    Hello

Just dropping in to say Hello. It has been a really busy weekend so far, Been on to enter calories. The workshop I am involved in is over tomorrow been such a full day lots to learn. Its about adiction and one of the groups is for food addiction. Really learn a lot took lots of notes when I get home planning on going over my notes and seeing what I can apply to my life. Yesterday was sort of hard because I was helping out at the registration table all day was there very early ate breakfast pack my almonds and water for a snack plan on going out for dinner. There was a mistake with my order for dinner and being so hungry it made me emotional . But when I was getting ready for bed did my Grateful lists it help so much.

Today i made a point of using the stairs at every chance that I could very encourage I could do it more than one time.

I will be back later to reply to all I am just so tired.

    Thank you,
    Liz

Hi everyone. I am happy to hear so many of you are doing so well. My saturday success is that I exercised every day this week. Not a lot I know but a first for me. I also bought one of those big bouncy balls to replace my desk chair for a while and a pedometer. I have been fiddling with the pedometer all day but must be doing something wrong as it doesn't seem to be recording things right. I dont know but I will continue to try and figure it out. In the meantime I am having fun with the bouncy ball like a big ole kid. With my sleep schedule being screwed all week I have been way under calories most days until today:ohwell: I might have gone insane and had a 10 oz steak and huge aked potatoe with butter AND sour cream and possibly pumpkin pie for desert:noway: I know, OMG so thank god I had the huge calorie deficit built up and even with all that I only went over about 400 but still can't be doing that agian for awhile, though I am not going to lie and say I didn't enjoy every bite:bigsmile: Well have a good night everyone and whatever you do dont follow my example today, lol.

    Good Morning.

I would like to say that I got an extra hour of sleep last night, but Pebbles clock didn't exactly fall back - she woke me at 4:30 instead of 5:30. Joy!

Missed yesterday, I don't know how!? :noway: Went for a 3-mile run/walk in the morning, car detailed in the afternoon, and grocery shopping. I'm not sure what took up my time after that.

Friday was our last day to early vote and I remembered about 15 minutes before the polls closed  - hope I can find a lull in the day on Tuesday so I don't have to wait in line for hours.

Saturday Success~I was down another 1.4# on the scale so I am less than 2# away from that century mark. I have a massage scheduled for Friday afternoon so really hope I hit that mark on the scale Friday morning next week.

Sunday Share~I'm Kelley, 43 (until Tuesday), and live in north central Texas (a transplant from NY 16 years ago). I didn't gain weight until I was in my 20s, I went through some difficult things and subconsciously started putting on weight as a way to put up some barriers. I woke up one day and was surprised at the amount I had gained, not to mention the years of self-destruction I had endured. I tried losing weight off and on over the years, but didn't want it bad enough - I finally made a real commitment to it several years ago. I lost the bulk of my weight on Weight Watchers, but when they changed to their most recent points system it quit working. After about 6 months of losing and gaining the same 5# I switched over to MFP and have been much more successful. I'm back to being as active as I was in high school (maybe even more so) and feel great. I still have a way to go, but through the support of my trainers (and the friends I've made here) I know I'll get there!

Christine~So glad you enjoyed WOF, I have always wanted to go - always seems to fall on a weekend I can't make it. I hope to go next year.

Time for more coffee and to get the laundry started (something else I neglected to do yesterday). Gym for a session with my trainer this afternoon.

    Have a great day!

@Susan -- thanks for the encouragement.
@Sherrie -- I do not think I could possibly run at 5am. 12 miles is wonderful! I'm hoping to do a half marathon in March, but my longest run so far is still less than 3 miles. I think that it was skinnyjeanz who started writing out exercise plans -- I think it's a brilliant idea too; keeps you focused and helps you plan. Like meal plans except for your tush. My solution to grocery shopping when hungry is to do it online so that I do not have to go into stores.
@Robin -- thanks again for all you do to inspire us, and for your sunny outlook!
@Kelley -- how exciting to be coming up to that magic 100 pounds lost! I'm just a *bit* jealous.

So my sort of success this week is that I've been doing an online course, Berkley's CS169.1x, on creating web apps, that has completely kicked my behind. But it's pass/fail, and you get a certificate if you're over 50%. I have until Tuesday to finish the last assignments, but I'm already at (drum roll) 51%! So I've signed up for the second part of the course, and I'm going to rewatch everything and try to get the hang of it before that starts.

Measurements! My neck, bust, and hips are all the same, but my waist is 2 inches smaller. Is that even possible? I'm going to do this again next month and see how it goes.

