I take 50 Shades for what it was, mind candy and just pure entertainment. If I wanted to stimulate my mind I would look at my old college English book list.

Sorry, I've read better. I'll take any of Megan Hart's book than 50 shades. The writing's better, the sex scenes are better...it's just better.

I haven't read it after hearing how bad the writing is. If I want to read fanfiction, I'll read GOOD fanfiction online... like I've been doing since I was 13 :)

If you're looking for kinky, fanfiction.net is probably your best friend...

    Bless (majority of) this thread

I come bearing NSFW gifts, for those who haven't seen/heard it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K1RcKJVbHA

I knew what this would be before I even went to the link. The first time I saw it I laughed so hard I cried. And maybe peed a little.

****ty writing, stupid story, and not BDSM. That **** is straight vanilla.

^^This. I felt my IQ dropping with each page I read. A little spanking? Bor-ing!!! Teach me something I can use! And what 21-year-old says "crap!" and "double crap!" and "oh my!" that often. SO stupid.

Although, it did open up my eyes to REAL erotica--at a friend's suggestion (who has a degree in sexology), I'm currently reading "Fanny Hill", "Venus in Furs", and "Fear of Flying".

    Try

Made for Sex by Joan Elizabeth Lloyd.

Trouble, Wicked, Sexy Devil, all by Sasha White.

One Wicked Night by Noelle Mack.

What Happens In Vegas by Jodi Kybb Copeland, Anya Bast, Lauren Dane, & Kit Tunstall.

    Tempted by Megan Hart.

    Going Down by Vonna Harper.

Thanks! I'll give these ones a try

It was a pleasantly erotic mindless holiday book.
If I wanted quality literature I would read the classics.
That doesn't make me (or anyone else brave enough to say they enjoyed it) stupid or poorly read.
    It's harmless fun.
    Totally agree!

I'd rather have sex than read about it.

And my husband could certainly teach Christian Grey a thing or two.

Don't understand the obsession, read regular romance novels with the sex more interesting than what was in that book!

I think what baffles me the most about the popularity of the book is that people read it FOR the sex scenes....not for the creepy 'love' story.

The characters suck, the sex sucks, the writing sucks....and the author is getting paid soooo much money. I can only imagine all the authors of amazing erotica (romance+bdsm+alltheworks+GOOD writing) taking a hammer to their laptops and giving up after reading this stuff.

shrug.....I enjoyed the creepy love story. The sex was rather vanilla, but I admit that I was a little shocked at how discriptive it was the first time (never read any erotica before).

Jeez, oh my. While struggling through the book, I kept getting distracted by the sound of the tearing of foil packets. I'm all like "oh crap!" I spent most of my reading time rolling my eyes at my inner goddess because she kept doing those dreadful backflips. It was so....HOT when he flushed his used condom down the toilet, then tied my tampon in a knot and put it in his pocket. Oh, er....I got that backwards, didn't I? I hope he's not mad at me.

    edited to add: oh, double-crap!

Story of O (Pauline Reage even with the publicized alternate ending, it's more real)
    Beauty Trilogy by A.N Roquelaure
    anything by Nancy Friday

I second the recommendation for the Beauty Trilogy! And the Story of O!

I did enjoy 50 Shades. Mindless summer reading. Wouldn't call them "boring" though.

I forgot to add John Norman's Books of Gor series...

I also found it boring and not very well written. I made it through 1/2 of the first book by forcing myself to read it to see if it got better and then just stopped reading it. I also am not into the whole domination and submission thing either. I don't know why these books are so popular. Most of my co-workers and friends also found the books boring and not very well written. I won't be seeing the movie if one is made either.
