I actually really enjoyed the first two Paranormal Activity films, and I don't like the average horror movie. Haven't worked up the courage to see the third yet!
I think some of the scariest scenes in them happen in the middle of the day in broad daylight. The house also looks like your average American planned community house and not some stereotypical haunted mansion or something. Those elements together made me terrified to sleep in my own apartment for two weeks after. It will definitely "mess you up" in the head.0 -
paranormal activity (1,2,3) though one is the best.0

House of 1000 Corpses
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Event Horizon (more action than horror but it's still good)
28 Days Later
The Fly
Videodrome
That's just a few to get you started lol - i've only looked at one shelf hahaha0 -
Paranormal activity scared the crap out of me!0

seen a few films that combine mild horror with humour such as Shawn of the Dead and Severance, not quite your genre but still work really well.

Audition
The Strangers
Bereavement
Dogtooth (not a horror movie in the least but wonderfully twisted in a weird kind of way)0 -
Black Swan, The Machinist, Memento, Seven, Frailty, and of course Psycho.
Seven and Memento are two of my favorites.
These are good and Frailty is good too.... Memento is one of my favorites too!
I second all these. I loved Frailty too. Own it. And Momento is great!0 -
Session 9 was surprisingly a really good film. It was a little cheesy, seeing as it is a low budget film, but it's definitely worth watching.0

If you can find them: The Uninvited with Ray Milland and Gail Russell, The Legacy with Katherine Ross, The Mephisto Waltz with Alan Alda. Old movies.0

I see some people have already mentioned Strangers, but seriously...I watched it once and NEVER, EVER do i plan on watching it a second time. I think I'll stick to the ones that probably won't happen in real life from now on!0

Case 39 was definitely creepy0 -
Battle Royale series. Pretty gorey, but still excellent and psychologically intriguing if you don't mind subtitles (Japanese).0
