggest Loser Club and they sent me three books, one of them was the family cook book and they have tons of ideas in there about low calorie dinners and low calorie lunchs and breakfasts even dessert, I'm beginning to enjoy dessert again.

If I buy out of the cafeteria I buy fruit parfaits, cheese and crackers, stir fry or pasta stir fry, chicken wraps with fries and gravy.

I eat inbetween meals with all bran fiber bites, fiberone oats and chocolate, almonds, nature valley crunch almonds, or strawberry with yogurt bottoms.

I eat a three oz fresh piece of fish once a week. I cut out chips, pop, burger king, McDonalds, Wendy's. I drink the occasional cup of juice. I drink tea a lot more often. I occasionaly eat pizza instead of all the time now.

Hi everyone, I hope you are having a glorious Sunday. Its beautiful here in Salt Lake. We often don't get much of a spring - it goes right from cold and dreary to hot, hot, hot!! There aren't too many days like today that are just right - so after this post, I am going outside for a while.

A couple of things people have said have had me thinking of food, and specifically changes I need to make to make this a new life, not just a diet. When I am slacking, {ahem} when I used to slack off, I would eat primarily junk food - soda, chips, etc. The obvious changes I made initially were to give up soda (I hate diet, so I gave it up entirely) and chips, popcorn etc. For a while, I replaced soda with crystal light - but I am cutting down on the crystal light, too, and drinking primarily water. I got a filter for my kitchen sink and it makes a great difference. I was raised on well water, so the chlorine and floride in city water doesn't taste natural to me. I've replaced chips with nuts (sparingly eaten, and always measured) and some crackers, like Kashi or True North. Sometimes for crunch, I will eat celery, turnips or even iceberg lettuce! I know iceberg isn't the prefered lettuce, but it has a nice crunch factor.

However, I also really love to cook, especially Italian. Southern Italian cooking is a lot about pasta and tomatoes. Northern is about rice, creamy sauces, etc. So, here are some modifications I've been making in my Italian cooking. A variety of vegitables instead of pasta. Zucchini sliced thin (I use a mandolin or even a peeler) and sauted in a little olive oil is a great substutute for pasta. Spaghetti squash also. I am trying to incorporate miracle noodles (japanese shiritaki noodles) but so far, I haven't gotten them to work very well. Cauliflower grated is a great substitute for rice in risottos. Cabbage, sliced in strips can be used in liu of fettuccini. I've cut down on the olive oil I use and pretty much eliminated the bread, except for special occasions and then in small quantities. For breading on something like chicken parmagiana, I use crushed nuts, and I am going to try some crushed Kashi crackers. I don't like cheese substitutes or low fat cheese, the consistency is off for me, not to mention the flavor, so I am very careful with my cheese consumption, and I eat real cheese. Desserts were never my downfall, so I don't miss them. Just lately, I am finding I really need to plan out what I am going to eat or I wander into the kitchen aimlessly - and thats a bad thing!

The main thing I do is try to eat regularly, every two to three hours. If I don't do this, I will binge.

I would like to hear what others are doing to modify their favorite foods, and what works for them. Thanks for being here to share your knowledge and success!

I'm relearning to cook for myself again, trying out new recipes from the BLC cook book, I freeze the rest of the left overs so it's dinner for a week :D

My cupboards are slowly being restocked with spices again. I've been really bad. I'm getting new spice containers to put them in. I got a new container for rice and another for pasta.

I love to add in ginger root and garlic (fresh) into my meals, it gives it such a nice taste to it.

I've replaced chips with nature valley granola bars. I've replaced pop and juice with water, and I buy a 10 liter jug of spring water instead of the single bottles on occasion, I do have a water brita filter and it gets a serious work out day by day.

I'm relearning how onions make people cry

I'm eating nuts more often then I used too, I'm thinking about making a tofu recipe at some point. I love to bake a raw piece of fish that hasn't been altered.
  • Hello there, and happy Sunday to you too. Over here in GA, or at least in Dacula (minus the r  ) it's been overcast all day and now its drizzling. I was indoors all day, but did not mind cause I had lots of work to catch up on.

It is great that you two get to cook and come up with your own recipes. I will take notes for when I get to my maintenance phase. Right now I am strictly following the plan my physician gave me and the great thing is he sells the foods I get to eat at his office... so no cooking for me for a while. This was way easier for me since my schedule is quite hectic these days.

