    Thanks for this thread. I've been on MFP since September and would love to be friends with more 50+ folks. This is an amazing place for all the newcomers. Lots of good ideas. I especially like the receipe feature when calculates the micro and macro nutrition elements per serving - it's great AND you can share with MFP easily if friends ask.

    Happy New Year to all! I'm 50 and I also have hypothriodism. I joined MFP when I got tired of yo-yoing and decided to get serious about losing the excess fat once and for all. I have been every happy with the support I see here.

    I would love to join this challenge!

    While I've been on the board for awhile, I haven't made the time to get involved in the community, so to speak. I'll be 60 in 6 weeks, so this weight loss thing is such a challenge! A loss of 25 pounds would be a good thing for me. My broad goals for the year:

    Love bigger
    Live fuller
    Pray harder

    As far as weight loss. portion control is the key for me, so I need to get back to regular journaling. Hopefully, this will be a slimmer year for all of us! Looking forward to getting to know you all thru the year. I don't post daily so will see you when I can.

    so frustrated with the vet. We went and picked up Kiera today and she was supposed to be in a little cedar box to match my other dog but they made a mistake and put her in an urn.:grumble: Now we have to go back so they can fix the problem but we aren't sure when we will have time. I am also getting sick. the sinus and chest thing is storming my body. :explode:

    :bigsmile: we are starting off the new year with an Isagenix cleanse day....we use this day of lower calories as a day of rest and relaxation (naps, yoga, simple chores, reading, movies, etc). Tomorrow we'll renew our good strategies of healthy eating, more exercise, and continuing to learn more about staying healthy.

    :bigsmile: I am almost finished reading "Younger Next Year for Women" and I highly recommend it.......while some of the suggestions are radical and challenging, there is so much good information that has inspired me to continue to improve my diet and exercise. Last year, I fell into a pattern of reading books that were more inspirational and balancing them with the murder mysteries that I love. The other book I recommend is "The Thin Commandments Diet" which was recommended to me by a woman on this thread.
    :heart: long walks. i walk them first thing in the morning before my brain and body have a chance to consider doing anything different. What started as a 20 minute walk in April has grown into a two hour walk and there is frequently another 20-40 minute walk in the afternoon.

    :sad: this morning I got phone calls from three friends---one is working on a plan to get her kids back from her mother-in-law, another just lost her job and is working on a plan to look for a new job, and the third is trying to sell her house in Minnesota and just found out this morning that the offer she accepted fell through because the buyer couldn't get a loan.......it made me very grateful for my life

    hello again - yea,....day two lol....I did 15 minutes on my Health Rider (cardio) then 3 x 10 sets lat pull down, 3 x 10 sets chest press and maybe 8 minutes on my treadmill on an incline - then while I was walking on the treadmill - started to see all the stuff that needed cleaning up down there and spent almost 2 hours moving the washer and dryer and cleaning up around the basement....that's the most exercise I've done in almost a year! :happy: I'm sure I'll pay for it tomorrow but at the time - I felt pretty good - my knees will beg to differ right now but all is good

    BUT now because I tracked the exercise and and hour as light house work I still have too many calories to eat today and it's already 7pm :frown: I don't want to eat just because this system is telling me I have to eat especially when I'm not hungry.

    what do you do at times like this? I've never really been a big eater - I just eat really fast and all the wrong things .... :embarassed:

    I've been eating really well for the last two days and have already planned my breakfast and lunches at work for the rest of the week so hopefully the 'habits' will come back sooner rather than later. AND I'm also trying to eat slower and give my brain and stomach a chance to catch up to what I'm eating so I don't get 'over stuffed':explode:

    anyway - I'm just glad I'm here and don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.... :heart: :heart: :heart:

    I just realized that even tho barbie is so great about putting the year on the thread's name, someone just posted to the old thread!

    Got a call from the vet today. Just as we expected, Bonnie has ovarian tissue. He wants to get it out asap, so she goes to his office tomorrow.

    Did an hour of extreme pump today. Tomorrow I'll do a downloadable workout for the spin bike. Then, in the afternoon, play mahjongg.