Sunday share -- for anyone who doesn't know... I'm 47 and live in East London, in a sort of grotty terraced house quite close to a tube station. I don't work at the moment because I took redundancy from a senior management job and I haven't decided what I want to do next (other than 'not senior management in a large public sector office'). I'm married (to a brilliant bloke who is also here on MFP, but will soon hit his weight target I think cos he didn't have that much to lose), and I have two kids, a girl aged 15 who's in exam year at school and finding it all tough, and a boy aged 12. I've tried to lose weight before but I'm really positive about it this time, partly because MFP makes it so easy and partly because I'm really keeping up with exercise.

    Cheers everyone!

CathEsh - glad to hear you're not too bothered by the knee brace - can you take it off for bits of time to let your leg "air out" ?

Karen - what colors are the bedrooms and baseboards?

Susan - even on a plateau it sounds as if your losing inches -way to go!

SherrilsB - I love your early morning running enthusiasm - you will continue to get better at your OWN pace - :drinker:

MowMow - I have a wheeled pull cart that I take grocery shopping. It collapses to stow in a closet. I found it at KMART for $25 and its a lifesaver in my condo bldg. I walk a long way from my parking lot to my condo apt. It holds 2 gal of milk and about 3-4 more bags of groceries and is very easy to pull and push.

Monarchris - great singing takes me to bliss, worshipful singing takes me to heaven. :flowerforyou:

mackbeth - great success on inches lost! WOOT :flowerforyou: AND WEIGHT!:drinker:

Laurie - I hope you enjoy Portland. Hope the weather is cooperative and you try something new!

skinny - yes! We are capable of doing better! Lets kick it up a notch! I'm going to walk the halls today with a pedometer on.

Liz - sounds like your food addiction workshsops wer interesting - glad you made up your mind to take the stairs - thats a great effort - atta girl!

jt = that is so impressive that you exercised every day this week! WOW! How do you feel? Are you just enamored with yourself? I would be! And have fun with your bouncy ball a little bit every day at work - that should be a real fun work out too!

Kah - thanks for your share. I felt like I was having a cup of coffee with you!

Boho Coast - very interesting career path you're choosing - wishing you the best luck with your classes now and in the future and with all the best for the job prospects when you are ready.

My share: I am a 61 y/o divorced (so happily) living in a condo which is really converted apartment building with a year round pool in the lower level. Lucky me! I am retired on disability because I have tons of health problems and seem to keep inheriting more as the years pass  ! I have a great male friend whom I divvy up my week with, spending a few days a week at his place, and the rest at mine, by myself. The inherent flaw to my diet is we drink and eat pizzas and go out to dinner and breakfast when we are together, and its very hard to log calories. I try though, I try.

I am looking forward to going to Portland and like Robin said 'I want to try something new." I am thinking about taking a bike tour around the city. I want to see what other fun things the city has to offer.

I am 42 yrs. old and rediscovered life at 40. I have lost 67 pounds but have been maintaining for the past year. I am trying to focus on losing again but I will start fresh when I return from my trip.

    Goals for this week:
    1. Log in every day this week. I will be switching my time frame to West coast time.
    2. Make healthy choices in my eating while still enjoying the food.
    3. Exercise a little everyday and that includes walking to the convention center.
    4. To maintain my weight this week.

Wish- That I hear from my cousin Johnnie who lives in Portland so I can visit with him, while I am out there.
Wish that I can get my 7th grade test scanned and recorded before I leave for Portland and finish my grades.

@RobinsEgg - thanks always for keeping this thread going ... it's really a lifesaver at times.
@Alison - A true 'east ender', eh? I lived in England for two years (near Bury St.Edmond's), and there are loads of things I miss (sadly, decent sausages would be part of it - as well as steak & kidney pie). Still have family in the UK, so I could be a bit jealous :flowerforyou:
@jtconst - bouncy ball? like a stability ball? My husband bought me one of those things, and the first thing it did was buck me off! Starting to get the hang of situps with the thing (without getting ejected!)
@Susan2396 - you're actually near a friend of mine in Henderson - watch out, I hear there's a candy factory (chocolate) nearby...
@Toots - happy belated birthday, doll! :flowerforyou:

Sunday share - well, I was out doing a little retail therapy (at thrift store) and came across two books that look pretty interesting (so I bought them). One was from the 'Biggest Loser" tv show, and has lots of tips & recipies & exercises. They had a recipie for green goddess dressing that I want to try. The other is called "Shrink Yourself" -- it's about breaking emotional eating. Started to read it already, and I'm hopeful (and scared too) - so going to see if I can learn something - and kick myself in the *kitten*.

    Have a great week!