What you two are having sounds yummy though... Even though I can have diet soda, like stillkristi, I don't like the taste so i stay away from it. And I can't have juices, so, I pretty much stick to water.

Well ladies, I hope you have a great evening and a very bright morning. Don't forget the music and the singing!!! lol.

  • Good Morning everyone!

So, the weekend went well. I had my niece's Birthday party this weekend and planned my day accordingly. Had a light breakfast, enjoyed a slice of pizza and a huge salad and fit in a small piece of icecream cake, still leaving plenty of calories for dinner and an aftenoon snack.

Hubby doesn't get it this time. I'm going to do this with or without the proper support from him. Calling me out at the birthday party, insisting that one day won't kill me isn't exactly the encouragment I was looking for , but it made me more determined. I just told him I could enjoy myself without stuffing my face and having the FOUR slices of pizza that he had. And my best friend was awesome in providing salad for me and being supportive.

I hope everyone had a good weekend and has a great week full of weight loss :flowerforyou:

Hello Everyone, I know I'm a little late in joining this group, but wondering if you could use another member. After all, they say better late than never:smile:

This is just the group I have been looking for. Although most of the advice on this site has been helpful, I didn't feel like I could really relate to the people who only had 20 or less pounds to lose. I am 5'9" and currently weighing in at 310 pounds. I have been on MFP for a couple of months with no weight loss success. I have however lost a couple inches around my waist. I just figured out that I am probably not eating enough because I have not been eating my exercise calories. Since I have been exercising about 5-6 days a week, and burning on average 800-1,000 calories per session, I am guessing that my metabolism now hates me. So this week, my goals are to make sure I am eating most if not all of my exercise calories if not all of them, and to drink all of my water. I would like to lose two pounds this week.

    Thanks for the great board

Welcome marlemcdougal!! It is great to have you with us! It sounds like there are so many possible reasons why you haven't lost weight yet - the most positive reason being you are converting fat weight to lean muscle weight, which is smaller by volume. So, your clothing and measuring tape might be better guages of your fat loss at first. If you look back in this thread a little, you will see an article I found called "Obese at 700 Calories a Day", or something like that. It has some good advice for those of us who have been pretty sedentary for a while and have been doing the yo-yo thing of starving then bingeing. So, keep sharing what works and what doesn't. There are some pretty successful people here, like msarro and AmyNVegas (if she will check back in   ) who have lost significant weight, so there is a lot of knowledge floating through this thread. Good Luck!!!

    Good Morning, Blaze!

Good job on planning for the weekend party and sticking to your plan. You_Rock_Emoticon.gif

That's too bad about your husband at the party. Sounds like he might be feeling a little insecure because you are so determined and dedicated and right now, he can't find that will for himself? I have heard a lot of people on this site talk about their loved ones not being supportive - after all you are disrupting the status quo, and most of us are not happy about change when it comes along. :ohwell: Is he the kind of guy you can sit down and talk to and just share how you feel about your weight loss goals? And, maybe reassure him that the two of you are still solid (if in fact that is true)?

Whatever happens, it sounds like your friend was supportive, and you have tons of support here!

Take care everyone, I am off to exercise and then to work. Have a great day!

Ya. that's exactly why I didn't specifically tell anyone that I was making some changes. My hubby doesn't deliberately sabbotage me, but at 5'10" and complaining that is weight "ballooned to" 165 lbs after he turned 40, he thinks he is "encouraging" me when he comments on what I eat or do. :grumble: At least he pretty much eats what I put in front of him, so he's figured out there is more fish and vegetables in his diet lately. I"m the kind of person who feels patronized by verbal support, so as long as he is quietly going along with the plan, I'm good.

    It's a deal Stillkristi...

I just came back from my weigh in and am down another 8lbs... 1 week!!! I could not believe it and they had to weigh me again. :drinker:
Now I really am convinced that exercising makes a world of difference. I only do 20-30 minutes of cardio, and now have started with the resistance training (thanks StillK:flowerforyou: ) So far so good. I will increase reps or weights as I go along (been reading up on it  )...
Ok, getting back to work... just was so elated I had to share. Catch you guys later.

