    Good morning everyone.

    Skyscraper Day
Date When Celebrated : September 3 rd
Skyscraper Day is a day to appreciate and admire the world's tallest skyscrapers.
Skyscrapers are truly engineering and architectural marvels. In many crowded cities, space is in short supply, and real estate prices are ever increasing. Building "up" becomes more and more logical. As technical capabilities in construction improved, skyscraper buildings have become taller and taller. In addition, there is a certain prestige to have one of the tallest buildings in the world in your city and country.
A Tall Debate: There is some disagreement over how to measure the height of skyscrapers. At issue, is whether to measure the height of flagpoles and antenna atop most tall buildings.
Have a very happy Skyscraper Day.

It seems like the drama never ends at my house. I found out yesterday that I have glaucoma. I shouldn't be surprised as it is in my family line, but not happy about it. I know that it is less than a year old because I didn't have it last year when I saw the dr. There doesn't seem to be any significant loss of vision at this point. I will have field of vision tests next week. If I take my eye drops, it is very controllable, although I don't think that it can be eliminated.
Oh, well, Onward and downward. Kaye

I'm sorry for the diagnosis Kaye, but use the eye drops faithfully and its manageable. My grandmother had it and my dad was diagnosed with glaucoma a few years ago--he's used his eye drops as directed and there hasn't been any change in his vision so far. Just be careful with medications, as it can alter the effectiveness of the eye drops--one I know of is Flonase, an allergy nasal spray.

Thanks, Kelley. DH uses Flonase, but I don't need it, so that's not a problem. My grandmother lost her eyesight in her early 60s from glaucoma. I cared for her a lot so I'm well aware of what blindness is like. It has always been a fear of mine. My aunt lived with the diagnosis for many years with no problems. The drops worked great for her. I am very hopeful, no panic. Kaye

    Hi all

I been struggling this week with my eating. A bit too stressed. My fur baby Bella has a mass in her ear. Vet was going to remove it but once he got in there it was too big and went deep in her ear canal to remove. So now we're looking for a specialist that can help her. My Vet is very picky so we have went through several without a winner. He's now looking out of our area. Fingers crossed to find the best choice for her and that it is not cancer.

And next week were vacationing in Vancouver. I'm excited but dang it I gotta start packing. I'm worried about my back. I'm disabled with a back injury. I have good days and bad days. But too much walking and it hurts a lot. So I'm hoping for it to stay tolerable for a good trip. My hubs deserves that.

@kah68. I have read up about whole30 too and find it very interesting. Keep us posted how you do and good luck. In my exploring the subject most folks do the 30 days then try to keep at about 80%. They dubbed it 80/20 whole 30. So it's not 100% strict but still benefiting. I'm a diabetic and suspect the 80/20 would help me too.

    Hi everyone!

@laurie-- I hope everything goes well with your dad's transition home today.

@kaye-- so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad it is so manageable.

@kelley-- keep us posted if you decide to try the elimination diet. I had a friend at work who did that and found she had a bunch of sensitivities. I'm too afraid of what I might find, so prefer to live in ignorant bliss. ;)

@tom-- hooray for skyscrapers! As a Chicagoan, I grew up with a strong affinity for skyscrapers. When I was a kid, my dad worked for the city's Department of Environmental Services so he had access to air quality equipment located on levels of some buildings that weren't accessible to the public. I've been to the roof of the Sears Tower which is 6 floors higher than the observation deck on the 103rd floor.

AFM-- Well, my sinus congestion has turned into a full-blown summer cold. :( At least I have a 3-day weekend coming up to try to rest and shake it off.

    Thursday Truth ...

I have a new profile on MFP. The original one is almost 7 years old and the food diary was a pill to find my foods. I haven't deleted the old one yet because there are that many years worth of recipes I built on MFP for the nutritional values and don't want to lose that until I get some of them transferred over.

I'm giving this new profile 1 year ... and if I have not made strong headway's by the end of it then I will consider surgical means to getting this extra weight off my bones. That's a last resort and definitely not one I want to even think about beyond being a cautionary threat to myself.

As for this thread ... it's good to see some new names one here ... new 'blood' is always a good thing in any family ...

speaking of family ... did anyone else read the article about King Tut .. that his parents were siblings? The original article came out in October 2014 but it just this week made the rounds to my social media news feed ... poor man had one masculine and one feminie hip, a club foot, large breasts, a bad overbite, and possibly a form of epilepsy ; sad. He became king at the age of 10 and died at 19. So much for 'pure blood'

So, I didn't go off on a tangent just there ... it occurred to me that new posters on this thread will help make this thread healthier for the future.

