About 5 years ago, I hired a trainer to help me lose weight and improve my run time in preparation for the police academy. (I ended up not joining-separate story:-) Anyway, at our first session, this fool told me to eat a can of tuna, 2 apples and 12 glasses of water every day. That is on top of the 5 miles I was running every day, as well as the strength and agility training. He assured me I would drop 30 lbs. in 3 weeks. I didn't go back for a second session.

When I was thirty eight weeks pregnant with a healthy pregnancy, I found out that my OB had written "CS" (short for c-section) on my chart in huge letters. She knew that I was planning a vaginal birth. When the nurse was taking my blood pressure, she looked in the chart and said "oh you're having a c-section?" When I said no and asked her why she asked, she closed the chart right away and changed the subject.

I had several doctors tell me there was nothing wrong with my heart. Turns out I have severe mitral valve regurgitation (regurgitation fraction is 42%) that requires regular monitoring and medication and may end up requiring open heart surgery. All they had to do was an echocardiogram to see it, and none of them until my current cardiologist, bothered.

I also had a doctor tell me that my inability to breath from a viral bronchitis infection with a secondary bacterial infection was "all in my head."

You have to use common sense with people even if they are professionals. You know when something is wrong. Stick to your guns.

My primary doc. told me to just go low-carb, her example being "have a wrap instead of a regular sandwich." Come to find out the wraps I was eating were 350 calories each, while 2 slices of my regular bread were 80 calories each... awesome.

She also told me to use 5lb weights for 5 minutes a day. Pretty sure that won't get the job done.

*sigh* not trying to bash Doctors, I think mine was just not prepared for someone who actually WANTS to dedicate themselves to weight-loss, so she gave a generic, quick-fix answer... probably thinking, the fatty will probably stay a fatty anyway no matter what I tell her.

I made the same mistake with wraps. I went on a low-carb kick several years ago and began downing blimpie and subway wraps only to later find out that they have about twice as many calories as the breads do [bangs head on desk]. FAIL

I had a "head" trainer so to speak (before she set me up with my current one) who told me that I needed to get my BMI, which was 21, down to 18. She put me on some crazy diet (her term for "nutritional plan") and I couldnt really eat anything except whey, meat, dark green veggies, and my nightly "snack" was a cup of tea. No carrots, bc of too much sugar but one day (in the far off future) I could eat them, otherwise tomatoes were also out, along with balsamic vinegar. I wasnt eating enough calories on this diet and she expected me to work out on top of that. After the first day I called her and told her I couldnt do this and she was like "I have plenty of people who have done this diet and they weighed alot more then you did and they had no problem. Its only for two weeks stop complaining". Needless to say, I quit that diet and when I told my current trainer about it she was like, "the diet she gave you is for people who need to lose like, 50lbs, you don't need to lose anything...why would she give you that diet?" The head trainer also told me that bc my husband was doing WW and that's not a lifestyle diet, I will always look better then him (she lost all this weight and her husband had left her recently). Uhm.......

At 15, I went to go see a gynecologist for a regular check up and to investigate a lump on my right breast. He then sent me to a specialist who examined me and told me and my mom, and I quote, "Oh that's nothing. I'm sure it'll go away on it's own. I'll bet everything I have in my bank account right now that it'll clear up on it's own. Don't worry about it."

Two second opinions later and 2 months past, I'm diagnosed with breast cancer and was scheduled for a lumpectomy.

I wish I would've held her up to that bet. I would've had a nice chunk of change in my savings right now.

I'm trying to lose weight and gain lean muscle mass at the same time. (I'm 175lbs and I want to get down to 140lbs) the HEAD trainer at the gym told me to limit my cardio to 2 hours per week and do weights 3-4 times a week. Than told me my diet should consist of 60% carbs, 20% fat and 20% protein. If my main focus is weights, why am I eating so little protein??

I have since switched the routine to 3-4 hours of cardio a week and 2x weights with a 40/30/30 balance.

He is not returning my emails now.

    I was told I had stage 5 cancer when I didn't.

    Holy crap!! That's bad!

I've had a lot of crappy advise from trainers that led to injury. One of the most memorable was when I told a new trainer that I'd hurt my knee in our previous session and he said we should do squats to strengthen them. When I couldn't do one squat without my eyes tearing up, he suggested I do lunges. When I refused, he suggested I do "step-ups" - basically stepping up onto a bench. That was my last session with him.

I would've sued. Not even kidding. Cancer isn't something to *kitten* around with and say no big deal about. What an idiot, I'm sorry you had to deal with that especially at such a young age.

I had a trainer tell me that if I keep exercising as hard as I do, I won't lose any weight because I'll be "spinning my wheels" so to speak. Yes, because not working hard is how I lost 20 lbs. Right.

OH and another, my son was horsing around as I was laying on my bed and he flung his head back and broke my nose. It was fractured, I could feel it, but when we went to the ER all the nurses and doctors sat there giving my boyfriend dirty looks (he took me to the ER) and they wouldn't even take me back for x-rays for almost 2 hours (meanwhile, I was still bleeding from the nose THE ENTIRE TIME). Then the ER doctor barely glanced at the x-ray and said "it's fine, take 4 ibuprofen and it won't hurt anymore."

Fortunately I worked in a doctor's office at the time, and they were able to check me out and prescribe pain killers...thank God it was just a fracture and I didn't need surgery, although from a cosmetic standpoint I'd sure like to have it.

Is there even such a thing as stage 5???????? I thought stage 4 was terminal.

There are different types of staging protocols - the most commonly known is stage IV which means it has spread to someplace far away (like breast cancer moving to the brain, vs stage III where breast cancer moves into a rib bone). Not all stage IV cancer is terminal - though it's not a great prognosis!!

As far as non-food/weight/fitness related advice, I have to say the worst advice I ever got was to take out student loans to finance my education. To anyone considering this as an option -- Your education does NOT ensure financial means to repay the loans!

My doctor's perspective on my being overweight:

"If you're hungry, eat a cucumber."

Meaning literally that is all I should eat.

I slipped and fell on a patch of ice and landed wrong on my arm ( I heard a crunching sound). I went into the ER and had x-rays done, the Dr. told me I was fine and that I could go back to my normal routine. My normal routine at that time was milking and feeding cows, when I had to feed the cows I had to carry 4- 5 gallon pails of feed at a time 2 in each hand. I did this for week or so, all the while dealing with the pain in my arm. A week later the Dr. called my house and told me NOT to move my arm as there was a bad break in my elbow and that if I moved it wrong I could lose the use of my arm. I ended up having to see a specialist which resulted in a cast from my shoulder to my hand. Moral of the story, if the Dr tells you one thing and your body tells you another it is OK to get a 2nd opinion!
