Rings and weddings are dumb. I can't think of a more glutinous thing in our society. When my daughters want to get married, I think I'll just tell them the money I would have spent on the wedding is in a trust. They'll thank me after they are divorced and have a good junk of change later in life. And if you have a big wedding for your second marriage....well you know

not everyone who gets married spends thousands! We paid 45 for out marriage license, 25 for the JP, and I spent 30 on my dress, and like 5 on a tie for hubby lol. Oh and his ring was about 20. I would NEVER pay a lot of money for anything like that. Ridiculous. I'm cheap though.

We went justice of the peace too and it wasn't that expensive. I bought our rings on ebay for $20 each a few months after we got married (Mine was a fake so I couldn't wear it anymore cause it made my skin on my finger break out). He came home from Iraq and gave me a $1800 ring (they gave him a discount so it was a little less than that cause they had to order it in my size) which is real.

An engagement ring has to be given back if the marriage never happens. He can actually sue you for it.

    actually it doesn't, it's a gift.
Yep, a gift which he returned to her. She doesn't have to give him a penny after his childish breakup! What a coward.

Maybe she did something to deserve that break up as well. You never know only hearing one side of the story.

In California, by law, if a guy breaks off your engagement you can legally keep the ring or sell it. I think I would give it back to him though unless he was a real jerk... haha

Well, obviously some people need to read up on contract law before giving answers on the internet. Since he mailed it back and told you to keep it you're good. I'd keep whatever correspondence he sent you though just in case.

It depends on the state in which they live. In some states it's considered a gift not a condition of marriage.

I would hope that if it didn't work out and wasn't just the guy being a cheater or a douche, that a little sense of morality would compel most to return the ring... but sadly this doesn't seem to be the case around here... :frown:

If you read the entire post the OP states she did send the ring back to him and he sent it back to her because he didn't want it and he told her to sell it. She did.

He says that I'm the devil and that he doesn't want it back. I'm a sunday school teacher and I leave in January to do missionary work, so I never really understood...

He told me to sell it. So I did. :)
No one should be dumped over text message. Especially by their fiancé.
    I don't feel bad.

Take the money, and put it aside, you are going to do missionary work - you never know when you might need the extra cash.

^Agreed. There is actually a law against spending the money. Gifts in contemplation of a marriage are the property of the person who bought the gift when the proposed marriage doesn't take place.

Oh dear god..."give it back...give it back..."

SCREW THAT! Go buy yourself something awesome! :)
  • In the state of TN appellate courts say engagement rings are conditional gifts that must be returned to the gift giver if the condition -- namely, the marriage -- does not take place, regardless of who broke off the engagement.

With that being said, if you're not giving the money back to him spend just a little on you and donate the rest to a worthy charity. Feed some children, help the homeless, support orphaned animals... something you can feel good about. That's going to go a lot farther than anything material that you buy.

I thought it depended on why the marriage never happened. Such as if he goes and cheats on you, so you guys break up, that so called contract was voided by HIM which means you get to keep this ring.
