VS "Love Your Body" Commerical Rant

I haven't been able to fit into ANYTHING Victorias Secret since freshman year of high school. Have you seen their suposed "D" cup bras..they are so far from an actual D cup..it is ridiculous.
Frederick's of Hollywood doesn't have my size either..at least not the last time I looked but at least I know they are made for curvy women. Women are SUPPOSED to have curves. Our bodies are made that way. I love my "dangerous curves" (as my friends call them)..I want them to get a little smaller but ultimately my shape ROCKS!!! I am not an hour glass...I am more like a 2 or 3 hour glass..but the shape remains....
I buy my bras from Cacique...and LOVE them!!!
Yeah, I'm an hourglass with extra minutes.
We don't have a Cacique in my area. And I prefer to buy my bras in person than offline as you don't really know what you're getting sometimes. Some bras size small, others run large. You kinda have to see it for yourself to judge that, a jpeg may misrepresent that. :P0 -
TORRID, AVENUE, LANE BRYANT..... check..them..out...
I agree with both sides, I think it's a stupid and silly ad.
HOWEVER... would any " plus sized" store get hit with " discrimination" ect for not carrying smaller sizes? No, because they are ' real" women.
I agree... I feel glorifing the 00-2 sizes is a little ridiculous, but it's always been that way. And do you know how many " skinny" women hate their bodies? Try to gain weight? How they HATE feeling like the " enemy" just because they are thin.
I'm a big girl... being called fat hurts sometimes. What makes you think being called " too skinny" wouldnt hurt ones self esteem, too?0 -
I agree that VS choosing to eliminate their bigger sizes is kind of strange, but really they aren't tailored to every shape big or small. The last time I went into a VS store, I was a 32DD. The woman laughed and said that I wasn't a real size. I'm not really sure what she meant, but I am a "real" size based on the tape measure at two other bra stores.
I find some of Lasenza's bras will fit, but they are all different and my size is never in stock. I'm going to try all these sites you girls keep posting. Thanks!0 -
Thread full of women upset that their exact body type isn't represented in every single commercial
This. Not every store is for every person.
I agree.
When I see those commercials it doesn't even cross my mind that they are too thin. I am a size 2-4 myself. I think they are graceful looking almost. But eh. I don't really want to see cellulite and rolls in my underwear commercials0 -
This^^ But I will admit I shop there...only place I will buy my undergarments so I am a bit bias. My mom is a full figure woman and she can buy bras there she just has to shop their online store. No company has to carry everyone's size that is just not logical. It is also NOT just a "big" girl thing. There are plenty of small chested women out there that cannot not shop VS, perhaps they are in between sizes or just too flat to fit their smallest size...did anyone think of that before just going to town with the VS hating?
This is perfectly said. Thank you! Girls with small sizes have issues too. DId you know that I can't find yoga pants in my size at Rue 21/ Forever 21/ Body Central etc. because they only order about 5 XS per order? ALL the stores are like that. So I go without yoga pants. It sounds silly to be annoyed about, but think about it this way: at least you have places you know for sure you can find decently priced bras in your size. If i want yoga pants (which i wear as regular pants because that's how I roll) in my size I have to pay a lot more money than I can afford. Just putting it into a little perspective.0 -
AND... I have heard that the people who MAKE VS bra's, ALSO make the Bra's for LANE BRYANT.
SO, check it out...they have some cute bra's.0 -
I wish they would bring back the show "How to Look Good Naked." There was a very short run of it in the U.S. with Carson Kressley as the host, and I occasionally will see a rerun of a BBC episode with Gok Wan. That's the sort of thing women need to see more of to combat the self-loathing messages bombarding them from all the other ads and shows.
I used to love that show!0 -

