    I'm lazy, I just take a chicken breast, smother it in sauerkraut, add a slice of swiss cheese and 2 T of thousand island, nuke it to melt the cheese and eat it like that without bread.

    I like to eat sauerkraut all by itself. Tastes good and hardly any calories!!

    I can eat it straight with melted cheese over it or on a sandwich, You can also add it to coleslaws with a non mayo dressing.

    I love kraut...I eat it as a size dish, but this is a great recipe:

    Lazy Pierogi

    One package/large can of kraut.
    Rinse kraut 2-3 times (depending on how sour you like your kraut)
    Dice one large onion and fry with 1/2 to 3/4 stick of butter (not margarine)
    Add kraut and cook for about 15 minutes.
    Cook one pound of your favorite pasta.
    Mix pasta with sauerkraut.
    Add pepper and salt to taste.
    Add a link of smoked sausage if you so desire.
    Cook on stove top for about 20-30 minutes (covered & low heat, stirring occasionally)
    OR bake in casserole dish for about 20 minutes. :-)

    Also born and raised in Germany, so I pretty much grew up eating sauerkraut.

    I cook it just like my mom and my husband goes crazy for it!

    In a crockpot put sauerkraut, chopped carrots and onions, fried chopped bacon and the bacon grease. Season with salt, pepper, sugar, cloves and bay leaves. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high 3-4 hours. Remove cloves and bay leaves before serving.

    We usually eat it with bratwurst, meatballs or pork chops and a boiled or mashed potatoes.

    Oh so yummy!

    Reminds me, I still have some sauerkraut in the freezer... :love:

    if your jar of kraut is the unpasturized, refrigerated kind...than please don't cook it! or you will lose all the healthy probiotics it was made for!

    Soy Weinies and use veganaise instead of mayo. Can find this in the refrigerator section of the health food store. Tastes just like real may! Ketchup and mustard really cut the soy flavor down..

    I've never had it with hot dogs. My dad always sautéed it with sliced up smoked sausage.

    Bread (your choice)
    Deli turkey
    A little cheese (Swiss or provolone work well)
    Kruat
    Spicy brown mustard or BBQ wing sauce.

    Cut up a Knockwurst and simmer in the kraut or on a toasted bun (of your choice) split open the knockwurst and fry it, add cheese and kraut...mustard, potato salad on the side!
  • I love it on top of salads, but one of my favorite things for breakfast or lunch is an open face hot dog, Hebrew National 40 cal dog, 1/2 hot dog bun, mustard, jalapenos and LOTS of kraut :-) About 100 calories and delish!

    Here in Pennsylvania Dutch country we eat "Pork and Kraut", which is shredded pork loin mixed in with the Kraut.

    This sounds delicious! Do you just shred the cooked pork loin and mix it with the Kraut; or do youi cook them together and then shred the pork once it's cooked?

    I have a big container of sauerkraut and want to eat it but I grew up eating it with mayo and ketchup on hot dogs. To many calories that way. Any ideas?

    I love Sauerkraut and had it tonight with a pork chop. The sauerkrout was sauted in a tablespoon of butter with seasonings along with the Pork chop it was good! Sauerkraut is low in calories and carbs the perfect diet food. The low carb forum had a recipe for sauerkraut soup you can put it in the search engine to find it. I have not made it yet but will. SauerKrout goes good with sliced potatoes in it also. hope that helps you.