Oh yes, another Thursday Truth ... I've gone off a med I've taken for the past 12 years. It was an SSRI ... I told the doctor that I wanted to give my emotions a try without it, and since the dose I was taking was the lowest available he agreed that it was a good idea ... because of some side effects. Well ... one thing I've noticed right away ... I'm more outspoken, more apt to ramble on, less concerned with how I affect others. ... I'm just more ornary. So if I need to be told to back off ... please tell me.

Well had a little bit of drama in my life for the day. My son was outside playing fetch with our dog zues when something went wrong. He somehow got the stick impaled into his mouth. We had to rush him to the vet were they had to sedate him to remove it. It went in at the left hand back corner of his gum and down the side of his throat. There was almost 4 inches of stick stuck in there. By some miracle it managed to miss anything that would have caused major complications and he should be fine. They have him on cautionary antibiotics and an anti inflammatory so there is no swelling in the throat area. He is now up and active and eating so chalk it up to an expensive close call.
@kaye I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Thankfully it is a condition that is controllable most of the time now.
@laurie I hope you are able to get some rest this weekend and don't end up sick.
@Karen hope you are feeling better by the end of the weekend.

Well about time for me to go to bed. Have a great night everyone :)

    Good Morning & Happy Friday!

@Nikion901~I thought you had changed your profile name, I can understand your need to start over, though. There was a time many years ago that I researched and contemplated lapband surgery, it came down to not wanting to live the rest of my life with something foreign in my body that could affect my health. The same came true for other forms of WLS, I knew people that had major complications, most of which just replaced a food addiction with an addiction to alcohol or drugs. I also knew a handful of people that lost their lives from complications. :frowning: So for me, it was never the answer—I decided at that moment to give Weight Watchers one last try and go in all or nothing. It was like a switch and I finally succeeded. I’m not 100% all of the time (no one is), truthfully I should have reached my ultimate goal years ago but I’ve told myself that it takes as long as it takes, as long as I’m not going backwards I’m still moving forward, I’m healthier and happier then when I started this journey. You can do this, just make small changes at a time—set a small goal and reward yourself (non-food reward) when you reach that goal, then set another goal. If you haven’t read Women, Food and God I highly recommend it—very eye-opening. I’ve also found reading other books on weight loss helps to get you into that mindset, from the Biggest Loser books to a couple I’ve read by Chris Powell (Extreme Weight Loss) and now It Starts with Food (this one has several very "science-y" chapters that I have found very interesting (but then I like that kind of stuff). They just help you understand how the body works and help to put things into perspective if you feel overwhelmed or lost by this process. Lastly, if you feel like you need a bit more support than the online community see if there is a Tops meeting near you—they are very inexpensive (around $30/year I think). A friend of mine in CA attends them and has had tremendous success. Sorry for rambling and not to talk you out of anything, just some ideas that will hopefully help you find your path.

@Tammy~OMG, I would have freaked out! Poor Zeus, I’m so glad he won’t have any permanent damage.

@Karen~LOL, I’m almost afraid to find out what else I could be sensitive to as well. I hope you are able to rest this weekend and kick that summer cold to the curb!

So, shortly after I returned from vacation they were having a photo contest at work. I submitted a few photos I took in Alaska both this time and when I went in 2012—my 2012 photo of Emerald Lake in the Yukon Territory won. We rented a Jeep and drove an hour from Skagway, AK to the Yukon—they are going to enlarge, frame and hang this in our main suite (also framing me a copy for my house). Here is the winning pic:

    Good morning everyone.

    Happy National Wildlife Day
It's National Wildlife Day! Today is a celebration of all the amazing creatures in nature. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the many endangered species in this country and around the world.
Do you have a zoo or animal sanctuary in your area? It's quite possible that people in your community are already working hard to preserve animal life and educate the public about conservation.
National Wildlife Day is a great day to visit your local zoo, adopt a pet, donate to your favorite animal shelter, or volunteer to help in any way you can. Help make a difference!

@kah68 ~ Stunning photo! I just got a fancy new digital camera for my birthday (another lens on the way) and look forward to taking beautiful photos. I hope I can do half as good of job as you.
AFM: It has been a raggedy re-start. Partly due to not having the ideal food in the house just yet. I am enjoying catching up with all of you and hearing how it is going though.

