    My mother can't stand oatmeal and cites "texture" as the reason.

    I find that the texture of instant oatmeal is FAR DIFFERENT when you simply mix in boiling water, as opposed to adding cold or room temp water to it and microwaving. That makes it gummy. Also, add more water than you think you need.

    It's a mixed bag of answers. Some say yes; some say no. It has to do with what is being processed (oats, rice, etc.) and how it is processed (steel cut; parboiled, etc.), how it is prepared and what type of items you mix in.

    Most answers show that porridge is a much finer texture.