    After taking the weight class, I got the bangs on my hair cut, stopped at one food store to see if they carried my pancake mix (they don't) and found out that they discontinued Vince's yogurt so I had to go to another store to get his yogurt and buttermilk. I portion it out into one cup measurements and then freeze that since there is no way I could use up a whole container before its expiration date. Came home, then went practice bowling then stopped at some stores. Actually, I wanted to go to one store since they advertised that they had Christmas items on sale. Really, they didn't have much (and this is an expensive store) but I did get a few tops for Vince to give me. They were REALLY discounted. Probably because they were out of season....lol

    Amanda - how wonderful of you to be down so many sizes in your shirts! That's awesome!

    Barb - I don't know anything about a stationary recumbant bike. We have a recumbant bike, but Vince mainly uses it for therapy for his knee. I use the upright spinning bike at the Y.

    genalace - the fact that you tracked your food is great! Even the great mimi was over the other day. It's just important to track and not go over all the days, but let that be an exception, which I know you will do.

    Nancy - have you ever put cucumber slices in your water??? The first time I heard of that, I thought "yuk", but it's really quite good and refreshing.

    I think Vince is going to get me one of those 52oz Bubba kegs. I figure I'll be able to take that bowling and then bring it home to finish. The bad thing is that it's just too big to put into a cup holder. But if he's driving, that shouldn't be a problem for me. Fortunately, the bowling alley doesn't mind my bringing my own tea.

    Lindsay - so sorry to hear about your kidney. Do you have to monitor your protein intake? What about potassium? I remember FIL was on dialysis and after each meal he'd take a TUMS, seems the calcium would bind with something, I don't remember what, so that it could be excreted.

    Tomorrow night we are going to play Mexican Train dominoes with the Newcomers. I'll take some shrimp bites that I have frozen. I'll just bake them and then take them with me. Wed. should be an interesting day. The Newcomers are having their board meeting. I don't agree at all how this one lady has run the nominating committee for next year, neither does the other gal on the committee. I intend to say something because I really feel she's wrong, that she just wants what is good for her, not for the organization. I won't say that in so many words, but I intend to tell everyone the timetable. OK, now that I've totally confused you, a few weeks ago we met. At that time she said that she'd run for vp if no one else wanted it. A week or so later I was talking to one guy who said that he'd run for vp or any other position. Honestly, I think he'd make a good vp and so does the other member of the committee. To me, there's a distinct possibility that he'll be pres. the next yr. so to me it would be to his (and the organization's) advantagae to have him work closely with the pres. The lady who is vp now doesn't want to be pres. Another lady said she wants to go because she wants to have some sort of game night, but I don't think this whole thing was thought out. So it'll take time to ask things like "who'll collect the money, who'll insure that the room is reserved, etc. etc". Then another lady just told me that she'd like to go to tell them if we're disbanding one group. And I have to be at bowling at 1!

    shmogo - I hear ya about the added calories from exercise. That's why I don't add in my exercise calories. If I go over a bit one day, I figure I have that as a thing I can fall back on. I used to add in my exercise calories, and I found that I was eating junk just to get my calories up. What good did that do??? So now I don't add them in.

Our Robby (also 16+, a rescue, and totally blind) has been hanging in pretty well, but this morning he couldn't keep anything down, had a bad bout of the runs and is pretty unsteady on his pins. Here's hoping tomorrow is better for both our beloveds.

    Kathie believe another name for quinoa is grain amaranth. Its a little seed that bursts when cooked, can be substituted for rice, barley or other whole grains, but is higher in protein and lower in carbs... I think.. anyone know for sure?:huh:
    Michele, Vince bicycles outside on recumbent as knee therapy? What's with his knee? Think I may be exploring knee therapies soon too.:frown:

    My first experience with quinoa was a VERY good one. Quinoa and Black Beans, with corn and cilantro. Great without cilantro, too, if you don't care for the taste of it. This makes a lovely side dish, or lunch with a green salad. I like it hot or cold.

    Using 50% less sodium canned black beans, here's how the nutritional info reads when I plugged in the recipe to mfp:

    3/4 c. serving = 119 calories, 3 calcium, 1 fat, 5 protein, 281 sodium, 256 potassium

    Good evening, ladies! I'd like to join your group. I can be fairly active (and plan on becoming more so), but sometimes keeping up with the 20-somethings can be discouraging.

    I'm 56, from Ft Worth, TX. I lost 40 lbs a couple of years ago doing South Beach, but reached a sticking point, became discouraged, and began gaining again. This past year, particularly the last 1/2, I've had some stressful issues to deal with, and my response to stress is to eat. Not Good! So I'm 30 lbs up again. Got back to exercising this morning, and will start on my eating plan tomorrow.

