I wouldn't ***** a kid out. I'll go even further and say I also wouldn't care if someone *****ed my own kid out for having an iPhone.

My 11 year has a regular phone not an iphone but if your daughter doesn't abuse it, why not. He mainly has it because when I drop him off at activities (mainly Boy Scouts), I want to him to be able to contact me if they finish early etc. I have an old blackberry I could have given my son but decided against it because I think it would it be used to play games mostly....he doesn't text anyone but me yet so I don't have to worry about it. I would be totally pissed if someone gave him an attitude and especially if parents aren't together I think it is very important for the child to have their own way to get ahold of the other parent if necessary.
My friend gave her son a phone when he was 9 and I thought she was crazy but realized it was for her piece of mind (she is divorced and shared custody) so I totally understand....people need to quite being so judgmental.

People barely read anymore as it is or if they are, it's ****ty books like Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey. I'm not even writing at the moment, I'm just working to pay off the useless degree that says I know how. I say useless as no one seems to give a **** about books unless a movie gets made for it first.. :/

Imagine reading a good story and then, oh no, you have a glitch and the next page won't load. So I guess you won't know what happens. And what if the power goes out? I guess you can't read when that battery runs out. And how can you get your favorite author to sign your book when it's on a Kindle?

I don't want to embrace e-books as people can pirate books off of it if they know how. Much like musicians, I'd lose money and publication companies take the vast majority of sales anyway. You need to sell millions to make a living off of it. So yeah, I'm a bitter writer.

My 10 year old has an android phone. She's a good girl. Does good in school. Does her chores and everything asked of her. In my opinion, she's earned it. I say screw the people that have something to say about it. They don't know you or her...

That is absurd. How is every parent supposed to afford an ipad for their child? Especially if they have more than one going to that school at a time. My mother wouldn't have been able to afford it at the time my brother and I were that age. I better hope I start making 6 figures before having a child because the requirements will get even more expensive by the time they're in school. :grumble:
Public schools going to this will provide the iPads in the classrooms. No one is making parents purchase an iPad. Many private schools already have this policy and the cost is written into the tuition.

It's still unnecessary. What's wrong with using textbooks? They aren't that heavy. :/
The issues with traditional textbooks are that they have to be disposed of and brand new ones bought once a new edition is released. The cost of materials, production, and transportation all get passed on to the schools.

A digital textbook doesn't have to be completely re-created when a mistake is found, so new editions get released less often.

I guess so. I guess as a writer I'm against e-books of all kinds. Now schools are starting to turn their backs on the good old-fashioned book. :(

wow ....why is everyone so against technology....books are becoming obsolete...why fight it? digital is cheaper, greener(if u care about that) and much easier to update like someone else said.

i love that i was able to give away a hundred pounds of books and replaced it with an 8 oz Kindle.

as a writer i would think you'd embrace ebooks...at least now you have a shot at getting your stuff read.

As a writer, I like to be surrounded by REAL books. You can't put 100 pounds of e-books on shelves in your home and you can't hold them in your hands. There are pros and cons when it comes to e-books, but I will never be someone who will read them in place of the real thing.

And plenty of writers get published and widely read in the traditional format.

Geez....16 pages.....cant go through all that. :D I will say you are entitled to give your DD whatever you want. But I think an IPhone is a bit over the top. My DD is 23 and just lost hers....thankfully she has insurance but what hoops they make you go through to file a claim.

What a crock. My husband reads financial books -- REAL books, not the kindle stuff and I read other fiction books. While I have the kindle app on my iPad I download books when it's something that I want to read right NOW and don't really feel like waiting the week for it to arrive. If I can wait then I'll get a regular book. I also love to browse the shelves at book stores and can spend hours there just looking. I don't think books are going to be obsolete because most authors are old school and won't go that way. Those who do are self published because it's easier and cheaper to go the ebook route. Believe me if when it comes time for me to publish my novel if I run into enough of "no's" I am going to seriously consider the ebook self publishing route to get my stuff out there.

What is it that you write or will be writing?

Why is everyone so concerned about what other people have?? Who cares if a kid has a cell phone. I would think it would put the parents at ease knowing if something happened (kid missed the bus, soccer practice is cancelled, whatever) then they can call their parents.

