Sometimes I don't swallow....

I was talking to my sister yesterday at a 4th of July party, and I mentioned that in an effort to moderate my calorie in-take, sometimes I don't actually swallow my food, I just chew it and politely spit it out. She said that has to be some sort of an eating disorder, but I disagreed and told her that I bet alot of people do this. So, I'd thought I'd ask today on here today....sometimes, do you not swallow on purpose?

All I can think about is that scene in "Sex and the City" where that dude that Miranda goes out with chews his food and spits it out. YUCK!!
Edit to say, NO I don't spit my food out. I always swallow it !

I've heard of anorexics doing that. May not mean you are one, but likely not a healthy behavior.

Not as a rule, BUT there have been times that I didn't think about what I was doing and popped something in my mouth, realized how NOT worth it it was to me or my calorie count and spit it out...

Sounds disgusting, and a little concerning. Are you getting adequate nutrition otherwise?

Seems like a very unhealthy relationship with food.

At the very least it is the beginnings of an eating disorder.

Yes it generally is an early sign of bullemia, You should probably talk to your doctor about it.

Besides... everyone likes a swallower better than a spitter...

    The crowd has spoken.

Either swallow, or don't put it in your mouth.
  • I have struggled with an eating disorder and this definitely sounds like the beginning to one.

I agree with this- I've never heard of anyone doing it as a means of weight control...I am obviously not a dr or expert but this certainly sounds like the first steps down a dangerous path.

this seems really concerning, if you don't want the calories don't eat the food, but definitely don't masticate and then regurgitate! There is a big difference between avoiding bad foods and avoiding swallowing your food, the latter seems like a big problem.

This is INCREDIBLY common among people with eating disorders. It's not healthy at all. Either eat the food or don't eat the food.

Yeah, that's a trait of anorexia. I know quite a few that did that.

Nope, never done it and I would think of it as a large amount of wasted food? not to mention how unhealthy it sounds to be doing this.
