Why the hell am I seeing ads for it on the site? Do they not get with their ad people and tell them to filter out certain ads?

I'm sure if you want to pay for advertising space you can hawk your wares as well.

Actually, the other day I made mention of fairy dust and unicorn oil to spot reduce belly fat and got a warning from the MFP police about being sarcastic. So I doubt they would let me sell it on the site.

Adds on here are based on search engines you use. If I searched for "russian women" on my google, my ads would be for mail order Russian brides...

I was looking online at swimsuits yesterday and have an old Navy swim ad on my screen...

Doubt that it is based on MY search results as I have not searched HCG. (Or other things I see adds for).

I just find it ironic. I know they have to pay for this somehow. I would just think whomever they contract with could filter adds better. But what they hell do I know? Not much if you ask my wife.

It's not solely based on what you have searched. That said, the ones that are not based on your searches are probably paying the most money for advertising.

I did an google search for Trader Joe's Cookie Butter the other day and now an ad for it pops up on my screen.

Not thinking MFP is purposely advertising things that are against the TOS.

actually, the ads are in part driven by your searches.
Mine are all about cell phones right now because I've been looking at different plans online.

Usually web sites can at the very least select the types of ads they will or will not allow, so it still seems unusual to me that MFP wouldn't be a bit more restrictive about it.

I don't think it's just searches but internet activity. Just being here on fitnesspal means you get adds for things like gyms and diet plans.

Jpod , I'm sure MFP does not select the advertisements you are seeing. Most of that is driven from your profile on Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. You may have researched HGC at one time or visited a site that promoted it (not sure what HGC is). I may be off base about this but it seems to follow my research on the web. JMHO

Mine is for Chryslers and I most certainly have not been searching for vehicles.

Once I got a Pizza Hut ad, which is just plain wrong.

D***! If they start banning sarcastic folks, this site's gonna get PRETTY empty. Wait, I --

Agreed. You must be doing a little searching on HCG :)

I'm getting married in November- so most of my searching deals with save the dates, bridesmaid dresses and such...and that's what usually shows up on the side in my advertisements.

It's not MFP, its google ads. They are based on your internet history. If you search for sleeping bags, you'll get ads for camping gear. Doesn't mean you have to specifically search for HCG for them to show ads for it. Any searches for health or weight loss related topics would probably result in some sort of HCG ad.
  • I get ads for Burger King

Just to reiterate what others have said - it is mostly based on YOUR searches. You may not have searched HCG, but you may have searched diet or weight loss something or other. Sometimes Herbal Magic shows up on my screen, but I have never searched for them. I do, however, sometimes search low calorie recipes and frequent healthy living websites. Another example: I was looking at shoes and dresses online and now there are ads for the Shoe Company and some customized evening dress company. I did not search either of these sites, but I searched similar products.

You can opt out, if you like. I did.

Of course, that has no bearing on non Google ads.

ads are taylored to the articles and searches you do, if you see HCG talked about all over the place on here - it will start showing up in your ads. Ive been looking at shoes and spartan races lately so all my ads are based on that.

The adverts are based on what you search for. It doesn't necessarily mean you search for HCG, but if you search weight loss plans, supplements anything similar to that and it may just give you an advert for it. At the moment I have an advert above for "Zagg Ora - Loose (sp) weight by doing nothing even in your sleep, get your hotpants now!"

Also, a few days ago, I spent the whole evening searching and applying for jobs online. Now, around 75% of the ads on myfitnesspal are from online job recruiters such as reed, monster etc..

Get adblock plus to stop the ads and ghostery to stop from being tracked. Ta Da!
