I HATE when people say I'm "toned" ... I really do.

People should be using the word "fantastic" when describing you ... however, I can see why someone (who doesn't know any better) would use the word "toned" .... would you prefer "ripped" ?? "shreaded" ??

Well, many people say that you can't build muscle on a calorie deficit. Yet, my muscles are getting very firm and defined as I've lost almost 40 pounds. What do I call it if not "toned"? Something has happened to them besides simply having the fat removed around them.

If you've been strength training you've probably gained strength and have lost fat. It really is almost impossible to gain muscle mass while on a calorie deficit. Just because you can see your muscles better doesn't mean you've gained new muscle tissue.
Yes. I said that in the first sentence. However, how do you describe what happens to trained muscles through exercise if not "toning"? That's still the questoin.

I get what you're saying. Everyone hates the word "toning" but no one offers an alternate word for us obvious idiots to use. It's frustrating.

    I agree.

"toning" is a vague, ambiguous, overused, misused term, which is effectively meaningless" .....
yet if you asked most people (not on MFP) they would actually know what you mean when you say "toned"

(sorry kitty, but I still waiting on a better word to use)