Love this post!
The plus size part is so true.
I don't really see the guys complaining about underwear commercials either. The ones with ripped men, with a nice 6 pack. I never see any men/women complaining that they are not "real men"
*shrugs*0 -
I find that both the Dove and the VS love yourself/body ads only market to a certain group of women, thick/curvy or tall/skinny... I don't see myself in either.
That being said, I try not to read too much into it. It isn't like they created the ads as an attack on me or bodies like me... I understand where they are both going with their ads or what they are both trying to achieve, but also know that there will always be someone somewhere that feels that these places are not representing them or their body type.
If you don't like their brand, don't shop there. Sounds like you might be upset because you can't shop there...don't do that to yourself. Do not take their lack of sensitivity personally. You are $exy and there are tons of other places you can shop that have just as nice or just as $exy clothing that will fit YOU and YOUR body... and hey, it will probably be at a quarter of the cost too!0 -
I can hardly fit into their larges sizes and I am a size 14, 38C. You can order bigger sizes online, but I'm always hesitant because I can't try them on and it's hassle to send **** back. Not to mention, I am not going through all that trouble if their products are $50!!!0
-
I LOVE their lift bras. I can not find anything comparable elsewhere. You are correct, they are not true sizing. I measured at a D, and I am not a D. In my picture I am wearing the VS FABULOUS bra, and it IS FABULOUS.0
-
I know right? Frederick's of Hollywood has my size. Too bad it's like 2 hours away.
Fredricks has my size also, but I can only order online0 -
I find both campaigns obnoxious.
I'm just gonna stop wearing bras.. They're perky without it...eff it. lol
I will say, in regards to the above post....most "specialty" stores do carry plus sizes...so I find that's what annoys me about VS..they only sell a few things online. And I agree..TORRID is an excellent plus size store with more hip and up to date style of wardrobe...plus they sell cute cheap shoes and sexy stuff. Woot.
Either way...I haven't shopped there since HS...there isn't anything there I can't find elsewhere...and I have no desire to where "PINK" across myself. So yeah...off to Macy's0 -
And this one is meant for the OP: This is the second time (that I am aware of) that you started an entire thread to complain about VS. Seriously, get over it already!0

Thread full of women upset that their exact body type isn't represented in every single commercial
No, it's just that my body type isn't really represented anywhere. It would be nice to see a positive image of plus sized women on TV for a change but they get taken down quickly because they aren't sexy enough. We're constantly being told that thin women are the only attractive women and frankly, I'm sick of it. Nothing against thin women, I just want to see the media acknowledge plus sized women as something other than comic relief. We are beautiful too!I love VS! Their bras and panties are the only thing that I wear. I wouldn't stop shopping there just because they use thin models just like every other clothing store.
The only time I was bitter about it was when I was borderline overweight. Because I was insecure with myself I hated marketing. Now I really don't care at all.
I love how everyone assumes that just because I'm not okay with their marketing that I'm jealous. I'm not jealous. I like the size of my breasts just fine. I just don't like their marketing. If you are only going to promote thin women, don't go with the "love your body" campaign, as it's a slight against every other woman who isn't that body type and can't fit into their stuff, either for being too small or too large. Why do we think that retailers should have to tailor to us at every size? VS obviously found that they are more profitable if they only produce a certain range of sizes. It isn't a personal insult, it's just business. Don't tie your self-satisfaction to a marketing ploy.
I don't understand that. There are more plus sized women in this country than there used to be, so why wouldn't they want us to shop there? More customers = more money. I don't see the disconnect here.0 -
I haven't seen the commercial being discussed because I rarely watch television at all (which in itself is good for the self-image!). I used to wear their bras in high school in college (38DD), but stopped shopping there when I entered the real world and had to support myself. I've never had problems finding my size (I've always ranged from size 12-16), but don't buy much there because of the extreme cost; I get the same bras at the Bally outlet store for 1/3 the price and they last the same amount of time.
However, I find it interesting that VS apparently isn't selling their larger sizes in the stores. For some reason the catalog comes to my house and they list size up to 16, which is about what any average store (meaning non plus sized) carries. Do they really fit that small? I haven't purchased clothes from there, but have considered it occasionally.0 -

Ding ding ding, we have a winner!
If a shop doesn't 'represent' you it's not because they are targeting you and being mean to you *boo hoo* it's based on a business decision. Perhaps VS want to maintain their image of being at the elite end of lingerie. Perhaps it is worth more to them to keep that image than to make their stock available for everyone.
To be honest - I think that Dove advert is just as bad, just in the other direction, suggesting that unless you are overweight you aren't a 'real woman'.0 -
The last time I shopped in a Bricks & Mortar store I was thoroughly DISGUSTED by the photos on the walls.... The so-called "women" looked like child porn stars who hadn't even reached puberty yet but with HUGE BOOBS grafted on to their tiny bodies! UGH UGH UGH! The ONLY reason I still shop there is because they make a thong that I really like. Otherwise - no thank you!0

