The retrospective: 'I can't believe I used to eat that'

So now that I look at the nutritional information on EVERYTHING, I got to wondering what McDonalds (not eaten for 10 months and counting) food contains.

Back in my first job, I'd commonly eat the 'Hunger Buster'. Upsized. It was a $10 lunch special, and it contained:

1 x Big Mac
1 x Cheeseburger
1 x large fries
1 x chocolate sunday
1 x large Coke.

So I went onto the McDonalds site and put this together as a custom meal (http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/meal_builder.html).

It is:
Calories 1990
Cholesterol 140mg (46%)
Protein 54g
Calories from Fat 680
Saturated Fat 26g (130%)
Trans Fat 2.5g
Total Fat 76g (116%)
Sodium 2270mg (94%)
Vitamin A 960IU (20%)
Total Carbs 281g (94%)
Vitamin C 13mg (20%)
Dietary Fiber 12g (48%)
Calcium 750mg (70%)
Sugars 150g
Iron 10mg (60%)

....yep. I used to eat that. Pretty much daily...

Your turn - time to come clean; bare your souls. What's the worst REGULAR meal you used to eat? Not like that time you ate a whole Meatlovers pizza from Dominos because you had a bad day....genuine regular meals.

That is an awesome website. I didn't go out and find what I used to eat at other places, I just stuck with McDonald's because it was much easier, because they did the calculations for you. This is what I would have normally eaten for lunch before MFP:

    1 McDouble
    1 Small Fry
    1 Coca Cola
    1 Apple Pie

    Calories 1020
    Cholesterol 65mg (22%)
    Protein 28g
    Calories from Fat 390
    Sodium 1230mg (51%)
    Vitamin A 500IU (10%)
    Total Fat 43g (66%)
    Total Carbs 135g (45%)
    Vitamin C 19mg (30%)
    Saturated Fat 17g (85%)
    Dietary Fiber 8g (34%)
    Calcium 230mg (25%)
    Trans Fat 1.5g
    Sugars 60g

That is just 180 calories away from my daily calorie intake, oooo how awful!

For breakfast this is what I would have got before MFP:

1 Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddle
    1 Hashbrown
    1 Chocolate Milk

    Calories 840
    Cholesterol 270mg (91%)
    Protein 30g
    Calories from Fat 370
    Sodium 1800mg (75%)
    Vitamin A 1040IU (20%)
    Total Fat 41g (63%)
    Total Carbs 86g (29%)
    Vitamin C 1mg (2%)
    Saturated Fat 14g (68%)
    Dietary Fiber 4g (16%)
    Calcium 500mg (50%)
    Trans Fat 0.5g
    Sugars 37g

    Wow, what an eye opener.

Even before MFP, I never ate "fast food"

As a lifelong vegetarian, those places never appealed to me.

I do like chipotle though that is considered one of the most healthy "fast food" places. I used to get way too much rice.

I still go there, but I limit my rice to 1 scoop of white and 1 scoop of brown, and I also make sure that I have enough of my sodium allotment left to go there. My Sodium allotment is 1,800mg (self-imposed) and a chipotle bowl is anywhere from 900-1100mg of sodium.

I used to eat at Arby's thinking I was making a "good choice" b/c I'm not a huge fan of their french fries, and always get a turkey sandwich (sounds healthy to me!).

Depending on which one the sandwich alone is 700-800 calories.

I still eat fast food, but make wiser choices, and don't eat huge. MFP REALLY taught me a lot about that. ONE SANDWICH with no side THAT high? No thank you!

I can't believe that at my absolute worse (binge eating wise) a few years ago...I would go to a local BBQ chicken shop and pick up -

Chicken schnitzel plus a container of creamy potatoes with bacon and chips with gravy (both large)

Then I would pick up a chocolate bar to eat afterwards

*ick* makes me feel so ill to think about it. I am sure it was at least 2000 calories and that's a very conservative estimate.

