When its in regards to building muscle I always imagine the person saying "tone" through a prim and pursed cats-bum mouth because "Toning is what ladies do".
I always tone using pink weights. Once I accidently brushed up against a manly weight and the next day I woke up looking like this -
Edited to add -true story! : )
I swear to God this happens to me. Maybe I'm that weird exception with women. I had HUGE muscles at the age of 12. I don't even lift heavy now and I still have huge muscles. YES, lifting heavy is necessary for "skinny fat" but not for us naturally strong girls like me.
I used to lift heavy in college and I would get even bigger. I'm sick of this "size fits all" mentality to weight loss. Ex-Athletes, like myself, have an ENORMOUS amount of muscle underneath our fat and TBH, I don't even care if I lose some of it. I'm sick of being called a boy.0 -
Damn you people for killing all these kittens0

Miss Sunshine, that is a beautiful cat!
Thanks! He is a stray that wondered up to my door and wouldn't leave, so now I am claiming him
No one say the "t" word so he can live!!! xD0 -
I would like to know what we're supposed to say instead.0

He looks pretty laid back for a stray!0 -
Well, many people say that you can't build muscle on a calorie deficit. Yet, my muscles are getting very firm and defined as I've lost almost 40 pounds. What do I call it if not "toned"? Something has happened to them besides simply having the fat removed around them.0

If you've been strength training you've probably gained strength and have lost fat. It really is almost impossible to gain muscle mass while on a calorie deficit. Just because you can see your muscles better doesn't mean you've gained new muscle tissue.0 -
I just turn fat into muscle. That's toning right?0

My #1 goal is to acheive a toned body... so boo on all ya'll. idowhatiwant.
Please put down the Women's Health magazine.0 -

That's ****ing MAGIC!0 -
Haha I feel the same but before coming on here and reading NROLFW I was guilty of saying it a lot!:blushing:0

Lose fat, gain muscle, become well-conditioned. Toning implies somehow doing different exercises will "elongate" your muscles to be "sleek and sexy"(I've seriously heard that in some exercise videos).0 -
I dislike kittens. I'm good with aiming to get toned0

Beginner muscle gains are possible when first starting to strength train. You just can't have sustained gains without a surplus. And honestly, just a loss of body fat could account for what you're describing. Overweight people have plenty of muscles. They're just buried under fat. As you lose that fat, your muscles become visible.0 -

Many beginners gain a little bit of muscle mass, even while in a deficit when first starting out. So this could very well have happened to you (and congratulations!) In addition, when you work out, blood flows into the muscles, making them swollen (aka getting a "pump"). And after you work out, muscles draw in water to which helps them heal and repair.
building muscle is building muscle
burning fat is burning fat
"toning" is a vague, ambiguous, overused, misused term, which is effectively meaningless0 -

Pilates gives your muscles the appearance you have described. That's why ballet dancers do it. And yes, I have experienced it first-hand and have seen it in many dancers.0 -

I get what you're saying. Everyone hates the word "toning" but no one offers an alternate word for us obvious idiots to use. It's frustrating.0 -
Hmmm. I had 6 kittens in my garage that seem to have dissapeared. No lie..My guess is the mama moved them but what a ****ty time to read this post0

Aww. :frown: I know a lot of the time I just don't find things like this funny, even when they're supposed to be total jokes.0
