    ATTENTION MFP-

I'm currently drinking a cup of coffee.

This is not an opinion, it's a fact.

I also just burnt my tongue while drinking this coffee.

Still, this coffee is quite tasty.

    That is all, carry on.

Do you like your coffee like you like your women? Ground up and in the freezer? :O

No - hot, and all over my lap while I'm driving

Because it's unhelpful. Who are you? And why does your situation have anything to do with mine? What works for you may or may not work for anyone else, and without any actual supporting information, no one can gauge whether or not your advice is suitable to their situation.
Then don't ask! If someone asks for advice, they may want to hear what has worked for other people. By the way, I never give fitnes/diet advice on here because I'm "no one". Give people enough credit to look through the advice they're given and see what might work for them.

Obviously it's different if someone is asking for different options or asking about what other people have had success with. But when someone is asking for information, advice, or suggestions on how to accomplish something, actual information needs to be given.

This was a much better way of trying to get your point across....IMO :ohwell:
  • Yeah, you know what, if I have I have advice to give, I'm going to give it anyways. It's up to the other person to take the advice or not. I don't take most advice without researching it first.

Well, this is a community support forum. The community = people trying to lose weight, some more successfully than others. Now and then, and actual "expert" comes along and posts as well. But for the most part, we're all here to help each other out. As with any community, you'll have misinformation, myths, and erroneous assumptions being spread around. Well, unless you muzzle everyone, and then you have a newsletter or wiki, not a community support forum.

  • Not at all. There are a lot of people on the boards who know this stuff inside out and backwards. Those are the people who should be doing the bulk of the posting around here, not the "you should eat your exercise calories because I do and it works for me" people.
If you're not going to support your advice with science, or at least logic, then don't post.
What's wrong with answering a question with "this works for me"? Who are you to tell people what they should and shouldn't post? Unless you're a new mod of whom I'm not aware.

Because it's unhelpful. Who are you? And why does your situation have anything to do with mine? What works for you may or may not work for anyone else, and without any actual supporting information, no one can gauge whether or not your advice is suitable to their situation.
    Wrong!
I see great value in people sharing with me actual results.
You can keep your boring studies, science and hot air.

    Show me RESULTS!
I have them, and I want to hear from others who have earned results as well.
No, this is just how it works here, and thank heavens the creators of this community feel likewise.

It would be a boring, lonely place if you had your way.
Again, go start a group or your own community, and let's see how that works for you.
    I predict FAILURE!

    Prove me wrong.

I am pretty sure I have read many OP posts that specifically request a person personal experience.

One size does not fit all!

If I want an answer that I know is backed up by science, I'll go ask my doctor. Not a website forum. Come on, this isn't hard. There's tons of made-up, wrong, pointless, irrelevant, misleading, and sometimes just plain dangerous "advice" on the boards. If a person hasn't figured that out, maybe they should get off the internet. And maybe other persons should accept that this is NOT a medical advice board, and who posts what cannot be filtered by an idea of who knows what for real. Best of luck, anyhow.

Have you read some of the posts on here? People ask questions that are so far from fitness-related, and then get all bent out of shape because no one answers; when all along Google was just a mouse-click away. There are a TON of naive people on these forums.

There is nothing wrong with getting science-backed factual answers when the question asks for facts; just as there is nothing wrong with getting opinions when the question asks for opinions. It's trying to filter out the difference between the two that caused this thread in the first place. The naive people aren't going to step up and admit they don't know how to do their own research. Instead, they will rely on you and me for advice.

I don't know why so many people are arguing AGAINST getting science-backed advice when questions ask for it. Hell, if that's the case, then HCG is the new wonder-drug.

We ask the MFP populace because sometimes someone DOES know the answer, and a lot may happen in private messages that you don't see on the forums. Also, we ask here because we seek support, even if our target audience doesn't know the answer.

If you don't like what you read, feel free to correct, or to ignore. None of us would mind.

Breathing works for me. Don't take my word on it though, I'm no doctor. Best to get an appointment with a pro, but just warning you, the waiting list for a specialist is long, don't hold your breath..... Wait.

Another person wanting to police the boards. Guess what? If you post something in the forums, you'll get replies from people. I replied to the OP, directly addressing his post. But because I don't agree, you think I should just go away? Doesn't work like that here.

Personally, and this may only work for me, but, I like the opinions and hearing what has worked for other people. I realize that their way may not be the right way. I certainly dont really look for concrete answers here. I am mostly here for support and to be able to talk to people that have some of the same struggles. I am also incredibly interested in the lengths that people will go to accomplish their goals. When I want ACTUAL instruction, I go to my personal trainer, my nutritionist or my doctor. Since none of you are any of them, I will continue to just enjoy the interaction.

    Yes.

If people are just starting out or starting back, they absolutely should talk to a doctor. Isn't that what every health & fitness website, exercise machine, product, etc says in their disclaimers? I agree with OP on that 100%. Talk to an expert. I'd even venture to say that a trainer isn't perfectly reliable for advice; some of them (not all or even most, of course) have little more training than a week-long class and a CPR certification. If you have science or health questions, are making major lifestyle changes or are new to fitness, talk to your doctor.

This, however, is a Community board, for asking the rest of the community. If people ask questions of the community, they're going to get layperson opinion and experience answers. It's not reasonable for posters to expect that ONLY experts are going to answer them, and it's not up to us to police it.

I'm no expert runner or master chef, but Imma go ahead and keep commenting on what hydration system and pre- and mid-run snacks work for me, based on my experience.

So, basically if anyone wants good information, they're supposed to contact you? Well, unless they need spelling and grammar help. You start a thread sure to cause drama, yet your profile says you try to stay out of drama. I love irony.

Not everyone is in this to run Triathlons. Isn't there a site for hard core athletes. Then you won't have to deal with us peons.

    Maybe these would be better.
