Youston = Houston
.
It drive me NUTS when people pronounce it Youston...
I'm known to occasionally toss a V in place of a W. I have also heard my Mamaw (mountain term for grandmother) pronounce sink as 'zinc' as well as calling a vacuum cleaner a sweeper.what about "warsher"? makes me cringe
This one drives me bonkers!
I hear that one ALL THE TIME here in the mountains (I live in the area where 'Deliverance' is about & filmed) as well as here Warshington.

Also for some MD folks

But luckily I escaped that... my mother and grandmother would constantly remind us.

Thanks to 13 years of experience doing theatre, I don't have an accent of any kind, really.
I say everything "properly" although very quickly.0 -

This kills me! My ex-boyfriend was from the MD area, and he would say "warsh." What pissed me off the most was that his name is Josh... So I would tell him. Say "Josh" - Now say "wash".. And he would go back and forth "Josh, warsh, Josh, warsh."
But I'm also from the Boston area.. So I said his name more like "Jash" - I clearly also say "Bahstin"0 -
Caramel - Car-mul
Vanilla - Va-nail-a
Crayon - Cran

LOL. When I was a kid I moved from Texas (T E xis) to MIchigan (Mish again), walked into class saying...Haay yaa'll. They loked at me like I had two heads. Moved back to Texas as a teen and was told I "tawlk tooo faist". I picked up Youston when I moved there. It's annoying but just cant break it.0

Orange = arnge
Creek = crick
Those I've kept since I moved from PA...one I lost though is I used to pronounce water as "wooder"
Lol. I'm from PA and I say 'arnge'. I don't say 'wooder' but my father in law does. He also says "Grarge" for garage and "Warsh" for "wash".0 -
How about "dyeat yet"?? Or referring to eggs over easy as "dippy eggs"? LOL!0

Are-can-saw- Arkansas ( Supposedly you can get a ticket for pronouncing it wrong ie Are-can-sus
I had another good one but forgot it.
* Remembered- Ma-he...NOT MAUI! omg....
I don't say any of these btw.... LoL0 -
I will get lazy with my speech (leave the "g" off of words ending in "ing," or softening "t"s to "d"s) but I don't think there is any word that I consistently mispronounce.
One of the best compliments I think I've received was "You don't sound like you're from West Virginia."0 -
Most things that ends in an"o" becomes an "a". Tomata, potata,0

I say "dippy eggs" too. But I pronounce eggs as "eh-ggs"
Or, here we've got a huge coffee chain called Tim Horton's and my family makes fun of me for pronouncing "Horton's" as "*kitten*-duns."0 -

My dad lives there now and his speech has gone to the sh*tter.0 -
Sherbet.... Pepole like to add an extra R. It is not SherbeRt!
This irritates me. I actually got a bucket of sherbet to show a friend how it's spelled and she STILL insists it's "sherbeRt" just to bug me.
Also, people in the south make fun of my pronunciation of "lilac". They say "lie-lack". Up north (you know, where there are loads of actual lilacs), we say "lie-lock".
Worse: "supposively" / "supposably" / etc instead of the actual word, which is "supposedly" ... when did reading get hard for grown adults? :huh:0 -
I say farhead instead of forehead
from DE so like eastern PA folks I also say arnge instead of orange. But I say wader not wooder or water0 -
Another one that peeves me is when people pronounce the t in often lol0

Ive been told I say the word bathroom weird.0

After being made fun of for years, I had to train myself to pronounce antenna correctly. Used to say AN-TAN-AH for some reason...
DH recently made fun of me for pronouncing golf oddly. Apprently my tongue can't tell the difference between gulf and golf - they both sound the same. Not sure I'll ever get that one right.
I've been known to say "horror" like "*kitten*" as well. My bro loves picking on me for that.
Good to know others pronounce bagel like BAG-el. My mother does that - no idea where she picked it up.0
