I love almond milk! Very light and not too obvious a flavor. I make my own, actually:

-Soak 1 cup of almonds in water in the fridge overnight.

-The next day, put almond in a blender/processor with 3 cups of cold water. Blend until almonds are well crushed.

-Strain through a fine strainer (with cheesecloth works best).
You can keep the ground almonds from straining the liquid and use them for baking as well!

This keeps in the fridge for a few days. Just make sure you give it a quick shake before you use it! Enjoy :D

I would not recommend going with soy milk but that's just me. I still drink milk and I also drink unsweetened almond milk.

any reasons for not going with soy? or just is it preference?

The arguments against soy are, for the most par,t unsubstantiated myths. :flowerforyou: Be sure to try different brands if you don't like the flavour of one - some companies do a better job than others of taking that 'beaniness' out of it. I prefer it over almond milk because it has a decent protein content (6g/cup which compares quite reasonably to 1% milk's 9g/cup).

    http://www.endo-resolved.com/soy.html

For women with endometriosis (like myself), eating soy is basically flooding the body with additional estrogen, which is the very thing that feeds endometriosis.
Two isoflavones found in soy, genistein and daidzen, the same two promoted by the industry for everything from menopause relief to cancer protection, were said to ‘demonstrate toxicity in estrogen sensitive tissues and in the thyroid’.That last sentence is rather important for women with endometriosis.

This statement is based off of several studies.
Soy contains compounds that block the absorption of needed nutrients like zinc and will disable enzymes your body needs to access other nutrients. It directly blocks thyroid function and protein absorption. Many people are allergic to soy products, and women who are extremely sensitive to estrogens of any kind may react negatively to them.

I can eat pretty much any meat, eggs, all dairy products, and drink caffeine. But if I eat something that has soy in the first 3-5 ingredients, I am doubled over in pain for days.

    :flowerforyou:

HOLY COW! No pun intended! Mine got so bad(along with the fibriods) I had to have a hysterectomy! I thought it was age that was making it worse, I did not correlate my transition into being a vegetarian and eating more soy to laying on the sofa for 3 days straight in so much pain I could not even walk. Thanks so much for this information. I do not eat as much soy as I used to, basically because I discovered Quorn products and almond milk but it will be helpful when talking to others that have that dreaded disease.

No kidding! I wouldn't have ever thought that diet could effect a hormonal disease until I had seen several specialists and finally found one that was trying to do more than give me a hysterectomy before the age of 30.

Also, in terms of protein, soy isn't that great, either. This is also a fact, based on the body's ability to efficiently process various proteins. Soy is rated below meat, eggs, cheese, milk. The best protein, based on biological ability of processing efficiency, is whey protein. :) Just from a vegetarian standpoint, of course.

I use Silk Almond Milk (Unsweetened)

1 cup is 35 calories. If you use half a cup for cereal it's only 18 calories!

I have some almond, soy and coconut in the frig. I also have tummy issues with cow's milk. I haven't tried Hemp milk. I did try rice milk and it is just not smooth enough for me. Just have to watch the sugar grams in some of them.
  • Where do you get this Almond milk please, I am in the U.K. and never heard of it?

I drink Natura Soymilk. I like all the flavours they sell around here: plain, chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. I especially like using them with cereal/oatmeal and smoothies. Sure beats regular milk!

I really like almond milk. I use Vanilla or Chocolate for drinking and unsweetened for smoothies and cooking.

I do this as well, I really enjoy it and haven't had any problems since the switch

I love chocolate soy milk, it has far more nutrients then dairy milk. Also as a replacement for regular milk, I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I want to try coconut milk!

Sometimes you have to try them all and find out what you like. You may also consider your current diet and see what best supports that diet.

Oat milk is the best for baked goods, hazelnut milk for the health and taste, and rice milk for the similarity to real milk :)

I'm not sure there is a "best." We use milk for a zillion things, interchangeably. But once I started using other "milks", I think that some are better for different things.

I like coconut milk for baking and cooking. I like rice milk for cereal and for drinking (I think rice milk has the 'lightest' taste and has the closest "mouth feel" to 2% milk). I like almond milk for smoothies. I like soy milk in lattes and to use as "creamer" for coffee.

And no, I don't buy *all* these milks, nor am I suggesting that you should. This is collected observation over about a decade. I just mean to suggest that what kind of milk you ultimately prefer may depend greatly on what you end up using it for most.

I prefer Almond Milk. I drink the original. (60 calories per cup) It's the best tasting alternative to cows milk. I.M.O

It boosts the flavor of my protein shakes, cereal, and everything else!

So Delicious Coconut milk is the best milk replacement because it has more vitamins than other non-dairy milk

I really like So Delicious Coconut Milk - Original. It's tasty and is a bit smoother tasting than almond, rice, or hemp milk (to me). You can also get it in unsweetened or vanilla.

  • Vanilla Almond Milk is yum! Unsweetened isn't the best for just drinking, but in other things it's fine. I'd stay away from Soy Milk. I have thyroid problems and after lots of research I have learned that soy is very damaging to the thyroid and I used to drink Soy Milk a ton! Just a thought.
