a special kind of fat that won't go with dieting...

Oh the weird things you hear while staying at a hotel.
I was sitting outside on the terrace on my own yesterday evening, having a drink, reading a book and minding my own business. On the adjacent table a group of work colleagues were sat chatting and relaxing after a day on a work course.
There was this one plumpish lady in her 30s was talking to one of her colleagues: "Oh, I've got this medical condition where I have a layer of adipose fat under my skin. It's not like the fat you get from food that forms around your muscles that will become muscle when you exercise. This is fat that doesn't go away with dieting, because I've tried diets and exercising and the fat doesn't shift. ..."
Her colleague responds: "You'd think nowadays that they'd have some injection that they could give you to get rid of this fat."
The lady in her 30s continues: "You know the average length of time for diagnosis of this condition is 15yrs."
Oh, how I love eavesdropping and people watching

It's the Government man! They're spraying us with chemicals and putting hormones in all our food and that's why I can't get rid of the man boobies! :grumble:0 -
How did you manage to keep a straight face?
It is sad though how many people are happy, almost proud, of having a label for a condition (correct or otherwise) so it becomes a burden they are so strong for living with rather than something they should work on to better themselves.0 -
Don't know if I should laugh or cry!0

If I were in that conversation, I'd be telling her straight: "Suck to be you. I guess you'll be fat the rest of your life."
I don't like to hear BS from other people.0 -
It does exist, although maybe the woman wasn't referring to Lipedema and was just trying to justify her behaviours.0

Being ill doesn't make me proud. one should be proud of being healthy, but they aren't. they all want some sort of disease or another.0 -

lol same!!!0 -
So after a little checking, there is condition called "Ectopic fat disposition" (The deposits of fat in non-muscle tissue ares, usually organs like the liver & pancreas). And, part of the causes are based on genetic and race. Both of which are out side of living a healthy life style.
I would need to research more but this lady might actually have a medical condition that she cannot control or improve with diet and exercise.
It still seems to me though that a healthy diet that is low fat would at the very least not hurt and perhaps help mitigate?

I know a girl who actually has Lipedema... Her top half is normal size but the rest of her from the waist down is completely disproportionate...
Was she extra pear shaped? It doesn't really cause fat above the waist...1 -

I think people do this type of thing for attention, so they can get a pat on the head and an "aww, how terrible for you"0 -

Thank you. Folks, please realize that there are medical conditions that can cause just about anything out there. That said, they're generally pretty rare. I knew a woman who was getting a medical degree who insisted her obesity (and I don't mean obese like me, I mean 300lb at 5'2") was due to her hypothyroidism. That can certainly cause weight gain, but she would also eat Snickers just about continuously through lectures. So just because someone has a condition doesn't mean they couldn't do better, either. But try to be nice and don't judge- she just might have been telling the truth.0 -
sounds like a serious case of "fatonmythigh".0

 Yes, I definitely want this injection too...:laugh:0 -
You just made my whole day!!! I love people that find excuses for why they are the only ones on the face of the whole planet that just can't lose weight or get rid of that annoying fat!!0
-
Hey, I'm pretty sure there was an episode of Doctor Who (in fact I'm sure) about "adipose". What a load of rubbish!0