Welcome to our little family!!! :flowerforyou: You will love it here. I know I do. You will get all the support you need here. I am 5'8 and started at 309... how funny, we are almost the same
Keep your head up my dear... your metab will speed up and you will be surprised at how the weight will come off. Are you perhaps on medications that are impeding your weightloss, or making you gain? are you eating the right foods? watching your carbs? Drinking enough water? Are you getting any help from a professional (nutritionist or physician)... I think it would be a good idea to have someone review what you are eating daily... Just a thought if you are not doing that already,

Personally I am following a plan with my Doctor, and he provides the meals, but my daily caloric intake is about 700 and I am so used to it now that I have to force myself to eat all the food on the list (guess my stomach is doing some shrinking). On exercise days, my calories are increased by what I burn.
I am also taking vitamins and supplements which are a must with my doc to make sure my body gets all that it needs. On top of that, I feel great! I am lucky that I have had no health issues in the past, beside being obese (I think I fall into the morbidly range :frown:, but i hate that word)...
Anyways, that was my thoughts when I read your message, and could not help but reply before logging off.

WAY TO GO BLAZE!!! Keep your head up girl. Don't let anyone deter you from your goal. You know you are doing a great thing, and in the end, they will all commend you for your determination and success!
I have it easy in that sense, cause right now I live alone, and make sure I stay away from tempting places. or people who are not health and diet conscious.

    Take care guys.

    Hi everyone!!

StillKristi had pm'd me about possibly posting in here for support. I haven't done so yet but wanted to now. At my highest weight, I was 270, so not quite 300, but pretty darn close!!

I used to think that even getting below 200 would be impossible. Not only did I do that but I also got to my goal weight of 135 (up a little now with pregnancy!! lol) and I didn't suffer. I hope I can instill hope in all of you that not only is it very possible but it doesn't have to take forever and you don't need to feel deprived.

The last thing I want is to seem "know-it-all" or anything because I don't know it all. All I know is what worked for me and I am happy to share that with you since it was done in a healthy and sensible way. This is the first time in my life that I feel confident I can keep this up forever. When I yo-yo dieted through my 20's, I never felt confident because deep down I knew I hadn't done it a healthy way that I could continue on with.

Best of luck and let me know if I can help in any way!! :flowerforyou:

Thanks, Tam! Your story is such a great one, because it really is a life change, not a diet. Thanks for all the positive energy and support!

I hope everyone is feeling positive and confident. 4suredistime, great progress. It sounds like your program with your Dr is pretty strict, but you are sticking to it, and thats cool. Do they have some kind of transition program for moving from the food the doc provides to food you purchase on your own? The more information we can get from informed sources, the better!

Also, kudos to msarro, he has started a couch to 5 K thread and it seems to be really active. Good job!

Everyone, let us know what's working, and what you feel like you need help on. Take care, and

Thanks for your story Tam, With stories like that I know I can get to my goal weight.
  • Looks like spring is finally here! It is motivating me to get some more outside exercise, and hopefully to be more active in general. Glad to see that so many of you are doing well, and want to offer my congrats on all the hard work we have done this winter.

I am really enjoying the chance to ride my bike to and from work, it makes me much more alert in the morning. I have been having some trouble sticking with my diet:ohwell: but am going to work on getting the focus back.

Talking about the recent thread regarding what changes we have made to keep our diets successful, I think the main one for me is about the length of my meals. It seems that I do much better if I really try to keep to food only with meals. If I am eating a little, frequently I have trouble. So I try to get my whole meal ready at once, and then eat it without too many distractions in about 1/2 an hour. This seems to make a big difference in how quickly I get hungry again too.

    Have a good week everyone!

I upped my calorie count to around 2100 in the last couple of days and dropped down another pound and half.

I burned 800 cals in 3.3 miles tonight. Crazy.

I finished 10 minutes sooner then I did on Sunday crazy huh?

That's awesome beat your time by 10 minutes and burned 800 cals GO YOU!

I'm feeling really positive these days. My husband just said he wanted ice cream, but didn't want to go buy it because he'd feel bad eatting it in front of me. I told him to go ahead and buy it if he wants it. I'm determined this time to make it work, I'm not finding it hard to resist things that I know aren't the healthiest for me to have. It's just sitting in the back of my mind " I CAN TOTALLY DO THIS" and I will  I've yet to stray, I'm not saying I won't ever , but as for now, I'm meeting my cals, I'm full and fullfilled and satisfied. I'm looking forward to getting on a scale in the next week or so. Right now I can't use my scale, the weight measurment doesn't go high enough so I'm using my friends and she isn't home all week, but that's ok too. I know Im doing well :flowerforyou:

    Good luck to you all

Increasing the calories to lose more is something that gets mentioned a lot, and obviously for good reasons! GOOD JOB!!! WTG!