Plus size women certainly can be beautiful. But I don't think we should be glorifying something that is unhealthy like that. Not a fan of fat acceptance.0 -

It's been a while since I started the other one though and I considered not starting this one because of it but I just wanted to get my opinion out there since it was about the ad more than the store. So am I not allowed to speak my mind just because I mentioned it before? Where is that in the MFP rules? You don't have to read this thread if you don't want to, I'm not forcing people to read it. Ugh.0 -

This. Not every store is for every person.
I'm big and I fit into their stuff. Maybe you just have to know where to look? I don't know.0 -
VS stuff is lame anyway. I tried on 30 bras one day and ended up coming out of the dressing room and saying to the plastic sales girl CAN YOU NOT find ANY bras withOUT padding??? 38 Ds dont need armor and padding WTF. I dont mind some lift but I dont want them right under my chin. Panties need an *kitten*- not a string.
You want sexy and well fitted- move on to Fredericks of Hollywood. VS is strange crap- not made for every day- just posing and taking off.0 -
I think the VS one looks weird, and this is coming from a thin girl, it looks weirdly elongated...but the issue I have with the Dove one that it is supposed to represent more realistic women, but why does it not represent one naturally thin girl?
If I had to pick one to relate to more, then I would go the VS one, even though I don't have any curves and their undies fall right off my *kitten*!0 -

For the same reason Bentley don't make a £10,000 cheap runaround type car. Maintaining the brand. It makes sense to target 25% of the population but be able to charge 10 times the price.0 -
Wow, they're getting that bad are they? I've just been mad that I can't get cute bras in my size. If it isn't a C cup or smaller, it is nude, black or white. I found cute ones online that I ordered in my size and my boobs are hanging out of the cups and I had to lose 2 inches to fit the band that they measured me out to fit into.
Problem is, I have yet to find a place to shop for bras and haven't been fitted in ages...
cute/ what's a cute bra? My mom had me in a minimizer when I was 14 years old!!! my daughter has cute bras because she can...
and I just can't! BTW- I have no idea WTF my real size is. One boob is bigger than the other!
I think everyone's is. One side of the body is always bigger than the other side not sure why0 -
Try Cacique! I love their bras! They are comfy and made for large chested women and they have some cute bras, panties and lingerie as well!Wow, they're getting that bad are they? Yes because all fat people are unhealthy. I work in a warehouse on my feet 40-50 hours a week, go to the gym three times a week on top of that, and eat lean meats, fruits and veggies. Nope, I must be eating nothing but cake and ice cream all the time just because I'm fat.0 -
Same, I like those women because they have feminine bodies that are also athletic looking. "Curvy" shouldn't be synonymous with "fat"
Agreed, it seems the two get smudged up a lot recently.
VS doesn't bother me. I like looking at their models just as much as anyone else does. Do they make me feel insecure? No. I'm 5'2 and will in no way, shape, or form ever look like a 6' tall model with a 3 mile long torso. I like their undies but I think they're overpriced outside of their 5/$26 panties. ha.0 -
Companies and industries don't use thin models because they want to make women feel bad about themselves, they do it because it's good business:
1. A tall, thin person will almost always better show off clothing than another body type-- you're meant to notice the clothes, not the model. The model is nothing more than a hanger as far as the business is concerned.
2. It's cheaper to make clothing for thinner people since it takes less fabric and work-- that's why they started using skinny models in the first place. Of course a business will choose to cut costs and maximize profit where possible, that's the point of a business.
Also, the Victoria Secret ladies really aren't all terribly photo-shopped. Yes, they really do have crazy good bodies and fantastic skin. Just go look at those non-retouched photos.

Feel free to speak your mind but honestly you need to learn to separate marketing from self worth if this gets to you so bad. And I am just as entitled to speak my mind as you are.0
