Gary Jules-Mad World (better than the Tears for Fears original, IMO)
    Cowboy Junkies- Sweet Jane
    Nirvana-Man Who Sold the World

I know there are many others I am forgetting, but these are the first to come to mind

ETA: Jeff Buckley-Halleluja (how could I forget that one!)

You stole all of mine! No fair!

BTW, you clearly have excellent taste in music.

I often watch Dave Grohl's cover of "Tiny Dancer" on the Craig Kilborne show on YouTube. It's not even that great, hah, but there is something about it that I love.

Whiskey In the Jar - Metallica

    45 - Shinedown

There was also one that Pearl Jam covered but now I can't remember the name! It was a song from the 50's I believe about a young couple who's car stalled on railroad tracks and got hit by the train. The girl died.

    Last Kiss - good call

Yes! THANK YOU! It's been driving me nuts...

Johnny Cash singing the Nine Inch Nail's song "Hurt." It's heart-wrenching, I cry every time I hear it.

A distant second is A Perfect Circle's remake of "Imagine."

I have to say any cover Johnny Cash did (Hurt, Rusty Cage, One, Personal Jesus). He had a way of taking any song and making it his own. Not sure if they count as covers since they don't appear on any album, but the Civil Wars' covers of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean and the Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm are amazing. Both can be found on YouTube.

The Cure did that song originally and it has been covered a couple of times. And let's just face facts... all these covers wouldn't be so good unless the original was completely awesome... and it is...

ZZ Top's new song Gotsa Get Paid is kind of a cover of the song 25 Lighters on My Dresser.

I'm a big Metallica fan, but they should have left Turn The Page and Whiskey In The Jar alone. The originals are better.

Pearl Jam does a great 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away'
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
The Turtles - It Ain't Me Babe
The Ramones - Out Of Time and Needles And Pins
The Clash and Tom Petty do good versions of I Fought The Law
    Bruce Springsteen's version of Trapped
    Cream doing Crossroads!
The Beatles - Please Mister Postman
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
Eddie Money - You Really Got A Hold On Me (The Beatles version isn't too shabby either)
J Geils Band - Where Did Our Love Go? (smoking!)
    Gary Jules - Mad World
Linda Ronstadt - It Doesn't Matter Any More

    Flickerstick - Fade Into You
(awesome in it's own right, and means a lot to me. good stuff.)

    Johnny Cash - Hurt
(In this case, I think the cover is so much more meaningful than the original. And I love NIN)

    Gary Jules - Mad World
    (Love this version)