@kah68 - for all the reasons you mentioned, I do not want to have any gastric surgical procedures; I just get so fed up and find fault with myself that I have not been able to, in all these years, attain the goal. It's a mindset that has come about from past misses and near-misses. I spend so much time reading, thinking, and talking about weight loss that some of my friends think I am a broken record or have OCD about it! :) I love the photo you posted.

@skinnyjeanzbound - Summer went by very fast, didn't it. You and all the other teachers are back in the thick of it all in what seems to be a blink of an eye.

    AFM ..
Saturday Success ... I've been hitting my macros and calorie limits this week.

Just made between 7 and 8 pounds of baked bean salad for the cookout we are going to later this weekend. It is a family favorite. I will have to remember to not eat much and hopefully not bring much home. It is quite rich and very full of carbs.
Holiday weekends sure complicate the calorie counting!

    @mountmary84 -- wow, that's a lot of baked beans!

@niki-- yes, it seems the older I get, the faster summer flies by.

@kelley-- that photo is gorgeous!!! I'm a terrible photographer. Even after years of advising yearbook and taking all kinds of photo workshops, I still can't take great pictures. I even brought home our $3000 professional camera from school one summer to get it cleaned at Wolf Camera, and I tried taking some good pics of gunner, but they all turned out blurry and horrible. Guess that's just not my talent.

@tammy-- how scary that happened with zues!! Thank goodness it turned out as it did. When gunner was a pup, he was running with a stick and ended up with a big shard of wood in his inner thigh. Fortunately, he let me remove it without too much of a struggle and he was no more worse for wear.

    Saturday Success:
Well I made it through another week of no logging without doing any damage on the scale. I know it's because I'm still eating all the same foods I typically log, I'm just being lazy about logging it. Still battling this sinus thing, but at least it's not getting any worse. <knocks on wood> It sure did make for a long week.

Today I spent the morning running errands. I needed a new hair dryer and Ulta had a 20% off coupon good through today, so I took advantage of that. I also had to return some stuff to Soma that I had bought online. I bought the right size and cut, but wrong style of underwear. Luckily, the store had what I wanted in stock, so it was an easy exchange.

Spent afternoon grading and only have 28 stories left. I will probably prep for my speech class this evening and finish up the papers Monday.

Tomorrow I have to go to a friend's 40th b-day party, so that should be fun.

    Grading Goals:
    1. 31/59 F451 stories
    2. Prep for Speech class

    Exercise Goals:
    Sunday-- walk gunner DONE
    Monday-- rest day
Tuesday-- walk gunner NOT DONE + gym NOT DONE
    Wednesday-- walk gunner DONE
    Thursday-- walk gunner NOT DONE
    Friday-- rest day

Sunday Share ... Hello everyone and welcome to anyone and everyone who is new or returning to this thread.
I found this thread almost a year ago ... my first post was on 1 Oct 2014, shortly after i started communicating on some of the other threads on MFP Community Pages. I had been reading different articles and blogs since August 2013 and finally felt ready to 'share' with others what was going on in my weight-loss journey. We had just started a member Challege for the moth of October and I wanted to join in ... hoping that participating in a challenge would spur me on in my struggle.

That month it was to record our food so that we could track our calories ... a lesson in realizing that everything we ate, no matter how little or large, how 'good' or 'bad' had consecquences nutritionally and calorically. It was an eye opening month for me ... even though I had been working on my nutrition for a number of years and thought I had it figured out about portions, servings, and such.

Another thing I read at that time was the post about "Will and Will Not Do ... and Will Try Later" list. I've read along the way that a lot of us do or did that kind of a list when we set off. My own list was along the lines of ... typical stuff most people promist themselves when they are trying to trim up or firm up.
Less restaurant prepared food and more home cooked meals
Less sitting around time and more moving around time

I unhappy to report that I did lose weight during this past 11 months ... but I have also gained most of it back and am pretty much where I was last year at this time ... Happily, I can count that as a success because
I'm not heavier than I was a year ago
I've learned a lot that I am applying because one I thing I did learn is that it takes time to make a new 'habit' take root.

So ... for all those that are struggling, please don't give up the 'fight' ... take it slowly and steadily and work on one thing at a time ...

    Hi Everyone,

I am back again. My dad transition to home was not smooth as I had hoped. He came home on Thursday and 911 was called twice- once for a lift assist to get back into his wheel chair which he was falling out of. The second was that night because he could not stand up to get into bed. Friday, he woke up with his feet hurting and by that evening we were calling 911 again this time it was to the hospital. He is back in the hospital but luckily there does not appear to be any infections just a lot of fluid build up which has been impeding his ability to walk. They are keeping him in the hospital until they can get him stable. He will not be returning to rehab at this time since he has multiple blisters on his backside. Luckily, my mom has agreed to have help come in so she can keep dad at home. This will be a new reality for me and one that I will need to make time for myself and not let the stress get the best of me.