Sunday Share - I'm a 42-year-old graduate student in Sociology. I have been working overnights at a group home, but recently put in my notice, because the combo of the hours and a complete lack of support and invisibility have taken a toll. Not entirely sure what I will do for paid labor after Thursday (my last day), but I am cautiously optimistic that something will soon work out (I had hoped it would be settled by now). I did arrange to stay on a per-diem basis, so if I'm wrong about the speed at which I can find work in this economy, I won't be completely broke (I hope). I have been overweight my entire life (well, since first grade, anyway), tipping the scales at 200 by my freshman year of high school (long before the "childhood obesity epidemic"). I have always been pretty active for someone my size, but slowly crept up to 350 pounds by the start of this summer, which as it turns out, was my breaking point. I lost about five pounds before a friend pointed me to MFP, and I've been logging every day since. I'm really hoping to say good-bye to the 300s before the end of the year (only six pounds to go)! Today, I went for a seven-mile hike with a friend (after raking leaves yesterday and this morning), and now every muscle in my body is screaming at me. I don't think my knee was quite ready for such an ambitious jaunt. We will see what my PT says tomorrow...

Hi, my name is Shirley Dawson. I'm retired and I'm new new to My Fitness Pal, I'm 58, with fibromylgia, degenerating discs in my low back, ostheoarthrisits there too and in my hips. I'm also diabetic. I also have a blood disorder "Essential Thrombocyemia" (which means my bone marrow produces too many platlets, making me a clotting risk. I had a stroke after my last surgery to repair a hermia with mesh. My Doc just told me last week, an ultrasound showed I had fatty liver and spleen. He, my diabetes doc wants me to read up on bariatric surgery and consider it. I have an appointment with a liver specialist after Thanksgiving. I go back to my diabetes doc in late January. Before I take a chance on another elective surgery with my risk for throwing a clot and having a stroke, I want to try hard to lose on my own before I meet with him again in late January.

I use a cane when walking short distances and a wheelchair for longer distances because of my back and hip pain. I have water aerobic classes 3 times a week which I can do because they dont hurt in the water. I can't stay on a treadmill for more than a minute or so. I can use the recumbent bike for up to around 40 minutes at around level 4 tension. I can do some weight training as long as its a sitting machine.

I'm on metformin and both short acting Novalog and long acting Lantus insulin for my diabetes which is not under great control. Infact this week of my diet I've plunged 3 nights and woke up to have to eat something.

I started on Oct 29th with a diet counting calories of just over 1300 a day. I'll weigh in for the first time after starting this tomorrow.

I thought this site might be encouraging. I have a couple of friends who have agreed to hold me accountable.

I have some questions of you who deal with pain daily. How do you encourage yourself to exercise when it hurts?

What do you do when you have used all your calories for the day and are still hungry?

Diabetics, I'm having trouble regulating my evening dose of insults, to keep from dropping too low during the night. Any advice?

@shirley--welcome to our group! :flowerforyou: You will find a lot of support here--I know we have members with some of the same health issues you are battling. I don't have fibro, so I don't deal with that type of pain, but I've had to work through some pain with plantar fascitis and a knee problem (torn meniscus). I would suggest you continue with the activities that cause you the least amount of pain until you build more strength and endurance. As far as running out of calories goes, when I first started MFP, I would log out my entire day in the morning which helped a lot. I'm also a "night owl" and tend to get hungry in the evenings, so I try to plan some calories for an evening snack. If I really blow it throughout the day, I will sometimes do some evening exercise to "earn back" calories if I'm still hungry. Hope these ideas help.

@lmack--hope you find a new permanent job quickly! Also, wishing you luck on your goal to move into "twoderville"--I know you can lose those six pounds if you stick to your plan!

@vickie--ooh--that Shrink Yourself boob sounds interesting! You'll have to report back to us on that.

Speaking of "shrinks" anyone heard from sara (shrinkrapt) lately?

@laurie--your goals while in Portland look great! Hope you get to see your cousin.

@robin--yay! great job walking the halls! I didn't get my walk in with gunner, but I spent the afternoon playing with my niece. Throwing a 21 lb baby up in the air and catching her over and over must burn some calories, right? I'm also going to do my core work tonight, which is about a 100 calorie burn--it's not cardio, but I need the strength training.

@alison--congrats on the 2 inch loss around your waist--and YES, it's totally possible! I found my waist would stay the same for months and then I would lose 2-3 inches all at once. It's just one of those areas that respond to particular exercises and/or nutrition plans (or doesn't :grumble: ). My younger sis lived in Manchester and then London, during and right after college. I went an visited her twice and absolutely fell in love with London. The tube is the most incredible transport system I've ever seen in any large city! I just loved how easy it was to get around.

@kelley--Oh you are so close to such a major milestone!!! You will get there before you know it!!

@jtconst--great job exercising every day--even if was just a little bit each day, it all adds up!

@liz--great job logging even through your very busy week!