Holy Smokes!! I used to order Pizza Hut big box meal for my family every Friday. I used to eat:

    6 Boneless Medium wings
1/3 regular size Meaty Marinara pasta
4 slices medium Canadian Pan pizza

    Calories - 2059
    Total Fat - 92
    Sat Fat - 31
    Trans Fat - 1.1
    Cholesterol - 191
    Sodium - 4049
    Carb - 210
    Fibre - 10
    Sugar - 21
    Protein - 94

OMG. I had no idea. I still have to fight with myself every single Friday night not to pick up the phone and call for one. Instead, I bake a this crust chicken pizza and make homemade breaded chicken and dip it in Franks sauce or something similar. Hits the spot at a fraction of the above numbers.

    Chick-fil-a! (pre anti-gay scandal)

A spicy chicken wrap with spicy dressing
A side salad with honey roasted sunflower kernels and reduced fat berry vinaigrette
    A large Diet DrPepper

    790 calories
    38g fat
    10g saturated fat
    80mg cholesterol
    1815mg sodium
    72g carbs
    9g fiber
    20g sugar
    41g protein

It's not completely horrible but it's pretty bad... Since I've started here I've eaten the spicy wrap a couple of times... minus the dressing (which by itself has 12g of fat) and the salad because the wrap is really enough and I can't even come close to being able to finish a Dr. Pepper of that size...
  • This was well before MFP but I've been getting off fast food. Last time I ate at BK was almost 5 years ago when I got the worst stomach ache ever from a burger meal. Last time I ate McDonald's was almost 4 years ago when my bowels reacted violently and I couldn't run fast enough to get to the bathroom. Most other places no longer appeal to me, though if I find myself having to go there (long road trip and the rest of the car/car brigade votes to go there), I typically select from the "healthy" menus. All that fast food stuff is just nasty. That and I can't believe the amount of soda I used to consume...now it's reserved only for camping on the weekends and even then I find myself not wanting more than 2 (whereas I used to reach for 4 or 5).

I used to eat brown rice and whole wheat pasta, I've since learned
  • I was thinking about this the other day! I would eat a large pizza, order of wings, and at *least* a 12 pack of beer almost every Friday and I would hover at about 170 lbs. After I moved to a new unit where the PT wasn't as "mandatory" I shot up to 200 lbs eating the same thing. I guess the excercise was just helping offset the **** I was eating. I'm astonished at the amount of food I used to take in at ONE sitting.
    Thanks MFP!

    Pizza

I could easily put away 5 or 6 slices while dipping it in garlic butter, and going back for a slice or two later as a snack. So, I'm thinking 1500 in the meal, and 400 in the snack later. Wow.

    Here's what that totals:

I was never that into fast food either. I love things like pasta and bread. Naturally, I LOVE olive garden.

Here is what I would get ( no, not an "everyday" kinda thing, but on weekends and such):

    salad (probably two servings): 300 20 3 1520 22 4 4
    AT LEAST 2 Breadsticks with garlic-butter spread 280 4 0 740 52 4 10
    steak gorgonzola 1310 73 41 2190 82 9 81

All in all, that comes to: 1890 calories...plus all the other stuff.
    yuck.

Looking at a whole day of what I used to eat:

Breakfast at McDonalds, on the drive to the airport: Two sausage biscuits and a medium coke: 1,080 calories.

Lunch on Concourse C in Atlanta Airport: Wendy's. Baconator double (Hey that's reasonable, it's not a triple, I'd think back then.) Fries and a big sweet tea. 1,550 calories.

Dinner at some godforsaken hotel in the middle of nowhere. It's raining. I ain't gonna get out and walk in that. Call Papa John's. Eat half the pizza and some soda or a beer or two. 1700 Calories.

Then I'd eat the remaining pizza for breakfast! No wonder I was 265 pounds and climbing when I finally woke up.

I did this a while back and was pretty grossed out. I got deathly ill when I was 14 and ended up severely underweight (about 85lbs and 5'2") so I ate junk for a few years before it caught up with me. I also worked at McDonald's for a little while and got everything half off...manager told me I could have my grill food for free if I made it. I think he thought I was too girly to take him up on it.

