Does anyone get a little offended when people complain about others at the gym they mention the Grunters and Weight droppers.

I'm sure they are talking about those jerks who do it too much, but do they know that we can't move super heavy weight without a little bit of "umph?"

Do they know that there is no quiet way to put down a 300+ pound dead-lift? We don't drop it from the top but its not a pillow either.

Do they know that sometimes we don't perform our Olympic lifts perfectly so we HAVE to drop the weight so we don't hurt ourselves?

    Yes!

I grunt on that last squat rep almost every workout. Not just physical workout - sometimes it is mental to get that last rep up!
I drop at least a little when I deadlift too. And cleans.

It happens. Im not so dainty when it comes to lifting. I push myself so yea i get a tiny tiny bit offended xD

I wouldn't say I get offended, but I let out a little *sigh* of annoyance that yet another person feels that way.

The way I see it, if it's a weightlifters/powerlifters type gym, and people don't like noise, they should go somewhere more mainstream.
If it's a regular, standard gym, they should be able to make noise that's necessary and not get moaned at, but if they want more than that, they should really find a more suitable gym..

For example, at my gym (one mainly for powerlifters and bodybuilders) you get lots of shouting / loud grunting as they lift. Sometimes if it's a 1RM or heavier weight you get a few guys standing around that person screaming at them "push it!!" or "f-ing ***** weight" etc to get them all fired up and more likely to lift it. I wouldn't expect a regular gym to tolerate that, which is why it's a specialised gym, but when you're really working hard for any lift, you most of the time, need to grunt at least somewhat. People should understand that, no matter where you are.

As far as the weight dropping, I'm OK with that, as long as they make some effort to control it as best they can. It is unfortunate that because some people there like to completely drop it after their last rep, that some of the dumbells are broken :/

Yes. This body wasn't built without pain and seriously, sometimes it's a very primal sound that happens when I'm forcing those last reps and I'm making "those offending sounds" and yes, sometimes my forearms/hands/wrists are so fatigued from finishing that set that I do have to abruptly lower them and let them clunk a bit. YES! Sometimes we have to let the bar fall 4-5 inches to prevent rounding our backs on the last rep. People who get offended by it, either haven't lifted hard enough in their life to relate or are straight up prudes, it's not like we're doing it to bother you, or to try to turn you on, or make you uncomfortable, get over yourselves, it's the effing gym and we're there to get results like everyone else in our own way.

I am not dainty about lifting, when I'm in the gym, I'm in my own space, don't mess with my zen mang... lol.

I grunt doing squats and crunches. My daughter says it grosses her out, so I do it louder. Bwaaahahaha...I love being evil mom. I also often do a bootie wiggle to add to the grossness of mom dancing to Footloose in the living room.

There's grunting and then there's wails of barbaric yalps that I can hear across the building with my headphones on (not making that up).

Grunting fine. I don't need to hear a warcry.

That's one reason I'm glad I workout where I do. Everyone is grunting and dropping weights. We are all yelling for the other to get the last rep. We are making weird faces and high five-ing each other and it's all normal.

I don't mind people dropping weights, I understand they are heavy but I don't appreciate the men that drop it with a huge grunt and then look around proudly to see who is staring...seriously?!

I grunt, I slam weights, I sweat all over the place, I don't give a damn! If someone has the stones to tell me something while I'm in the zone then they best be ready for warfare!

Anybody who gets offended at a little lifting noise should visit my family room on lift night. My husband scares small children and dainty ladies regularly! LOL! If you are "heavy lifting" and not making any noise, you aren't heavy lifting!! Just sayin'!

sounds like a great gym, i had one like that but moved away, if a person has ever worked out in one they would know, it is extremely motivational

I don't get the whole issue with it, I really could care less. I'm totally in tune to my own workout. I really have no idea why people get so wholly offended by it. Planet Fitness even has the lunk alarm for it. I don't hear or notice it 95% of the time, I feel like people are just looking for a reason to get offended, lol.

I absolutely hated the dropping, so I quit and I work out at home now. It is so distracting, and I could even hear it in the locker rooms. The floor would shake a bit. It was hard for me to work out and remain calm with all that going on.

Now that I am doing some strength training at home, I know that it isn't easy and that's the whole point. I still don't understand the need to DROP stuff. My workouts are actually a lot more productive when I put things down slowly.

The grunting I totally get though. I have been muttering swear words lately during my workouts. I guess it's better that I stay home to do them.

I go to a planet fitness often, so there, obviously.............thats a no-no, but that works for me because i have a 24 hour gym at work that i can do whatever i want in, am alone 99% of the time, and afterward, i dont even have to clean up the weights or chalk..............they have people to do it there...............

But i do enjoy the two different lifting styles............but sometimes, you got to let it out............

People do need to get over our primal human nature. It is an extremely large reason that our C-section rate is so high and there's so much fear around child birth. Anyone who has had a child naturally and lifted heavy can attest that there's a point when it feels the same, just in child birth that fe3elng of almost separating from oneself lasts longer... lol. I hadn't expected that response and who knows maybe I'm the only one who made that physiological/emotional response.

Exactly, and this is usually in unison with some very heavy weights CRASHING to the floor. I don't mind grunting.

I'm there super early with the guys, I always announce "watch out fellas, it's about to sound like a tennis match up in here!" when I'm about to lift so heavy I can't hold the grunt in.