I didn't have a cell phone when I was 10... But that was 22 years ago and NO ONE had a cell phone. There were also pay phones all over the place back then. Try and find one now.

I think it is sad that kids rather play on iphones, ipads, nintendo, etc than be outside playing a game of kick the can, or capture the flag.

without reading all other comments. I see no problem with a rugrat having a phone. An iphone is definitely overkill because in my opinion, it serves as entertainment more so than a means of communication.

Yet it's none of my business.

edited to say: Obviously, I would silently judge the parents.

i guess ive made some assumptions that are not true.. i guess it comes from the fact the people im talking about all work in offices and need those phones as part of their job and it just bleeds over into their life. but if you have a job, like the farmer you mentioned, that doesnt need the smart phone capabilities there would be reason for them to not have one at all.
I can think of at least 3 dozen reasons a farmer would & should use a smart phone.
    name them :)
    1. Call
    2. Text
    3. Email
    4. Internet searches
    5. Weather apps
    6. Geography apps
    7. Level apps
    8. Measurement apps
    9. Listen to music while on the tractor/combine
    10. Watch videos while on the tractor/combine
    11. Read a book while on the tractor/combine
    12. Play a game while on the tractor/combine (Farmville anyone?)
    13. Update Facebook
    14. Update Twitter
    15. Keep detailed records of animal immunizations
    16. Keep history of dairy animal milk output
    17. Use Skype/Facetime to broadcast live video of animal ailments to the vet
    18. Take pics of just about anything for documentation/artificial memory purposes
    19. Add supplies to your store cart while standing in the storeroom taking realtime supply inventory
    20. Aggricutlural news
    21. Digital forms for drivers that pick up resources like daily milk supply
    22. Farmhands can us them for tracking billable hours
    23. Track farm futures in realtime
    24. TractorHouse tractor sales app
    25. Plant health apps
    26. Soil analysis apps
    27. Grazing tracker apps
    28. Taking notes
    29. Keeping to-do lists
    30. Tracking payroll status
    31. Transfer funds between business bank accounts and personal bank accounts
    32. Pay bills (tractor loan, ranch house mortage, etc.)
    33. Check the scores of the Packer game
    34. Calculator
    35. Browse resumes for potential farmhands via Monster
    36. Let's be honest - porn

I was born long before iPhones and home computers and I've never played kick the can. What is this, 1950?

ive used my Kindle a lot and never had a glitch. but if it did happen im sure the easy fix would be to re download the book.

the battery lasts a long time...and the warning light gives you at least a day of warning before it runs out(mine has never run out)

i dont care about author signatures but there is something that they do use now in place of the book itself...a plate or something.

and yes piracy will be more of an issue but as i said before most writers in the past never had a chance to expose their work to the world. now you can put your book on Amazon and if its good people will talk about it. the problem is there is a lot of junk to weed through.

An iPhone also isn't much more expensive than a regular phone anymore. It's 100 bucks with a 2 year subscription. I really dont see the big deal.

Our school has a "classroom set" of textbooks (which cost nearly $90 a book three years ago)....they're falling apart already. They simply don't make books like they used to PLUS they are VERY heavy. I've been teaching 16 years, and I'm amazed at the lack of quality(construction). That being said, we also have eTexts for all kids; it's very nice because if a students struggles with reading, he/she can listen to the story while following along. Our school is planning on integrating iPads this year, starting with our ninth graders. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE holding a book in my hand, but publishing companies are making it very unaffordable and the quality (of construction) of the texts today is shoddy.

On another note, I HAVE to have a land-line phone. Absolutely NO cell service where I live. Plus, I prefer the size of a land-line because I can tuck it between my shoulder and ear (I know...I could go blue tooth; however, I don't have service where I live).

And on to another topic....I have a 9-year-old son, and I will get him a phone when I deem it necessary. Personally, I don't see a need for it yet, but that's me--as his mom. As a teacher, I can tell you they are a HUGE nuisance in the classroom. (Many) kids are addicted to their phones and it's a disruption during the day. I can have my phone, but if I forget it, my world won't come to a screeching halt.
