Just curious how many others are currently doing a Ph.D. or have their doctorate on here...

I'm entering my fifth year on a Ph.D. program (finally done with qualifying exams and coursework and onto a dissertation). Skipped over the master's and went straight from my bachelor's to the Ph.D. program, so it's a 7 year program for me.

M.D.'s and J.D.'s also welcome to share!

Not me! When I finished up my Master's, I decided that my marriage and family life couldn't handle going back for a Ph.D.!
So more power to all of you who can successfully complete a doctorate!

I guess nobody wants to admit they spent a decade of their adult life in college...

Try almost a decade and a half for me :(

    Bachelors + Masters+ Ph.D = 14 years for me. I must be insane. *sigh*

But yes, Ph.D. here. You can call me Dr. LabRat if ya wanna. ;)

It'll end up being 12 for me when I'm done. 5 years for bachelor's (double major added a year) + 7 years for Ph.D.

BA - 3 years; Honours degree (separate qualification in SA) - 1 year. MSoc Sci - 1 year. Practical training and internship - 18 months; Part time phd - 8 years. And most recently PG Dip in Research Degrees Supervision (for my sins!) - 1 year.

    So that's 15 and a half years.

And I'm toying with doing a second masters.

I thought my 12 year Ph.D. was rough... I don't know if I can handle a 15 year program (bachelor's to doctorate)... I'm so ready to become a colleague and no longer be a student.

I got my PhD in 2000 while working full time. DH got his in 1999. We had kids late - 3 - all after graduation. Loved the process (getting the degree). Still good memories from that time. It was so worth it, for people who are wondering ....

One of my best friends from college just finished her Ph.D. in geophysics. Tough program. :)

PhD in Microbiology and Immunology, plus 2 bachelors degrees (poli sci and biology), for a grand total of 15.5 years of advanced schooling... it was a happy day when I got out into the real world and could afford to have a life :-)

Well I love to be a student, I could be one my entire life. The university environment is incomparable.

I just got my BSc in math and physics, taking a year off, and then working towards my MD and PhD in Virology. I've got a looooong road ahead of me!

I was actually surprised to learn that I have atleast 3 PhD holders in my friends list.

I was recently offered an all expense paid PhD in Canadia. Of course the catch is that I will have to live in Canadia. That and I will have to get off my butt and finish my last class for my Masters that I've been putting off for a while (Who wants to go look for a "real job" anyways right?)

I felt that way in my first 2 years of grad school. Now, after a decade of grueling classes and exams, I'm pretty much over it. Ready to enter a faculty or lab position and do some real research. No more classwork. No more exams. No teaching.

I got my BS in math and biology! Doing my Ph.D. in fisheries science, but it's highly interdisciplinary with a lot of high level analysis, dynamical systems, numerical analysis, ODE's, and PDE's. I love math.

If you got a fellowship or TA-ship that is a full ride, do it. Those are drying up fast these days with budget cuts!

It is a matter of economics. 10 years of scholarships and then a job as a professor. Far cheaper than a mental institution and it keeps them from doing any real harm.

I can never get used to the American tradition of handing someone a professorial title the minute they get a phd and an academic post. It's hard earned here. :-)

Did someone have a tough time in their undergraduate career, though... ? Such bitterness in one so... well... pale. Let me guess. A graduate from the univeristy of hard knocks? All that fancy book learnin' doesn't equate to real life experience... ? :-))