    Look forward to getting to know you all and sharing encouragement and successes!

    Amaranth and quinoa are actually different grains:
    quinoa:
    Derived from the Spanish spelling of the Quechua name kinwa or occasionally "Qin-wah", Quinoa originated in the Andean region of Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru before they were colonized and became nation-states, where it was successfully domesticated 3,000 to 4,000 years ago for human consumption, though archeological evidence shows a non-domesticated association with pastoral herding some 5,200 to 7,000 years ago.[1]
    amaranth:
    Several species are raised for amaranth "grain" in Asia and the Americas. This should more correctly be termed "pseudograin" (see below). Amaranth grain contains no gluten and is safe to consume for individuals with coeliac disease.[7]

All forms have a LOT of protein for a grain.

  • I'm having a hard time with eating again...still. Did well all day today until my dad came home from the hospital. What a cantankerous old fart he can be!!! Terrible way to talk about your dad I know. He's always been a little ornery from time to time but having surgery, dealing with the confusion of being in the hospital (he thought he was in an apartment and asked a nurse what the rent was) and, worst of all, not being able to get around as well as usual has put him over the top. I recognize the self-medicating part of grabbing for the goodies. But, but, but.

    All I can say is tomorrow is another day. I did better today than yesterday and hope to do better tomorrow than today. I'll have my computer out and handy so can log as I go. That helps a lot. Also, tomorrow, more veggies!

He's almost 90 though and I give him credit for being cranky about not being able to get around as well as usual. : ) It would be a lot easier to just sit back and let people wait on you. The fact that he hates that probably has something to do with the reason he's still around.

    I feel like the new year is starting out on track! I began my second cycle of the 17 Day Diet and I am looking forward to feeling much better in about 4 days. One day at a time. I better get to work...be back later!

    Mimi/Mary…. You have done so well and going through the stressors is definitely a challenge. I think the baby steps and one meal at a time is a great strategy. Pamper yourself when you can.

    Kackie…I just started my second round of the 17 day diet. I couldn’t wait to start…just to get back into a good schedule. I did well on my first round in cycle 1 ….by the time I was in cycle 3 Christmas was here and kind of lost it. I am really looking forward to eating clean.
    Bea…Hugs to you….and your dog. It is so hard to see our pets suffer.
    Barbiecat…I read Younger Next Year and I found it a great wake up call….really got me thinking about the importance of exercise and moving everyday.

    Hello fellow Floridian! We are in Palatka (just south of jacksonville) 32 this a.m. with 20knot wind..... I think I'm a weanie and not walking this a.m. Getting back on track with some indoor exercises! The next few days are supposed to be even colder! brrrrr..... but no wind, so back outside tomorrow :bigsmile:

    Wow...we got winter here last night. I think we got down below 30 and the wind is B_L_O_W_I_N_G!!! I think that I will do an exercise DVD today inside! It takes me a couple of days to adjust to temperature change. I did not know that it was also so cold in central FL! That's unusual for you down there! (We are in SC)

    JB and Beth: thanks for the info on Quinoa. I think that Kathie wanted to know about it but I was curious too! I haven't ever cooked with it but I will have to try it at some point. The recipe with black beans sounds great!

    SallyCC: I am on day 3 of the first cycle of the 17 day diet and so far, so good. I just need to get my cravings under control and this is working for me. Also, it seems fairly healthy in that you can have yogurt, most vegetables and plenty of fruits that I like. I haven't missed the carbs yet, but this next week we have an overnight trip with a group of friends at another's house, so that should be a bit trickier. I plan to bring a little cooler with a few things to quietly put in my room and just make the best choices I can at meals. In a big group I do not think anyone will notice anyway! Good for you for going right back on...I'll be interested in your feedback.

    Mary(mimi): Thinking of you and glad that you can vent here to us! I think we can all relate to using food as an escape or medication! Keep us posted!

    I spent a good part of my day yesterday taking sections of my closet out, then trying on each item, and only putting back items that FIT and that I loved. My closet looks much better today. :love: (I still have to deal with a back section that has dresses hanging...I seldom wear dresses, so need to deal with that soon. Can't handle it today!) I need to tackle a few other cabinets and drawers in my bathroom today!!! It feels so freeing to de-clutter this time of the year. If only I had the energy to tackle our garage:noway: :noway: :noway: :noway: :noway: :noway:

    Hello All! :flowerforyou: I'm back after many months and will try to be more regular about checking in. :smile:

    I need exercise motivation. :ohwell: I'm on maintenance and my stomach problems keep me from overeating (the only blessing in this condition which is gastroparesis). I LOVE walking outside but when it gets cold and windy (makes me cranky :grumble: ) like it is today I have good intentions to do Leslie Sansone or the Wii, but often it doesn't happen. So, besides eating properly (low, low fiber) to avoid GP attacks, my focus will be getting at least 20 minutes of good movement activity each day.

