Conversely, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is responsible for carrying cholesterol particles back to the liver to be eliminated, is decreased by fructose.28 Fructose ingestion therefore contributes to fat deposits in the liver (fatty liver)7 and increases the amount of dangerous lipoproteins that enhance cholesterol deposits in blood vessels walls.29 This can lead to plaque buildup and narrowing of the blood vessels—a ticking time bomb for the development of both stroke and heart attack.

I stand corrected. That was about the metabolic dangers of HFCS and the fact that it is readily converted to fat by the liver.

Yay for scare mongering. And "preservatives" aren't an ingredient. Preservatives ARE ingredients, but not the way you're wording things.
And trust me, you would rather have preservatives in your food than NOT have them. They aren't just there to scare you. They keep your food from rotting. Oh but I guess we all live near farms...
Oh noes chemicals!! How awful! But do you wanna hear something REALLY scary? Our entire bodies are made up of chemicals!! Quick! Abandon your flesh!!

I don't get why everything has to be so complicated.
90% of the time, eat healthy, try not to eat things with an ingredient list (i.e. EAT meat from the butcher or meat dept at your grocer, veggies, fruit, ect)
10% of the time, eat whatever else it is you want or need.
EVERYTHING in moderation.0 -

Um. Cellular metabolism requires c6h12o6 to happen. No sugar at all = you're dead.
That being said, i'd prefer to eat things in their more natural state. I avoid any sort of hydrogenated/brominated oil (except my occasional sinful Mt. Dew). I prefer to buy foods without preservatives (my preservative is called the freezer). I'd rather eat xylitol or stevia than aspartame- call me crazy but I know people who live off of diet soda and are fat. Zero calories doesn't equal good for you.
I also don't think i'll die if I occasionally eat processed food (Mt. Dew comes to mind). I'd rather eat sugar than aspartame and run off the calories. Just makes sense to me. But my protein shake has sucralose and I need that protein shake...so you know, you pick your battles.0 -

High-fructose corn syrup
Trans fats
MSG (Monosodium glutamate)
Artificial sweeteners (this includes aspartame, Splenda, Ace-K)
Artificial colours (any type of artificial dyes such as Yellow #5, Red #1, etc.)
Artificial flavours
Preservatives
I don't think anyone could avoid these foods for a week, not even a few days. Not entirely. And why would you? It's pointless. You can lose weight and improve your health without reverting to a diet that consists solely of garden fresh foods.
I think a lot of new people read this information, think they HAVE to eat like this (because of the scare mongering in the article and the thread) and give up after they find it isn't possible to live this way. Not for most people.
You don't need to go from fast food junkie to vegan your first month here. Just watch your calories. That's the most important thing.0 -

Not that I know ANYTHING about fructose... but I see that quote ALL the time, and when we're talking about which foods to avoid because of obesity...... this quote really doesn't apply.
People make themselves obese by eating high amounts of foods which cause obesity.0 -

I don't think avoiding processed foods is something that should be laughed at and demonized.
I recognize that most of us are here for weight control - which happens regardless of the quality of the food you eat... but there's nothing wrong with saying things like:
"Man, I really should avoid MSG because it's massively addicting and makes real food taste like doody in comparison"
"Why does this pasta sauce have HFCS in it? Does -pasta- sauce really require added sugar?"
"Considering they've only been studying this random synthetic substance for 20 years, perhaps I should avoid it until some more comprehensive studies come out!"
As far as the, "I'm -this- healthy or someone I know is -this- healthy and all I/they eat is crap" defense. Good for you! GOOD FOR YOU. I am glad it's worked out for you and the person you know! Meanwhile, some others may not have such trust in our superior genetics so we'd like to make it as easy as possible to maintain our longevity.0 -

plus peanut butter, mayo, mustard, bread, frozen berries, and milk do not have the things listed on that list (depending on the bread, of course): preservatives, MSG, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, whatever else. I don't have it memorized. Even the protein powder, depending on the brand, might be free of all that stuff.0 -

Also, occasionally I eat nonfoods like morningstar, which has tons of nonsense in it. However, I try to avoid eating foods like that. Did I say I was perfect? No. I did say that I avoid them. Most of the time I do, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I eat a big fat rice crispy treat or a reeses peanut butter cup.
The point of my entire post was, "Why are you going to be a jerk to someone who wants to eat diferently than you?".0 -

I think this is funny. Not only have I done it for a few days, or a few weeks, I have it done it for years on end. Its called eating clean. No i'm not doing it currently. I have already said that I currently choose a moderate approach to nutrition. But to say that no one could entirely do it just smacks of...i dunno...the same lack of faith that makes people say they could never do a 1200 calorie diet or work out every day.

I don't have superior genetics. If I did I wouldn't have spent all my life as a fat guy. I'm not some lottery winner who just happened to be incredibly lucky in regards to weight loss.
I practiced moderation and exercised. Guess what? It works! You don't have to cut out entire food groups and eat only fresh lettuce to lose weight. That's my point.
But everyone who doesn't believe me, who thinks it's not possible to lose weight sustainably with a diet that consists of regular foods you'd find in your grocery store, good luck with your new organic garden. Hope it sprouts quick!0 -

So you're upset with the thread, since it's titled "7 SCARY food ingredients"? I'm not the one who started a thread telling people they had to avoid all processed foods. I responded to that saying people didn't.0
