I agree in that I don't think this is a portrayal of a true BDSM relationship, but that it uses BDSM to illustrate the self-esteemless population's wet dream of being SO desired by another person that that person will DO anything. Being desired in that way (no matter how insanely unhealthy and criminal) is appealing because when you have NOTHING inside (self-worth, self-respect, in the case of Ana, brains, etc.) than having someone else seem to be so desirous of you that they will stop at nothing to have you, even if in every other instance they make you feel terrible, is very appealing. If any of this rings a bell for you, I urge you to put down 50 shades and pick up ANY SELF-HELP BOOK that's ever been written because even though 97% of it is garbage, at least the *heart* of it is in the right place...usually.

Holy crap, I think you hit the nail right on the head! I also think that was a huge part of the attraction in "Twilight" as well.

I was talking about this book with an *ahem* "friend" last night and I was teling him how, in reality, I think the majority of the women who've read this book would freak right the hell out if their boyfriend/husband/whatever ever tried some of this stuff on them. Maybe they'd be ok with some light spanking, but actual pain and humiliation? I just really don't think there are that many women who truly, truly enjoy being used in that way.

allison janney! She made that movie for me!!!

I totally forgot that was Allison. LMAO - so funny.

my friend gave it to me to read, she said it was awful, but I wanted to read it anyways to know what the whole fuss was about. I am anticipating it being awful... who knows when I will actually get around to reading it.

    hahaha yes!

This actually reminds me - there's that one scene in the book that is set to music, and I was curious about the piece so I looked it up on YouTube, and the person who had posted the piece there had written in the information field, "May your tastes be elevated beyond the book that lead you here" - which I thought was hysterical!!

Meanwhile, I read the trilogy, and enjoyed it (though probably not the way the author wanted me to) in many ways BECAUSE of the bad writing, but at the end of the day found it utterly forgettable. In all seriousness, I can't remember most of it at this point, and I certainly didn't come out of it wanting Christian. I'm hugely curious about how they'll pull off a movie.

I actually wonder if the movie will be better simply because you can't really get into Ana's head

Edit: Plus, movies based on books never do the books justice....so a movie may be the best thing to ever happen to this book.

Not sound sexist but this book & the way it's sold so many copies makes me believe women shouldn't have the vote! I'm sure even women question their right to vote after it shifted over 20 million copies. Sure men like **** porn but we don't sell it in such volume nor make it such a cultural phenomanan! FOR SHAME WOMEN*

Please note this is totally tongue in cheek

Read them and loved them. Though I have to admit by about the middle of book three I was craving more of a plot. But overall I really enjoyed them.

I just have one question............Where can I find my own personal Christian Grey?

Why in Gods name would you want an abusive prick for a boyfriend?

That review is pretty hilarious. Although if anyone honestly read that book for a "good read" then they were kidding themselves. It's EROTICA, books in that genre aren't intended to intellectually stimulate...

I read all three and enjoyed them for what they were!

Thanks for sharing the review, I particularly enjoyed her photo of her "inner goddess" :)

If you think that was good erotica, I feel sorry for you. :o) You need to find some GOOOOOOD erotica, like Anais Nin or The Sleeping Beauty trilogy. Now THAT'S how it's done, not this "Christian Grey whip me, beat me" crap. Those books read like my high school kids' research papers.

And for the chick(s) who want their own personal "Christian Grey", please get some psychological help. Seriously.

    *kitten* 50 shades

You want hotness? Read JD Robb's "In Death" series.....good murder mysteries with just enough sex thrown in to make it steamy. And Roark puts Christian Gray to shame...............Irish dudes are way sexy.

I love JD Robb! She is by far my favorite author. Her Nora Roberts books are a close second.

I've never been much of a fan of romance or of what this particular book is considered - "mommy porn" so I don't have much of a desire to read the 50 Shades trilogy. Oh, and that review is pretty comical, I definitely was chuckling throughout it.

If you have read it, are thinking about reading it, or would NEVER read it, read this:

Yeah... I'm on page 20...and I put it down. I can't... There's too much lip biting and stupidity... Hilarious review though :)

I'm going to try to explain this....If you actually read the entire series, he never ONCE makes her do anything she doesn't want to do. The ONE time in the ENTIRE series that he hurts her she literally ASKED him to. Now, does that mean she's an idiot? Yes. lol But its a BOOK. She's NOT REAL. I think it's hilarious that the majority of the people that are so angry about the book haven't even read it or have only read the first book. Their relationship changes immensely throughout the series and by the end you actually feel sorry for Christian. Women like it because it's the story of what many women dream about....to change the "bad boy" into a loving, caring family man. On top of that he's gorgeous, rich, and apparently a God in bed. It's that simple.

Now, am I saying it's a great book that everyone should read? No. I'm just saying it's not nearly as horrible as people make it out to be and I'm kind of confused as to why so many people are so angry about it lol.

I haven't read it nor do I plan on reading it. It's not my cup of tea. I don't need to live my sexual fantasies through someone else, when I'm perfectly capable of having them fulfilled. BTW, the video of the baby and cat. all I have to say is, " Good for you kitty!" The rotten kid deserved it!
