Ok. You don't like a person. Let it go.

I've had someone do that to me. It's so lame.0

And as a reminder, there is an ignore function. If you don't like someone you neeever have to see them or a single thing they say. If you're reporting the same person more than once..the problem is you.0

I'm dumb. Can someone point me in the right direction to use that? Does it have to be someone you've friended on here, or can you just ignore some of the forum users as well?0 -

Doh! I should have known it was something easy like that
Cheers.0 -
There's the picture from the profile. Under the picture is the profile name. Next to that is a tiny triangle which is actually a pulldown menu. On that menu is "Ignore user".
Cheers!
[also, a post got deleted that was jokingly, I hope, labeled as "reported!". I didn't think it was terrible and needed deleting, nor did I report it. I just felt the need to say that]
ETA: Gah, IronAnimal got there faster. Yay for helpfulness! I hope this thread can stay 3 pages forever and stay this cool. Seems like cool threads get found and invaded by douchieness by page 4. Thanks everyone so far for being cool. It brings me back hope for the MFP World.0 -

I definitely misinterpreted it...but I definitely didn't report it!
I only report 14 year old girls and people who say they want to weigh 50 pounds...sometimes I can kill 2 birds with one stone too!0 -
There is no need to go after people. Perhaps you were friends and then you realized that they don't mesh with your values, your morals, your grammar skills, your fitness goals, your interests, whatever. Perhaps you weren't friends but you both post a lot in the forums and that person is on the other side of the divide from you and is therefore obviously an idiot: eat/don't eat exercise calories, cardio versus strength, barbie weights versus lifting heavy, being snarky when goaded or being whiny when goaded, no excuses, versus getting bogged down in the difficulties of fitting fitness goals into the reality of your life.
You get my point.
There are lots of people on here. You can hang with some of them, and some of them will bug the crap out of you and you'll think they're the worst human being ever. That's totally cool.
Here's what's not cool:
Chasing them around the forums saying mean things personally about them.
Chasing them around the forums for the purpose of reporting them.
Unfriending them because of their moral turpitude (that's ok, actually) and then repeatedly PMing them about how lacking in your morals they are.
Sending PM's to people you don't like. Again. And Again. And then again even though they've said to stop. Or they blocked your old account name, or they changed their account name to get away from you and your minions.
Chasing them into the private group they created so that they can share like-minded interests or snarkiness or religious beliefs that may offend or bother people in the main forums. You got there because someone currently on your friends list is a member of that group. If you don't like the group or people in it, unfriend your current friend. Don't go searching for something that will bother you. That's just ridiculous. It is in a private group for the purpose of NOT offending the people who would be offended.
Setting up a new account and trying to disguise it so you can then out them and their private group activity and then deactivate and hide. That's just weak.
Chasing people around forums or your friends' newsfeeds for the purpose of being bothered by certain people's profile pictures, but not similar profile pictures by other people. And then reporting people who you don't like for their moral failings but not the sexy back picture with no apparent bra on covering the front you can't see of the person you like or at least don't hold a grudge against.
Excessively reporting people you don't like just cuz.
If you're doing any of these things, they aren't wrong--YOU are. You are bothering them by following them around for the purpose of being bothered.
That burns no calories. That does not help you in your goals. Not your fitness goals, nor your apparent goals to be morally superior.
What you do is you defriend them. Or you state your disagreement with them when they show up on the boards talking about their asinine belief that you KNOW is completely false. And then you move on and go about your day. If they idiotically disagree with your brilliance, you disagree with their statement, but you don't call them idiots or morally inferior or anything like that.
Several of my friends have been extremely hurt recently by douchebaggery like the stuff I listed above (and probably stuff I'm not aware of too). Even more of my friends were targeted by douche-y behavior like this, but they are strong enough in their path to not be bothered. But my point is, the above behavior is hurting people I care about, and it is not the kind of behavior adults who are thinking about what they are doing do.
So, please. Stop. You are better than this.
Even the people I don't like and would be tempted to do any of the above to. They are better than this too. I won't do what I listed above (at least not again after I reflect upon a mistaken act). But I will delete people who have been doing this to my friends, and I'll do it in the future. It just isn't cool, and it needs to stop.
Commence flaming, I really don't give a whit
WOW I never knew that there are stalkers here.0 -
I agree with this 100%. :drinker:
I have to take breaks from the forum now and then because the jr. high behavior drives me crazy. It always amazes me how immature adults can be. I always tell my kids that you don't have to like everyone but you do have to be polite. If my 5 year old is able to figure that out you would think adults would, too. It's so sad.0 -
I got a warning from it, so I guess someone misinterpreted it. Ah well.
This is a shame. The thread was about NOT looking to get one's nose out of joint and go causing trouble. The post was not egregious. It could be interpreted bad, but it could be interpreted great. When he was given an opportunity to explain, he did, and it was cool. I'm not criticizing the mods here, as it was reported and the one way to interpret it may have looked like it was going against the rules.
But really, if whatever insult was there, you had to bend over backwards to see and it wasn't directed at you, why actually report it?
People, please stop looking to be offended and then causing trouble for people. That was my point.0 -

