Can someone recommend a good pedometer? I don't have much money to spend on something elaborate, but it seems like the ones I've had before were kind of junky and didn't count accurately. Thanks! =)

I use my iPod Nano. I didn't buy it as a pedometer, though I did buy it thinking I could use it for music and to track my runs. Having the accelerometer built in was a plus that I've come to appreciate.

The problem with looking for a cheap one is you'll be looking at models that use a mechanical counter-a toggle or a spring, and those can have problems counting if they aren't worn properly. They can grow more inaccurate as they wear out (spring types). Plus, they only count steps, not the intensity of those steps.

An accelerometer can be more accurate calorie-wise as they measure forward speed and intensity. They have formulas to calculate that your 1000 steps at 2mph vs 1000 steps at 4mph yields a higher calorie burn.

If you are just starting, a cheaper model will at least give you motivation, and when you've saved a little you can invest in something better. I'm saving up for a FitBit now, as it has both an accelerometer and altimeter, so it measures forward and vertical momentum (steps and floors), plus it graphs your intensity- 20% slow, 30% moderate, etc. My nano does that for calories-2 10k days don't yield the same calorie count depending on my pace, but I can't see that I was having a very active day vs a day where I just walked a lot.

As for which cheaper model...I'm afraid I'm useless there. The reviews I've seen indicate Omron is a good brand, but I don't know what their models run price-wise.

I have a Sportline one I bought at Walmart for $5 and it works well. I used this when my New Balance one stopped working and it works fine even though it s mechanical.

My New Balance one is slim and I can wear it with most of my outfits. For some reason after 3 months it stopped working :( New Balance did replace it with a new one so the Sport line is my back up.

I have this sportline too. No problem in about 2 years. Works fine when I wear it. This challenge keeps me wearing it. Good luck.

4 miles is proabaly about 9,100 steps so any regular walking would likley put you over.

I think you had said you had just bought the pedometer so I suspect you can return it. Which one was it that did not read correctly?
