Parent Bashing this week

Is it me or does it seem that there are many MFPr's bashing parents for overweight children?
As a parent of 3 young girls this has started to irritate me! First off, overweight adults need to take accountability for their own lives and quite blaming it on their parents and childhood. I don't care if it WAS your parents fault. Get over it! You are an adult now and can make changes on your own. If its not worth working for then it's not worth having! If you don't want to work for it then you don't want it bad enough and constantly blaming others for your situation is getting you nowhere!
Second, I am getting tired of MFPr's that have no children bashing parents for their kids poor eating habits simply by seeing a child eating mac and cheese in a restaurant when they appear to be overweight children or judging a parent for running through a drive through and feeding their kid awful fast food.
If you don't know the entire situation you can NOT judge! You have NO IDEA where they are coming from. How do you know that the amount of food they are eating isn't half the amount that they used to eat! Everyone has to start somewhere and as a parent you can not just take EVERYTHING out of your childs diet or they are going to HATE you! You wouldn't expect an adult to just quite smoking in one day so why would you expect a CHILD to stop overeating or eating junk in one day! Besides we all know that you can go health crazy and cut everything from your diet but if you don't LEARN how to control your portions, cravings and choices the healthy way then the second you look at a cookie you are going to gain weight!
Third, it is CHRISTMAS for crying out loud and all of this hatefulness toward others is making me so sad. What happened to love and peace and harmony? Give a person a hug and tell them Merry Christmas instead of looking at them and judging every item on their plate!
Maybe a simple gesture of kindness will give a person the confidence they need to feel good enough to make changes in their life rather than seeing your horrible faces and feeling even more down about themselves!
Just saying! It makes me sad and I hope that some of the other MFPr's will think about what they are saying to others.....it wasn't so long ago that all of us were the fat people making others feel gross about our food choices!
May you all Have a Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New year but please remember that being healthy means in body and MIND so don't pass your negativity on.

Spot-on! I definitely agree!
EDIT: Meant to include this: when we dine out, usually its a treat which means 'it doesnt happen all the time so Im going to enjoy it"-type of going out to dinner.... I know it will be for me tonight! And MFP allows me to hold myself accountable right down to the margarita I configure IN to my meal...0 -

CLEARLY these children need to be taken away from their parents immediately. They may as well have a loaded gun on the table!!
/crazy0 -
*Sigh* Agreed. I think people from both sides need to just let it go and settle into some nice peace, harmony, and christmas cheer. Period.0

Well said. Personally I'd rather interact with someone (at any age) who was 'just' overweight, rather than a liar, thief, rapist, or murderer.
Poor eating habits are the least of things to judge a person on.0 -

So true.....
I think many times we are so judgmental of our parent's rearing of us, that we forget that we will need grace from our kids when they are grown and we realize what we did wrong.

I heart you!! I have two boys with sensory issues with lock out pretty much anything not chicken nuggets or fries. I am finding tricky ways to feed them but I also have to allow them the stuff sometimes. I don't want it to be the forbidden fruit or they will battle weight later. BTW just so folks know, children with developmental disabilities have a much higher risk of obesity for not apparant reason...and may look completely typical. If you see these habits in someone you care about try to suggest new things and ideas...0

yeah I noticed all the parent bashing too, gosh I hope I raised my kids to take responsibility for themselves and they don't blame me for everything that could and might go wrong in their lives!! My feeling is that much of the bashing is coming from people without kids too.....weird.0

As a teacher I see overweight kids get picked on all the time, I do not bash their parents, but I do take extra time to talk about nutrition in my classroom and set a good example by eating a healthy breakfast and lunch with them. Most of my students are low income and the truth is, cheap food is junk food, it costs a lot more to bring home tons of fresh food and quality meat and when you live below the poverty line, sometimes going the extreme healthy just is not a choice. But I do think we need to educate children on making good choices and also getting them exercising! I take brain break dailiy and we exercise, so many of them need it. I used to get angry that they did not go out and play, but when their neighborhoods are filled with gang bangers and drive bys, I do not think I would let my kids go out side and play either.
Always try to live a day in someone elses shoes before you judge them!0 -

Maybe its because I lost my mom 3 years ago that I have no tolerence for parent bashing! Did she do everything perfect...heck no! She did her best though and it sure would be nice to have her around to ask a few questions NOW as I try to raise my own kids. Did it ever occur to anyone to look at the GOOD things their parents did for them??? We would not be who we are without our parents and they aren't going to be around forever so quite bashing them....and all of us that are trying our best to raise happy healthy (non-judgemental) children!0 -
I have a mobidly obese 15 year old son. I know he is fat, he knows he is fat, and he claims he is happy and comfortable in his own skin. I have tried to explain to him the health risks of being obese. He does not care. I don't buy a lot of snacks like chips and candy and cakes and cookies ( Notice they all start with "C") . I buy healthy snacks fruits veggies I allow popcorn. But when he sits down and eats a half of box of cereal at one time what am I to do? I can't be a food Nazi all the time. If I buy cheese, he will eat almost the entire package at once. It is a losing battle!!! I just wanted to share!
Merry Christmas!!!0 -