@toots--there's actually "standing" in the exercise database. I've used it once or twice when at a show or something where I was standing for hours on end, but didn't want to log it as walking. I think I logged about half the time, just to be safe.

    This week:
    Sat--walk dog + gym DONE!
Sun--walk dog--no time to walk dog so will do core work instead
    Mon--long run
    Tues--walk dog + core
    Wed--walk dog + gym
    Thurs--rest day (parent/teacher conferences again)
    Fri--flying to New Orleans
Sat--lots of walking around French Quarter
    Sun--more walking--flying home in PM

    November Challenge:
    1. Keep carbs at 40% of total calories (2/30)
    2. Run/bike/climb/walk 50 miles (10/50)

@shirley - you've definitely found the best thread! I don't struggle with any of your particular health issues, but as skinnyjeanz says, some people here do, and they will surely give some advice. It does sound like you're off to a great start, doing a lot of exercise already! I'm wondering about your 1300-calorie diet -- I know I would be starving all the time if I tried to be that restrictive. I know everyone needs to do what works for them, and perhaps your doctor or myfitnesspal directed you to that number, but depending on what you weigh, you might be able to make steady progress while eating more. I have averaged about 2-pounds a week since late june, eating around 2000 calories -- sometimes I eat my exercise calories back, but more often, not -- without feeling deprived. If you do have to stick with the more restrictive diet, then I would suggest filling up on lots of low calorie, high fiber foods? I'm not really familiar with a diebetic diet, though, but if you can go with lots of fruits and veggies and lean proteins, and not so many carbs, that might help with the hunger. Other people probably have even better advice, having been at this longer....

Shirley - you're very welcome to our group. As one person with a lot of pain issues, I don't exercise much. Tonight I walked the halls of my building using a pedometer it came to a grand total of 3/10 mile. I will just build from there . I have lost almost 40 lbs without much exercise and am just adding it in now.

I can't give you insulin or diabetic advice but I can echo Skinnyjeans' advice to save calories - dense protein calories such as Chocolate dusted almonds - for late evening snacks - I hope something like that might help you.

Shirley - Welcome! We have a few members here with serious pain issues. Hopefully they can give you some ideas.

I can't help with your insulin questions, I'm sorry. I was able to control mine with metformin until my numbers were controlled by diet and weight loss. I never had to do insulin...

Day 7 with no electric or heat or gas, due to Sandy. My poor 17 year old son had 4 slices of pizza today at work, he didn't know if we were going to eat tonight. I had to turn my head away from him so he would not see me cry. I can't wait until things get better, we are all eating what we can when we can. We got FEMA meals today. I hope to be back soon my friends.

    Thanks all for the welcome.

Skinnyjeans, I'm a night owl also and typically have trouble falling asleep before 3am. Some of that is due to my restless leg symdrone and some of my meds too.

Imackbeth, I got the 1350/day calorie goal from this site by putting in my weight of 280 and my goal weight of 150 at 2 lbs per week and that was the calorie limit the calculator gave me.

I've tried various ways to lose weight food wise, but have never been successful since my diabetes diagnosis. But now, with the liver problems they say I now have, I've decided that "do or die" may literally be my two choices. I really would rather not chance another surgery (bariatric as my doc has suggested) and the potenial for clotting and stroke or heart attack. So I'm going to work really hard at seeing if I can actually lose weight by myself before the end of January when I see the doc again and I know he will be wanting to talk surgery.

I'll be talking to a liver specialist for the first time on 11/26/12. I hope to have some weight loss by then to encourage me that I can continue losing on my own. I've been told that weight loss will help my fatty liver and my diabetes. I've been eating more veggies also both cooked and raw.

    Welcome Shirley!

First off - 2lbs a week at the very first is going to be too stringent for you - you might actually lose that kind of weight at first (due to losing water weight, mostly), but you're going to seriously jack yourself up if you're already having trouble regulating your blood sugar.

That being said, try for 4-5 smaller, well balanced meals durring the day. You may also want to try Mangosteen supplements (go with the capsules rather than a juice). Mangosteen helps regulate blood glucose, and it is WONDERFUL for chronic pain issues. Protein is your friend, carbs are not. Breads & whole wheat spike blood sugar.

I totally understand what you're going through. I lived in Miami during Hurricane Andrew. We had to go to Ft. Lauderdale to get water. i would get so mad to see these people living as if nothing happened. We went weeks without our utilities. The day after the storm when we need the fridge was defrosting we used our gas grill and cooked everything we could. We then put it all on ice. We would use a gas grill to reheat everything else. We had to go miles away just to find a pay phone since none of our cell phones could charge. It was truly something I never want to experience again. I'm so sorry this is happening to all of you. My thoughts and prayers could out to all of you during this difficult time.