    Kackie, I can relate to your relationship with your dad. :flowerforyou:

    The puppy in the picture is Dewey, our new grandpuppy. He's a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, a breed I'd never heard of before. I looked it up and when he's mature he'll look like a small Golden Retriever and they apparently have a personality like them as well. He's as cute as the ****ens!!!!!!

    Gotta go. Today is the first day DH has been back to work since the 22nd and I have A LOT to do.

    well its cold and windy here in sth florida, more windy than cold really....yesterday one of our dogs, was a little off(not eating all his food, not as playful, and cold and shacky)i though it was a one day thing, but today he is the same, called vet but he cant see him til 1pm....i am really loving the quinoa(i really love pasta and rice)but have not been having any for months...so i found this recipe yesterday and thought i would share...i am planning on making this today or tomorrow(need to get to the store for the ingredients)...sorry i didnt respond to the posts, but will later...have a lovely day all:flowerforyou:

    In regards to what Kackie said about cleaning out drawers and closets.....yep, it's a good way to start off the new year, I did the same thing yesterday. Since I couldn't cram one more single thing into my T-shirt drawer, I had no choice. Most of the shirts were summer tops and tanks, which I put away in a storage cabinet. I found a few long sleeve 2X tops in the drawer, tried one on and had to laugh because I looked like a total bag lady. It's really something that I feel comfortable in fitted tops now rather than all covered up with huge billowing blouses.

    Started another box of clothes for the Goodwill. Need to sort through my closet this week, maybe I can alter a few things and get some use out of them. I hate like heck to throw things out -- had to remind myself that I do know how to sew. Hemmed up some jeans this weekend and hubby's sweats that were too long. Sewing machine up and oiled and ready to go.

    Hubby gave me TONS of praise yesterday for how "swoooosh" I look! He's amazed at how fast I'm walking now and how much better my posture is. "Swoooosh" is a term I first heard a few months ago when the mom of one of my piano students noticed I'd lost a lot of weight. She was shocked, then waved her arms and said "Your legs! They're swoooosh!" It was so cute.

    I've worked a lot on building up strength in my legs, walking faster, climbing hills, doing a tiny bit of jogging and learning to racewalk. My arms though, sheesh, they're swooooosh but more like squaaawsh and I can hardly find the biceps. I have simply got to start building some upper body strength. Counter push ups, 40-50 a day, isometrics. I mentioned to hubby that I might buy some weights to use, he said "No need" and handed me 2 cast iron pans in the kitchen.

    Good day to all, and oh, Salad Sistas! Challenge starts today, big salad every day for lunch or dinner with 2-3 cups greens, plus chopped vegs, and something on the side like cottage cheese, beans, nuts. 320 cals total or thereabouts. Let's get those potassium levels up!

    Good morning all. Thank you all for the supportive comments about my Tawny. She's still the same - but not any worse! One day at a time. I apologize for not replying to individuals but with my short term memory it is a long drawn out process trying to do that right now. I'll get better at it.

    My big question of the day is: I started logging my actual water yesterday - and while the flavored water I drink has no calories it is quite high in sodium as I found out yesterday. My question is - if I'm not reaching my sodium ?goal? on this site even with the water should I be concerned? I know I should be drinking tap water but honestly the tap water at work is soooooo bad! I'm convinced that whatever comes out of that tap cannot be better for me than the bottled variety. Any thoughts?

    thanks for sharing. now that we have our little 4 year old granddaughter back in our lives again, I will have to start trying things like baking cute things again.

    Wow! a bunch of go-getters! That's good for me to be around.

    This week the weather in North Texas is a lot milder that normal this time of year. New Years is usually when we get our first ice storm, but it's supposed to be in the 50s and 60s in the afternoons here. Still down around freezing in the mornings, though.

    Fortunately (or unfortunately?) I can't use the weather as an excuse. I love to walk outside, but if the weather doesn't cooperate I have a treadmill in the back bedroom.
