I'm an intern at a Quarter Horse breeding facility. I mostly train but am learning a lot about breeding and management too. I couldn't be happier. I want to find something just like this, but paid ahaha. I'm in the process of sending off a few resumes.
I have a bachelor's in animal sciences. Am I glad I have it? Yes. It gave me a few connections, helped me get this internship, and I'm sure it'll be an extra edge in gaining a client here and there. Would I have gone into debt for it? No. I am very lucky that my parents were willing and able to pay for my education.
My field is one where having a degree is nice but it's not the norm nor is it necessary.
I think the key to a successful educational experience is not just to get educated but to get involved. Make as many connections as you can, have a long list of people you can ask to vouch for your awesomeness when it comes time to apply for a job. Get to know your advisor and professors, find a job in your field working in a lab or whatever, join a team, TA, etc. Be willing to work for experience, not pay.
In the end, school helped me get this internship, which will in turn help me greatly in finding a paying job. I have learned more useful skills doing this internship for 8 months than I did in 4 years of school.0 -

I used to work in film production, which is what I went to college for. I've worked on some really high profile movies and was paid decently, but it was too stressful for me and I had no life. I also managed to gain 30 pounds in 3 years. Now I work for an athletic clothing company and I couldn't be happier! The company culture is really motivating for me.0

Currently and for the last 7 years I work in Sales for home improvements (roofing, windows, gutters, insulation). Somewhat flexible hours, meet new peole every day, making more money than ever before.
Previously I owned an auto restoration company. Great to be Boss, too many long hours, too many government headaches, sold the business after 7 years.
Also have worked in travel operations and misc other things over the last 35 years. I have some college and no I don't regret not getting a degree. I'm doing fine without it...I own 2 houses and a condo in Florida.0 -

I'm substitute teaching and working at Old Navy. My degrees are in trombone, piano and intercultural studies. No, I'm not using my degrees, but I've been able to travel a ton. I love subbing, and am considering going back to get a Master's of Teaching degree (it's designed for people with an undergrad degree in something other than teaching). Now, I couldn't have gotten this subbing job without a degree, and doing the subbing has helped me decide that I'm pretty sure I want to be an elementary school teacher. AND, my INCL degree helped me learn that I enjoy teaching ESL. This MT degree would allow me to also be able to get certified to teach ESL.
All this to say, I enjoy my jobs, and believe that everything happens for a reason.0 -

I'm a certified personal trainer, group exercise instructor, and sports nutritionist. I've been doing the personal training and group exercise for 15 years and the nutrition for 5. With those certifications, I've done everything you can in a gym setting without a degree in exercise science. So, I went back to school and just completed my classwork for a bachelors of science in exercise physiology with a minor in nutrition. I have an internship in the spring and then I graduate. My internship will be working in the cardiac rehab department of our local hospital. Basically, all the certifications you can get without a degree only allow you to work with people without disease or injury. My degree will allow me to get advanced certifications so I can work with individuals with various diseases, injuries, professional athletes, etc. It will also allow me to work in a hospital setting and eventually get my doctorate in physical therapy if I want. (The doctorate is required to be a PT now.) I will be starting my masters of science in exercise science in August so that I can learn even more of the specifics of exercise for various populations and how to do research in how exercise can help the body heal from various illness and injuries. I'm currently torn on what my doctorate will be, though. I'd thought when I went back to school that I wanted to do the DPT so that I had some job security since people will always have injuries that their insurance company will pay a PT for, but after some of my professors asking me to come back and teach with them because of how well I explained things to my classmates, I'm leaning toward the PhD in Public Health and being a college professor in exercise science classes while doing research. Who knows, I may one day find a cure for cancer through exercise and nutrition.0

I'm a SAHM--have been for 11+ years. I have a BA and MA in English (lit).
Hmmm....I don't regret my degrees, but it would have been smarter to do it differently. That is, I should have made sure to get certified as a teacher when i was in college--even if it was a dbl major with a degree in education AND a degree in English from the liberal arts side. It would have made many more jobs open to me.
However, i was able to teach at the college level b/c of my degrees. I really enjoyed that!
Now that I am raising my own children, I look at education very differently. I don't think they necessarily have to go to college/4 yr univ. There are many other routes to career success and happiness. My goals for them are that they be able to support themselves financially and emotionally--to be productive, independent, uniquely contributing individuals. And there are many ways to reach those goals.
Also, one of my friends, who found her calling as a special ed teacher in her 40s (vs using her marketing degree from her 20s), shows that you may come into your own at a different period in your life.
She is also the mother of 3 girls. She and her husband have this motto for them--when they finish schooling, they should be able to say I am a _____ and I can _____. For example, I am an architect and I can design office buildings. The point is to keep a focus and to have something they can actually do.
You're smart to give it serious thought. Such consideration is bound to serve you well. Good luck!0 -
I am a Labor and Delivery nurse in a small rural hospital. LOVE my job. Always knew this is what I wanted to do. Would have finished school the first go round and partied less if I knew than what i know now.....0

Well, I graduated in May with a Music Business degree. I haven't found work in that field, because it's a nearly impossible field to get into. Stupid me. However, I'm currently working at a Dave & Buster's where I do a bit of everything, but mainly work the front desk, hostess, and bowling/ billiard rentals. It's nothing special, but it's a job and it pays the rent and my student loans. LOL And I love my coworkers as well as the managers I have.0

I'm an English professor with a specialty in medieval literature. I love my job! It's hard work and it took a long time to get here, but I don't regret it at all. I love to teach and mentor students and I love to write, so it's the perfect job for me.0

I'm an Operations Specialist and we provide IT solutions to our clients through managed deskside support services.
My history: I started out as tech support level 2, then moved into level 3. Went on to be a systems engineer (MCSE) and came back to my old company managing deskside support techs in the field, ensuring processes are followed and deadlines are met. Lots of reporting and conference calls, but all boringness aside, I like what I do and we'll see where I decide to take it in this upcoming year!0 -

I'm a full-time nanny to two awesome kids, a 5 year old girl and a 21 month old boy. It's a blast. It has its stresses (the little one is hitting his terrible twos hardcore), but honestly it's the best job I've ever had. I get paid to play, seriously. During the summer, I take them to the zoo, splash pad, science museum, etc. Their parents pay my admission as well as the kids, so I get in essentially for free.
No degree, but 8 years of experience working with kids in various capacities - babysitter, preschool teacher, nanny, and so on.0 -

I have my degree in sign language interpreting. i did that for a few years, and loved it. Then i had babies, and the schedule didn't work with daycare, so i quit. I worked for an architecture and engineering firm as an asst. to the VP for 5 years. That was the best job ever. i worked part time, and was able to pretty much set my schedule. Now, i stay home with my kids, and i make dolls and sell them through a non-profit, with part of the proceeds going to the np, and I also work as an editor, mostly editing novels. It's nice that i can do both of the jobs i currently have from home while raising my kids. I love it!!0