I used to get a super sized number 2 meal which came with 2 double cheeseburgers, supersize fries and a supersize soda (sprite). As if that weren't bad enough, I'd tack on an M&M mcflurry. Here's the stats but keep in mind it was probably more...their fries have bumped down a size (what is now a small used to be the kids meal size) and the site only went up to large on the fries and drink

    Calories 2340
    From fat 840
    Total fat 93g (143%)
    Saturated fat 39g (197%)
    Trans fat 4g
    Cholesterol 210mg (70%)
    Sodium 2850mg (119%)
    Total carbs 311g (104%)
    Dietary fiber 12g (47%)
    Sugars 187g
    Protein 70g
    Vitamin A 35%
    Vitamin C 20%
    Calcium 100%
    Iron 50%

I still eat fast food but as far as the huge burger chains, I usually stick to Wendy's since it actually looks like food. I get a junior cheeseburger, value ($1) fries and if I have spare calories I'll get a value size chocolate frosty. 580 calories for the burger and fries, 880 with the frosty. It's still something I can only afford to do rarely (calorie wise) but it is tempting to get dinner instantly for $3.

Okay, so a regular day for me used to include:

Note every day was like this but there were enough that this can be considered as regular/normal

    Breakfast:
    1 x-large coffee - 2 cream , 2 sugar
2x McMuffins & 2x Hash browns (Note: Some days I would go to Tim Hortons and get basically their version of the same thing)

    Lunch:
Amirs Shish-Taouk plate (chicken, potatoes & salad) with a can of coke.
    or
1/2 BBQ chicken plate with fries & sauce
    or
Smoked Meat plate - sandwich, fries, slaw & coke

    After work snack (before supper)
    1 litre coke +/-
1/2 - full bag of chips
little tube of cream cheese dip

    Supper
Big Mac trio - super sized

There were a few favourites - this one stands out:

    2 x chigaco town pizzas
2 x boxes of microwave chips
    loads of tommy k
and to finish a tub of Ben and Jerrys
(and sometimes a box of jaffa cakes - which I always reassured myself were low fat).

With the BandJerrys it clocks in at......2448.....ouch.

I still eat at the dreaded McDonald's - just not nearly as often. I set my own damn calorie goal on here, lower than what it told me to - and I exercise and eat healthy enough to stay under it. So far, seems to be working.

Dieting is all about what you do with it.

You know those big party-sized bags of frozen chicken wings? I would bake the whole bag, and snarf the whole thing down by myself...smothered in Sweet Baby Ray's.

    With a salad.

But no carb-loaded side dish, because I didn't want to be a glutton

Of course, I was home alone because I couldn't let anyone see me eat that.

Back in my poor college days, my most regular meal was two double cheeseburgers and a large fry from McDonald's.

    Calories 1120
    Calories from Fat 510
    Cholesterol 160mg (53%)
    Protein 53g
    Sodium 2400mg (100%)
    Vitamin A 1000IU (20%)
    Total Fat 57g (87%)

    Dietary Fiber 7g (27%)
    Calcium 560mg (60%)
    Trans Fat 3g
    Sugars 15g
    Iron 7.5mg (45%)

I'd usually go home and add at least one can of Dr. Pepper to the mix too. Blech.
  • Bojangles 4 piece supremes combo, Bo sized (no biscuit- I don't like them)

4 Supremes (fried breast tenderloins), large fry, 32 oz Mt Dew, two cups of honey mustard sauce- 1270 calories, 56 grams of fat.

Every single day on my way to work- and I have a desk job, so I'd eat all that and sit in a chair for 5 hours.

I won't pretend I don't eat fast food or say that I'll never eat it again, but I'm doing my best to hold myself accountable and make better choices.

    At Mcdonald's, everytime I went (4-5 times a month) I'd get:

    2 McDoubles plain
3 Chocolate Chip cookies (every once in a while)
    1 Large sweet Tea

This all totals up to: 1530 cals, 61g fat, 28g saturated fat, 2.5g trans fat, 160mg cholesterol, 1720mg sodium, 193g carbs, 124g sugar, and 51g protein.

This stuff doesn't even sound the least bit appetizing to me, these days. How times have changed....

In Jersey we have something called Disco Fries sold at pretty much every Diner. GIANT plate of fries with mozzerella cheese and brown or turkey gravy. I had the nerve to eat this with a vanilla milkshake to wash it down. Have no idea what the calorie/fat count was but lets just say probably more that 3 days of calories for me now. Never, ever again!
