When you say you lift heavy, how heavy is heavy? I am about to invest in a dumbbell set (can't afford a gym membership) and was wondering what sort of weight ranges I need. I want to lift heavy because I think that is the way to go. Thanks

Honestly I think "heavy" should include squats and deadlifts w/ an big olympic barbell, which most of us can't afford / fit into our homes. Look into public rec centers for cheaper gym options. Here you can go for $5.25 a visit or get punch card type passes for cheaper. You could do arms at home and just go once or twice a week for the big lifts. But I do have some home stuff that I use. I have little dumbbells with weigh plates. They can go from 5lbs to 50lbs. I can use them at home for upper body and for lunges, one legged squats and sumo squats.

And just to really make the comparison clear:

    WOW. WOW.

You can also probably do a great side by side with your current pic and the pic of you weighing 10lbs+ less (149). It's amazing how you have transformed your body and defied the myth that a lower number on the scale is always better. Congrats! You are such an inspiration!

Yep totally worth repeating, over and over. Lifting heavy and enjoying our food is a fun process if we just accept it and let it happen, you look strong and tight, yet feminine, now when you cut... that's especially what I'm soooooo stoked to see when you do another update!!!

    YES!!

Threads like this make me 100% sure that I'm on the right path.

I am also 5'9". And, after 25+ years of cardio-gym rat behaviour, I have moved to heavy-lifting. I'm pretty sure my body will morph in 2012 with similar results to yours.

    HEAVY LIFTING ROCKS!!

You're a great example for women (and men) everywhere. I'm glad that the word is spreading about the effectiveness of heavy lifting for women.

Your best areas are your arms/shoulders and ab section, though you look great all over.

I lift heavier (when I can) also though that's not so uncommon for men. I switched last month to a 5 X 5 program and have made some modest gains, got off my strength plateau.
