Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this for us. I do many of your, "rules," but I need to work on #8 - putting the fork down. I don't know that it will help me eat less, because I weight things out before they go on the plate and I don't refill. But it would allow the meal to go slower. I feel like I make everything and, "WOOOOSHHH!!!" it's gone like it's an eating competition or something. It's good to learn to take things slow and enjoy food instead of shoving it all in as fast as possible like I have always done.
I'm in a little but of a rut right now, so I am going to print your list and tack it up where I can see it every day just to keep me in check.0 -

Thank you for posting your sensible tips! There's so much confusing information on here, it seems like I lose sight of common sense sometimes.
My husband and I switched to using salad plates for dinner, and we fill half of the plate with whatever the veggies are, and then use the other half for the starch and protein. It's been working very well to help us get enough veggies, and control portion sizes. Also, I just try to burn about 500 calories a day in some kind of exercise, which is similar to your tip #4.0 -

Excellent, common sense approach. Balanced.... I like this. No "don't cardio or you will get fat"; "eat at least 5000 calories per day or you will get fat" or even meal timing schemes here... Just simple day to day common sense. So rare these days. Nice post.0

These are excellent tips! I've just begun my journey, but I've already taken on several of these tips. For example, I eat all of my meals on bread plates rather than dinner plates, include a fruit or veggie and a glass of water with every meal and snack, and have started exercising a minimum of 60 minutes a day, every day. So far I've lost one inch off my upper arms and calves, 2.5 inches off my waist and hips, and 3.5 inches off my thighs, and have officially lost 6 pounds over the last three weeks (I wasn't weighing myself before, so there's no telling how much I've lost in total over the last 8 weeks).

I am new here so I'm really not sure how this works or how to navigate. But happening upon your blog I was able to get a few suggestions that I haven't tried yet. I have been using MFP since April needing to lose 35lbs. I haven't done much since my husband passed, but sit in a chair. So now 2yrs later and 35lbs over I am returning to life. I have only lost 6lbs since april, but I am on alot of meds including prednisone, so it's going to be really hard to move that dial. I guess my BMR is really low because I haven't done anything in quite a while, I have bumped up the activity and I like the 5:30 rule. Thanks for the blog0

Wow great advice! Ive lost 28 lbs so far , but when i reach my goal weight it will be a 100 lbs lost~ it was great to read tips from someone who has actually did the work to lose the weight! Running has become my best friend , completed 5ks and just the other day my first 10 k! Next goal a half marathon! So any tips on training for half marathon and seems like ive hit a plateau ~ i stay around 1200 calories a day and run most every day at least three miles sometimes 6, and i cycle as well! any advice from your experience would be helpful0

I laughed when I read #5! That's me...sit around the house and get hungry just to do something different. I haven't been doing that since I started MFP, because the whole "write it down" thing has worked really well, but just today when I didn't want to do some work on the computer, I found myself wandering into the kitchen. Old habits try to resurrect themselves.
About #11, I noticed something interesting when I started pulling out my grandmother's china for weekly family dinners. The plate is the same size as today's dinner plate, but the border along the rim takes a full inch off the outer edge, and it's tilted slightly up in addition. We naturally don't cover up the border area with food. When we have a meal on our regular dinner plates, there is no border "guarding" the edge of the plate. So eating from a salad plate is a great idea, and mimics what our more slender grandparents would have used for real estate on the plate.
