Why women SHOULD strength train.

So I am taking a oral communications class. We get to do presentations on topics of our choice. Today's was supposed to be a persuasive presentation. In spite of my class consisting of 4 men, myself, and the female professor, I decided to present on why women should strength train. We have to tape our presentations so we can watch them later and critique ourselves. I decided to share mine with MFP. I had to cut out a few frames that included my title slide with my whole name on it, so if it seems weirdly jumpy at the beginning that'd be why. Oh and it is 12 minutes long. On and you can't see the titles of my slides well. Sorry.

Thanks. No one noticed it at school today (or at least didn't comment)! The husband did though, and likes it.

Great presentation! Thanks for sharing. You did really well :) I hate giving speeches and I remember how scared I was when I did it in college... so cheers to you! :drinker: You looked good too, and pretty comfortable and good gestures and posture.

How did it feel giving that presentation in front of those guys? Some guys who don't lift might be surprised to hear some of that :)

PS - I really liked the guy who whispers "OMG!!" when you put up the (female) winner of the last 6 bodybuilding worlds.
  • What do you think of cardio and strength training or circuit training to help lose weight and get toned up?

    Thanks!

    Excellent presentation!

I can only possibly add 1 thing to it as I didn't hear you mention how needful weight lifting & weight bearing exercises are to women in preventing or delaying the onset of osteoporosis.
The amount of bone mass we accumulate peaks at about 30 years of age. The earlier in life you start exercising and adding weight training into your workouts, the more mass you have to draw on later in life.
Here is a link for anyone who would like to know more about how weight training can benefit women!

Thank again for posting! It was awesome!

I'm not an expert by any means but cardio is great too but it should always be done AFTER lifting when done on the same day. I don't know much about circuit training.

Pshhh....all you have to do is show the class your back. That's one sexy back!! I'm working hard toward one of those!

You should have brought a bar and a squat rack into class and say, "Without strength training, I would be able to squat more than that guy over there."

I like how you addressed the intimidation factor! That's a huge problem for me, and I am overcoming it by working out at home. I'm still shy around the hubs though. I don't want anyone to see me struggle, but I think I'll get over the fears as my fitness progresses.
