Dieting and alcohol!?

  • How about a Miller Genuine Draft 64 beer? They taste good and I plan them into my calories for the day when I drink them. I honestly have not been going out much since I started this journey in January. I'm afraid if I have more than 2 beers I'll get drunk and lose control. I sure don't miss the hangovers though!

i cant drink beer so i keep my drinking to top shelf vodka and hendrick's gin. my mixer is usually soda.

since i'm eating for weight loss, i cant drink as much as i used to without getting drunk, so 3 drinks is sorta my maximum..

the other thing i keep in mind is that i always want to eat after a night drinking, so i make sure to have something pre-cooked for me when i get home. one of my fave post drinking dishes is a dish i bake in the oven with eggs, potatoes, diced chicken, and spinach.

Avoid beer. And avoid cheap, nasty beer that says it's "low-cal" especially-you will just end up drinking more! I'd go for shots, period. If you can't or don't want to just do a shot or two, add citrus juice and club soda. Go for the lowest proof you need to get to your drunk happy place-the lower the proof, the less calories.

Honestly, sweet or fancy cocktails are good if you just want to sip and be a part of the group, but if the point is to get tipsy/drunk, you probably won't care about missing out on the complexities of your drink as soon as you are "good".

I have this problem too. I'm a college student and we all know drinking can be a pretty big part of this lifestyle, haha.

I just try to plan ahead as much as possible. If I know there's a big party coming up I'll try to be under my calories for a couple days before. Then I can save up a few hundred "alcohol calories" for the party.

Also, you can have a full stomach and not be too high in calories. There have been days where I eat nothing but veggies, and I'm stuffed at about 600 calories. If you ate like that before a night of drinking, you'd have hundreds of calories left for drinks but wouldn't be drinking on an empty stomach.

Also, yes, this - shots. They get the job done for the lowest amount of calories! If you can't do straight up shots try mixing with diet soda... but I usually just force a few shots down and then I'm good :)

  • Michelob ultra only has 95 cals & contains 4% alcohol in a 12oz bottle and for every beer i order, i also order a glass of water, therefore i get the drunk on and stay hydrated... and it makes for much less of a hangover.

I've tried to limit my drinking to one night a weekend, (which sucks, sometimes. Especially this weekend.) and I'll only do shots or vodka with diet sprite, since a lot of the frats have that. And I always make sure to go to the gym and drink a bunch of water those days, too.

Be careful of Diet Soda. Yes, you are saving calories, but at what cost to your body?

I used to love Captain & Coke...until I learned about how bad soda is for our bodies. Then I switched to Michelob-still love it, but the calories are high.

Now, I love Tangeray & Tonic. (approx) 75 calories in Tangeray & Tonic has 80. OR choose club soda which has ZERO calories. Very refreshing too!

    1 oz Tanqueray® gin
    3 oz tonic water
    0.25 oz lime juice

Vodka Soda (Carbonated water) with an orange wedge. It's my favorite drink so far. 67 calories.

i always drink vodka sodas. I try to limit it to 2 a night just because anymore than that for me and I start to become a mess. So not attractive! But try Vodka Sodas. They don't taste that great so maybe you won't want to drink as much

I miss my Crown and Coke on the weekends!!!

    Yess!!!!!!!
  • micholob ultra light is also a good alternative if you want to drink beer. only 95 calories.
  • For beer drinkers, don't be afraid of Guinness. It's surprisingly low in calories.
  • I had the hardest time with this. I stopped drinking for awhile, and then my friends actually stopped inviting me out to the bars with them (which was totally lame, but I can't say I was being much fun at a bar not drinking). Eventually I just let it go and did what I wanted. It takes an additional 3500 plus your 2000 cals to gain one pound of fat. I highly doubt you're drinking and eating that much in a day anyway, especially if you hit the gym before hand!! :) I try to just go out one night a weekend instead of both nights and that usually works out just fine with no bad weight outcomes.

I drink shots with no-cal mixes. Rye and diet coke, vodka and crystal light (even vodka and diet coke...vodka doesn't have that much taste especially after a couple  ). If you're going out dancing with friends, then I'd worry even less because you can get some exercise in with some high energy dancing! You should try to eat something though before drinking, so you don't get completely wasted!

I'm one of those people who enjoys a drink (I'm a student), and there has been many a time when I've been worse for wear because of drinking on an empty stomach. How can I drink AND not go over my calories? I'd drink low-calorie drinks such as gin, but even one of those is around 100cals. I don't even want to THINK about a beer.

How can I get round this?

I think you know the answer already.

Dry reds. On the day of, eat your protein and low fat. 1g protein and .35g fat per lb of body weight. Go very very light carbs and then go out and enjoy some drinks. Too easy.

Bud light is 4.5% alcohol the beer I drink is 9% alcohol and is 200Cals. So, technically my beer is lower calories. lol

Agreed! my favorite "new' one is vodka and ocean spray diet blueberry. The higher the alcohol percentage the more bang for calorie buck. As long as your primary goal is weight loss a few low-calorie drinks will only serve as calories and not hurt you.
  • Instead of a glass of wine I have a wine spritzer, half wine half seltzer water, with a twist of lime

FYI a typical beer (like miller GD or high life) only has about 140 calories..not that I drink those anymore - they put high fructose corn syrup in it... YUCK