This weekend, I managed to go rock climbing and bike riding twice this weekend. I am not sure what I will do tomorrow but it is to nice to stay outside to get some exercise.

Tammy- Sorry to hear about Zeus, hope he is doing better.
Karen- Hope you avoided the cold or were able to get rid of it this weekend. Have you tried a nasal rinse to help clear the nasal passages? I did that a couple of times and it helped to relieve the pressure. I still has a little issue but it never became a full blown infection. The joys of being back in school.
Kelley- The picture is beautiful and congrats on winning.
Niki- I think we all go through times of self doubt during this process. It is always a learning experience along with a self discovery. It does take time for new habits to stick and become a reality. The best advice I can give is to start with changing one thing and make that a habit before moving onto the next item.

My challenge this week has been a desire for milkshakes. I need to stop going to a new deli near Kinder Park whenever I go bike riding or am at the park. The problem is I am lacking the will power to say no the milkshakes. Today, I did fine with lunch at the deli- a friend was with me so no milkshake. However, we went bike shopping today. He is looking for a bike so I took him to my favorite bike shop. I brought shoes and he is dreaming about an electric bike. When he dropped me off at the deli, I ended up with a milkshake. The reason was simple, I wanted the sugar but at least the milkshake had some protein in hit. However, I know that this bad habit must stop. I can not live on milkshakes. The only good thing is I earned the milkshake today by bike riding this morning. Went farther than yesterday in the same amount of time so that was a positive. They need to stop becoming a go to food for comfort.

My weight dropped to 190.6 yesterday but was back up today. I am hoping that my weight goes back down tomorrow.

    Have a great labor day.

    Monday Check-in ... didn't check in today. ... cause ...
Ever here that song that had the words in it 'Didn't sleep a wink at all last night" ... that was me. So today I am totally upside down and don't have much willpwer over anything ... good thing there is no chocolate or baked good in this house. I do have some fruit on hand and one of them is my favorite ... big firm prune plums ... I think this variety must be Stanley. My folks had them in my dad's fruit orchard when I was young and we ate tons of them. Unfortunately that variety got a virus in this area and most of those trees died out. They were replaced with another variety that is much smaller, the pit doesn't remove as easily, and are sweeter and mealier. Maybe the Stanley's are coming back! Anyway ... any prune plum is higher in sugar that a regular round black plum for the same size ... and I have already had three of them in the past 18 hours ... and am craving another one as I write this.

So instead ... I will go make some chicken noodle casserole with some egg noodles I have in the pantry and chciken leg I picked up at the grocery on Saturday. And while that is cooking ... I will prep all that fruit and put it into the freezer.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day celebrations today. Around here, all the kids will be back to school by Wednesday ... and that coincides with an expected break to normal temperatures from the high heat and humidy we have been having recently. Summer's last Hurrah!

@Lauriek70 ... keeping your family in my positive thoughts and meditaions as you go through this difficult time of a parent's failing health.

@niki-- I hope you get a good night's sleep tonight so you can get rightside up.

@laurie-- so sorry to hear about your father's continued struggles. I can't imagine the stress it must be causing you and your family. Happy to hear your mom agreed to some help with him once he's back at home.

    Monday Check-in:
Well, I have reached the point where I know I need to get back to logging and back to the gym. Between school starting and this cold, I've been very lax in both areas. The cold is almost gone, so it's time for me to grab the reigns of the wagon; I've been hanging off the edge for too long.

In that spirit, I've decided to post a September challenge: (for the remaining 23 days at least)
    1. log every BLT 20/23 days
    2. gym or run 5 times
    3. core work 3x/week (crunches, planks, push ups, squats)

I'm pretty sure my shoulder is healed enough to do push ups. If I find it's aggravating, I will choose a different exercise.

I would have made it more challenging, but I have my godson's wedding this weekend, so didn't want to set myself up for failure from the start.

    Grading Goals:
    4. 59/59 F451 stories DONE
    5. Prep for Speech class DONE

    Exercise Goals:
    Sunday-- walk gunner DONE
    Monday-- walk gunner DONE
    Tuesday-- walk gunner + core
Wednesday-- walk gunner + gym (including core)
Thursday-- rest day (open house at school)
    Friday-- core (wedding rehearsal)
    Saturday-- rest day (wedding)
