Can you explain for me, then, why Canada, a country with strict gun laws, and virtually no hand guns in the public's hands, has 1/6th the rate of murders by gun per 100,000 people than the USA does? Murders by other means are lower, too. Nothing to do with population - I've already reduced it to a ratio to normalize the data.

If you make a claim then you need to provide a source, otherwise it's just numbers that you made up. You can't really compare a frozen wasteland to America either, they're completely different.

How about from the United Nations?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence

If your counter argument is to paint an entire country as a "frozen wasteland" then I have nothing to argue about with you. I made zero comments about the US, its people or what it stands for. I simply asked why gun related deaths are lower in a country just to your north with strict gun laws. Apparently, you have nothing to add.

The United Nations?!? You want to cite an organization that is so completely corrupt, which has been thoroughly discredited as a basis for an argument?

I wouldn't be so quick to paint Canada as a panacea, and I'm saying this as a Canadian. We have strict gun laws up here, but strangely enough, those who are so inclined to make indescriminate use of firearms in public venues in broad daylight don't seem to be bothered with going through the process of applying for a PAL (Canadian license for owning a hand gun) or an FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate - must be applied for separately from your PAL). More regulations are not going to change that fact. These people don't go through gun shops, they buy them off the street or in bars. There is gun violence up here, and its a pretty regular occurence in such garden spots as Toronto and Vancouver. Even in smaller places, like Winnipeg, there are shootings, although knives and blunt force instruments are more the weapon of choice due to their low/no cost.

People who are mentally ill are not going to pay attention to these kinds of laws, nor will the anti-social. In the case of the latter, like all bullies, they will pick on anyone they know to be defenseless. Strangely enough, if you look at places like Switzerland, where gun ownership is required of all male citizens (along with 2 years of service in the militia), or in US states where you have concealed carry, these kinds of incidents are much less frequent.

As Robert Heinlein once said "An armed society is a polite society."

Personally, I'd rather not be someone's prey, thanks.

I love the 10-22! I am getting a 22 conversion for my AR to enjoy that because 556 brass is just crazy. I could buy 1000 round tins but that might make me look like a nut.

Ya because these shootings ONLY happen in the US.....

They don't happen here! It's great. Only shootings in Ireland are drug dealers ****ing each other up

No they just try and blow each other up:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/28/us-irish-bombs-idUSBRE83R0AP20120428

You guys should really regulate bombs over there.

    your edit is so ridiculous

No its not, that person wanted to tout the moral superiority of their country.

What is wrong with Moral Conscience especially if it is better? America is no longer the land it was. People fear going out, use their cars as weapons even more than guns. And all you have to do is read some of the nasty comments here and see how aggressive we are in the states.

I can't wait to hit Ireland, hope it is as fabulous as Scotland was. I have been in many countries without guns, not a bad idea but you will never get it past the lobbyists, they run the country not us or the politicians

The Bill of Rights, and the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is CLEARLY Pro Gun... The Pro Gun "intent" of the Framers of the 2nd Ammendment was to establish a Deterrent to Tyrannical Government. Hunting is not mentioned at ALL.

Are you a Resident or Citizenof the US that does not Support, and Defend ALL of the Bill of Rights? If So, PLEASE, right now, drop what you're doing, and Leave This Country FOREVER. Any Citizen that does'nt defend the Rights of All Citizens is is either ignorant, or foolish.

Citizens of other countries do not enjoy the same protections we are blessed with by the Constitution.

Whether you are a citizen of another nation, or a "Liberal" Politician that wants to disarm my fellow Americans, You may not LIKE our freedoms, but thankfully you have no RIGHT to change them. If you care to try, just remember ALL THOSE GUNS will be here to deter you...

This is a document written for a world that existed over 200 years ago. It does not exist now and should be revamped

Pro-Gun and Pro-responsible use and ownership of said gun.

Should I be anti-fertilizer so that people can't make home-made bombs to blow the **** out of a building full of inncoent workers. Or would I be wrong because that is not fair to the farmers who use it as it is intended.

Should I be anti-knife so that chefs can properly slice foods or butchers cut meat or even a boy learn to whittle from his grandfather. But wait, don't rapists tend to use knives on their victims?

Should I be anti-bat so that we can't pay Barry Bonds millions of dollars to swing it at a baseball. Better not sell them at a store for some gang member may initiate another one in with a beat-down.

Should I be anti-music/movie/video games-with-violent-themes? Seems those have been blamed for a lot of the rise in underage crime?

Point is just about anything you touch can be used as a weapon. There are always going to be irresponsible people and criminals that are going to use stuff what it is not intended for. Educate yourselves and your family in the proper use of a firearm or any other weapon for that matter.

Why don't we worry about something that would have more of a positive impact on our population? Un-employment? Food shortage? Homeless people?

Instead we are worried about something that is a problem with maybe %0.5 of the population.

Thank you! You've said pretty much everything I could have. Crimes will happen. Anything can be a weapon. We are lucky to have due process to at least attempt to be fair when convicting someone accused of a crime. Of course, I'm a little harsh in the punishment. I think if most states brought back the death penalty, I'd certainly feel a lot safer, and it might dissuade a murderous thought or two.

As for guns... give me my guns! No offense, but the police are three minutes away (if you're lucky) and that danger is less than 30 seconds away. If you won't protect yourself and your family, don't expect anyone else to do it for you. Why should they?

I honestly don't know what the answer is.

However, I do question why it was so easy to buy so much ammunition from internet sites. It seems like there should be a way to limit it within a certain period of time.

Obviously, the guy was very unhappy and no one was able to see what was going on with him. I wonder if it's not so much of an issue of guns and weapons but our isolation as a society.

Hmmmm...... Timothy McVeigh did not use guns to detonate the OK Federal building. The terrorists on the planes on Sept. 11 did not use guns, either. I guess banning guns won't really stop terrorists and psychotic mass murderers after all, huh? Also...we do not just have the "right to bear arms" so we can defend our house or hunt a deer. We protect ourselves from tyranny. That is the most important reason.

It's my Ruger 10/22, under the barrel is a bipod for shooting long distance and the other thing is a angled foregrip for when you're standing up and shooting.

I imagine I will p!ss a lot of people off with this opinion, but if you're using the 2nd amendment for your argument, your argument is invalid. Most that cherry pick the constitution to suit their agenda misquote it. The 2nd amendment allowed for gun ownership, which back in the day was a, what, musket, as part of an organized community militia. Forgive my southern, but ain't none a'ya'll part o' no dang militia. Have your personal revolver for home protection, have your rifle for hunting. That's all anyone needs. Guns are like a lot of things. Just because they exist, doesn't mean you should have one. I'd like to have a nuke just so I could play US vs. China with anyone that pisses me off. See how that wouldn't be a good idea?

Do not even try and take my guns or ammo. We reload here when we can but also buy from internet sites, wholesale. We can go out and shoot 500 rounds easily just target shooting. Don't allow one nut to ruin it for all of us. My husband is a gun dealer. We have never had anyone who bought a gun, and he ships all over the USA, come back with gun being used in a crime. Hundreds of customers happy and hundreds of guns sold and not ONE traced back to them used in a crime.
