Is this common sense? Running outside >>>>> treadmill

I just had to come here and say- I've recently started running again. This time, though, since I can't afford a gym atm, I've been running outside
WOW, it's a ton harder. I encourage anyone who runs, to actually hit the pavement. You'll find a much more challenging experience

It's so much more rewarding if you ask me. The dreadmill makes me want to shoot myself in the head. Outside I get to look at beautiful scenery, people-watch, feel the elements, breathe the fresh air, and see how far I went... so good...0

Yes, it is harder since you A) have nothing to 'pace' you like the treadmill does, have to step around, over things like curbs, rocks, etc, C) nothing is 'moving' you like the belt on the treadmill does.
It's definitely a better workout if all you're doing is running.
Personally, I prefer the treadmill most days as I do inclined intervals a lot.0 -
True dat!!! I agree wholeheartedly! I do both. And I'll tell you after running on a treadmill exclusively during the winter that first time back outside was a *****!!!!0

Normally a treadmill runner as only just starting out but going to hit it outside tomorrow if it's not raining as getting a little bored in the gym. Looking forward to the change in pace.0

totally!0

I only run outside, so far.
I'm starting to plan ahead for winter, and trying to find a pay-as-you-go gym specifically for the icy or very rainy days. I'm looking forward to experiencing the treadmill for the difference, but I know outdoor running will always be my choice.0 -
running for pleasure...definitely outside!
running for a workout...definitely on a treadmill.0 -
Oddly enough, I find it to be the opposite. I tend to run faster with greater ease outside. But then, I have always been a little different...0

I'm fairly certain that I am in the minority when I say I prefer the treadmill.0

This! It's so different. I prefer outside though. I am going to run on the treadmill tonight and every minute seems like it takes 5 mins to pass. Outside, my runs go so fast!0 -
I like the Dreadmill for running. I watch TV and music videos as I'm on there.
Outside I prefer to be walking or running a Trail somwewhere. Cant really do that though unless I get in the car and drive a ways.0 -
I only resort to the treadmill if it is dangerously icy out.0

treadmill is excellent for keeping trck of speed, calories, etc, and controlling hills0

I am the same. I run faster outside. I used the treadmill once and it took me so much longer to run the same distance. I did not care too much for the 'bounce'. lol0 -
i AM ALSO OPPOSITE!I feel like treadmill running is harder than outside running!0
-
I'm a numbers person, I like the treadmill because I can 'see' the progress in digital sticks that tell me the how far, how long and how high...
... but I hate making myself go to the gym some days, so I'm more than happy to strap on my shoes and take off like a goofy antelope around the neighborhood.0 -

I have issues with treadmills because I have a tendency to fall off of them.
So outside FTW.0 -
I am in agreement! I started running in 2010 before I got pregnant again, and on the treadmill I was easily running 2 miles. Outside? Without the cushiness of the treadmill?? Thought I was gonna die! Now, I'm adapting, and liking it outside so much better. And, I DO feel like I am accomplishing something more.0

this right in my wheelhouse...either way is cool with me...treadmills are fine (for me) b/c I like the fact if I need to drink that all my stuff is right in front of me...thus I help alot of folks out who are beside me to push them to go a little more...outside is great like you said fresh air, scenery etc...though I have never been chased by a dog in my gym lol...0

I keep seeing these posts, and it's kinda freaking me out. I'm on week 5 of C25K, and I'm really loving it (on my treadmill.) My plan is to work up a little more endurance (probably a week or two more on the treadmill) and then take it outside to get ready for a 5K I want to run in October. It's looking like I should anticipate kinda sucking once I go outside, huh?0

The one you aren't used to will feel harder.0

I love running outside, but I live in a very flat area so once in a while I hit the treadmill for some hill running.0

you have to account for the outside variables...running outside is different not all the comforts of the treadmill...adjust your breathing for being outside...debris...road conditions...weather...etc0 -

Same experience. When I'm on a treadmill, my HR is much higher and my perceived exertion is through the roof.
Outside, same pace, and it's pure awesome.0 -
I'm fairly certain that I am in the minority when I say I prefer the treadmill.
Count me in the treadmill minority too. My case is a little different though. I'm not able to run because of injury, so just walking outside it'd take me forever to burn off any significant calories. At least with the treadmill I can crank up the incline and sweat a little.0 -

I'm with you!0 -
I find running outside easier but only because I enjoy it more. It's a much less controlled environment, for better or worse0
-
I do both. I use the treadmill to work on my pace. When you set it at 7.4 miles per hour, it pushes you to have a steady pace and rhythm. This is where i fine tune my music and tempo for a race.
I love to run outside, and I do all my long runs there. I do hill work and tempo runs as well. But I always return to the TM for making my pace consistent.0