Steinbergshal, maybe thats something you should look at? I don't know where you are with that, but I know for myself, when I skimp on calories, I pay for it later in cravings that can lead to binging! Good luck!

Blaze, thanks for your post, your resolution is really inspiring. Sounds like hubby is more supportive?

This is Fisher Tower, about 20 miles outside of Moab Utah. It is one of my favorite places on earth. It is one of the motivators that keeps me working on weight loss when I get discouraged. I want to hike here again. Anyone else have something that motivates them when they feel like giving up?
  • Blaze, thanks for your post, your resolution is really inspiring. Sounds like hubby is more supportive?

Well hubby and I had a talk. Basically it boiled down to me telling him I didn't appreciate his comments and if he couldn't be supportive to keep his trap shut lol. I know that sounds rude but he's one of those guys, gotta say it bluntly without the sugar coating before it sticks. He appologized and all is well

I know it's been said a million times before but my son keeps me motivated. He thinks mommy isn't fat, and gets quite upset if I say I am. I want and need to show him what healthy is. Hubby and I also want another child and I need to lose, to have a healthier pregnancy.

  • Hello everyone.

It's nice to see that we are all updating on the regular, it is great support!

StillK, indeed my diet is quite strict. It is after coming on here that I am learning a lot more than just what my Doc told me. I am sticking to his foods mainly cause they are easy, and I wanted to kick start my "lifestyle change" and my metabolism. But I do also have a list of what to stay away from and what is ok, and I will be back to cooking soon. I have an appointment with a nutritionist in 3 months, so that should be very helpful. Plus all the great advice I am getting here. I am a little less nervous than before about maintaining. I have never had these types of results b4, and I prematurely started to worry aobut keeping the w off.

And Tam thanks for joining our thread (great idea StillK:flowerforyou: ). I really like to hear about success stories and get input from them. And this time I did not have to go searching for one

Hope you are all having a great day.

Hey, Blazin - what a handsome little guy you got there! You've got some great motivation there! I hope others will share their motivation too!

4sure you're doing great!. When I first started, I would only eat pre-packaged items. I don't mean fake food, I mean I would buy portions that were already divided into single servings. So, when I had tilapia loin with lime and mango salsa, it was packaged and there was no guess work on nutritional information. I bought a box of individual butter pats. Very expensive, but I didn't have to guess at anything. Then, I invested in a good kitchen scale. I use it all the time. I measure everything, cuz I was so used to typical resturant portions, which are HUGE!

Now, I have a question for you all. Do you find yourselves having to modify exercises? What I mean is, I can't do push-ups so I do what I call "wall aways" Getting up and down from the floor is a major event, so I modify anything on the floor to be on a weight bench, or ball, or whatever. I am always looking fo new ideas, especially for lower body work, since I really can't do much walking until I lose more weight, and maybe get new knees. :ohwell: Any ideas would be welcomed! Thanks!
  • Hello everyone. Hope we are all having a happy Thursday!!! :flowerforyou:

StillK, you are looking great. Love the new pic. I almost did not recognize you! wow. What a big difference 24 lbs. makes... (have you not updated your ticker? )
And funny thing, I ordered my first scale yesterday... yay. Food scale that is! So I am getting ready to become chef supreme.
I even upped my calories too... and what a difference one extra meal makes. Well, I did exercise a tad longer too, but overall I felt great yesterday.

As for modifying exercise, I do leg lifts (if that's what they are called), instead of the standing kind, I do them sitting. They are really extensions. Sitting straight up in chair (not leaning against back of chair), feet together on the floor, and I lift both legs at same time... does that make sense? Holding the side of the chair helps with balance. I can't lift very high yet, but with time I guess I will. You can totally feel your thigh muscles working (specially inner part, major problem area for me :grumble: ) . I do this at work throughout the day (in total 3-4 reps of 16). Do both legs together, then one at a time. You will feel it, believe me!!! Then I work my arms, chest, back at home after cardio.
I can't do push-ups and don't think I will even attempt them... :noway: so good idea on the "wall always".