So what am I doing wrong, no one stalks me, reports me or follows me around anywhere. Maybe I am a stalker and don't know it... I also never see the people with EDs that others do...
Seriously though, if this its going down it is really crap, but wow it surprises me!0 -
Fairly new to the message boards, but thank you all.
I enjoyed this thread quite a lot.
Good stuff, witty responses. Made me laugh.
I'll be sticking around until someone begins to stalk me.0 -

TL;DR. UMAD BRO!?0 -
OP, well said. Thank you!0

Agreed - well said.0

Great post.0

Thank you for the post. I had no idea there were stalkers like that o.O0

Whilst I agree with the sentiment in the OP and find it well expressed I think, sadly, it won't solve or change matters much on a practical level. It's preaching to the converted.
If you have the self awareness to take a step back and consider your actions then you probably don't need to be told what to do. People who lack that ability will see their actions as morally justifiable and a "crusade" against injustice. Dealing with people who are heavily emotionally charged can't generally be done with reason. It's a waste of time.
I think people have two traditional choices if my time online is anything to go by:
a) block, put on ignore and report
b) take the chronic piss until your opponent either see the funny side or run off crying like little children
I am a huge fan of b)*
I have found that if that if you go down the second route your online life tends to be more fun. Funnily enough if you show abusers from the very start that you will abuse them they they don't abuse you and you end up not being an abuser...
(* if you lack the confidence or ability to do so then please let me know as I offer this service for a small fee.**)
(** I'm kidding. My fee is rather large.)0 -
Forum trolls are as old as the internet and, like those little invasive fresh-water bacteria that cling to the side of fishing boats and transfer from lake to lake, they don't go away.
Be nice to them. Be mean to them. Whatever.
Trolls are trolls.
The most efficient thing to do is ignore them or, perhaps just quote their comment and type the word "troll" in your one-word post so others will more readily identify them and be inclined to ignore them.
Trying to smack a troll just makes them more vicious.0 -
tabulator and msf, I agree with you about what you said. The stuff I'm talking about is more than just your everyday internet trolling. More than I disagree with you on the internetz and you hurted my feelings by being meanly funny.
I'm talking about people PMing others for the purpose of re-explaining that they find them to be slutty or ugly or fat or of loose morals.
That's just stupid. And my hope is that if people label that behavior enough, eventually it dawns on the folks doing the behavior that they're not actually right, especially when they feel superior.
Thanks for adding your voice to the "don't take this stuff so seriously" movement. Hopefully, together, we can reduce the butthurt and douchebaggery on this site.0 -
mmmmm....loose morals.0

Well, if that is happening then yeah, I agree with you. Would any sane person go to another person's house and post a poison pen letter through their letter box just because they disagreed with someone? Calling out that behaviour and discussing it perhaps is a starting point.
I'm still waiting for the day that someone tries to do that to me though and I have been here a long *kitten* time. I guess they must be satisfied with *****ing about me behind my back. Or maybe it's because I am so sweet that no one has a bad word to say about me. Wait, what's that! Oh, yeah, it's a flying pig....0 -
ABSOLUTELY!0

Not recommended as this can actually get you a warning.0 -
No kidding! I love how with over 7 billion people on this Planet, there are some people who feel like every single one of us 7billion + should agree 100% with everything they say and think. Get over it, and move on.0
