Lucky for me, I hate beer... always have, always will. So, when the doctor said "no more beer" I said "no problem!"

Now margaritas, martini's and wine... that's a different story! And my personal favorite drink ever... coffee brandy with milk

Omg, I am an idiot. Got sleep deprived and stressed, so I ate some bread 3x in the last 3 hours. Now I feel like an alcoholic just wanting more and I'm bloated like I'm 4mos pregnant.

    Why am I such a fool?:frown:

cutmd- I ate some mashed potatoes at a party today, I'm sure they had butter and milk in them. Then I had a cookie. Long story short, thank god the bathroom was free and I made it. It was family, but still, thats a terrible feeling. Now that was pretty stupid! And probably TMI, sorry about that. :embarassed:

Also had 2 glasses of wine Friday night and felt like I was at the bar doin shots. The room was spinning! I had such a hangover this morning. No wonder my doctor said no alcohol for a few months. I should have listened. LOL. Who'da thunk 2 glasses of wine would cause that infamous, "I'll never drink again!" speech.:noway:

I'll wait a few and try again, I'm sure.... lol. I'll just try 1 glass and leave it alone. Gotta build up my stamina again:laugh: :drinker: I can't imagine ever being a non-drinker....... Its like Snoop Dog giving up the ganja:smokin:     Just wouldn't be right.

    Thanks for the welcomes!

Ahhhh! Beer! I'm such a beer snob and addict. If my current career ever went in the sh!tter, I've wanted to open a brewery. And now I've been wondering if the wheat is why I end up so icky from it. I had tried the Red Bridge stuff a long while back just because it was different, not for the gluten stuff, and I didn't think it was bad.

My new addiction: the skinny girl margarita. Just tequila, a little triple sec/grand marnier, couple lime wedges and ice. They're strongish so you gotta sip and not loaded with calories & sugar like regular margs.

Question about soy sauce: Somewhere I got the notion that tamari soy sauce was ok, but when I went to get some this weekend at Publix it said it had wheat. Any suggestions or brands to look for? (And sorry if you guys have talked about this before, I haven't found it yet)

Oh, I tried the Quinoa "super food" pasta last night. Comes in a blue box. It's a blend of quinoa and corn flours. If any of you haven't tried it, you may like it. I thought it was pretty spiffy! :)

Tropical kitty- The low down on the soy sauce as I have discovered is this. Soy sauce, or shoyu as it is called in the culinary world, is brewed with wheat. Tamari is just soy and nothing else. They make wheat free soy sauce, but all it is just tamari. You can find it at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, or Better Health. I haven't found it in low sodium, but with all the restrictions I have, I could care less about adding another one. You know what I mean?

    Soy Sauce-

The last time we were at PF Chang's, I asked them where they got theirs and they gave mea bunch of free samples. The brand is "San-J" so I'm not sure where you can get it, but it's awesome and gluten free. I also have bought the La Choy brand, but I can't remember exactly which one. Be sure to read the label, but I do believe that they make one that doesn't have wheat in it.

San-J is an awesome brand of Tamari (soy sauce)!! Double check the ingredients, cause it seems that only a few of them are gluten-free, and the others have wheat in them!

I found an organic tamari at Kroger. And I second what you said Steph, as Publix's single brand of Tamari *did* have wheat in it.

I'm on the bread alternatives right now. It's grilling season and I'm sick of hot dogs and brats with no bun. *sigh* I was at the grocery store (Publix again) and I said how disappointed I was in their gluten free options, that Kroger had more choices. Well the store manager was telling me how they don't have the same amount of shelf space. Naturally I took that as "We don't care enough about making sure our customers can get what they need because you aren't important enough to have another slot on our shelves." Granted they had an end cap with some stuff, but still very limited selection. Like they had ONE frozen gluten free pizza: Amy's Spinach Feta. Wouldn't a generic cheese pizza be more apt to sell to more people than something that specialized? Sorry, I hate feta. I'm a pepperoni pizza girl. And I miss pizza right now...there are two gluten free pizza joints, 35miles from my house. That's a long drive...

I'm rambling. Ranting. Sorry. But I figure you guys and gals can understand some of the frustration as I learn where and how to shop now.

Hi Kitty, I don't want to ruin things for you, but hotdogs usually have wheat in them (or is it daily...?). I'm pretty sure Celiac people can't have them, and I definitely know I can't. I have to read the ingredients on EVERYTHING!!

As far as Gluten-free goes, I really like the Glutino products. They make snacky things like granola bars and cookies, which are nice as an occasional treat, when you feel like the wheat-eating world is against you. I notice their products at my local health food store now, too, where they usually have a bounty of GF foods.

As for pizza, I make my own... (Check out online recipes -- Google search "gluten-free pizza" is awesome!) You can also try Pizza Pizza, if it's around you at all, which has a GF pizza available (but it's expensive, and tastes like cardboard, but I can't have cheese and tomatoes, so that might contribute... That said, I did enjoy one they made for me, so I guess you the quality varies.)

I eat the Hebrew National hot dogs, no gluten! Plus, I think they have slightly better quality ingredients over the other brands.

INGREDIENTS: Beef, Water, Contains 2% or less of: Salt, Sodium Lactate, Spice, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Paprika, Sodium Diacetate, Garlic Powder, Sodium Erythorbate, Flavorings, Sodium Nitrite. CONTAINS: Soy

I'm too lazy to make pizza from scratch at home (occasionally I will) it's more of a "I had a long day at work and don't want to cook" thing. I'm sure I'll get over it eventually. I just figured this sensitivity out a couple weeks ago so I'm still sad at the things I can't have anymore. I tried one of the glutino crackers and they were yummy, I'm glad you said you like their stuff. I'll have to try more!

PS- I just did a google search on gf hot dogs, apparently Nathans has wheat in em. In the celiac's forums a bunch of comments on the hebrew national and boar's head being good, if you are wanting a hot dog this summer. :)

Hello!! I don't know if i'm gluten intolerant or not, however, I noticed when i did an atkins like low carb diet, I lost really well. Ok, so i switched to incorporating healthy snacks into my diet: granola bars, lite popcorn, rice cakes, 100 calorie packs, carrots and the weight loss stopped. So i started looking into the low glycemic thing and gluten free and wondered if I suffered from one of it. I don't have any of the symptoms you guys mentioned except bloating and constipation (i'm sorry about the graphic).

I just looked at a package of Nathan's hot dogs that I have in the freezer and they are gluten free......Besides the big bold gold letters that say gluten free on it, the ingredients show it. I was always a big fan of Sabrett's, but switched to Nathan's and Hebrew National....

I also use Hebrew National hot dogs for my daughter. As for bread, I'm over it. But my daughter likes occassional salami sandwiches and she loves toast with butter and jelly. Schar white bread is the best I've found (in her opinion). However, in a pinch we had to settle for Ener-g Brown rice loaf and it was equally accepted. Ener-g also makes hot dog and hamburger buns. I like that company because they are also dairy free. It was hard in the beginning to find gluten and dairy free baked goods! There is a glutenfree restaraunt that opened up near by, but they use eggs and milk in everything. I went in there and turned out to be just like any other restaraunt, all that was safe for me was salad.

For Pizza, look in the freezer section where the sell Amy's products. They usually have premade crusts that you just top and warm in the oven. We tried the Chebe dough. I liked it, but I didn't bake it long enough. The middle was chewy, but the crust was Awesome! And I even used an egg substitute. If I had baked it longer it would have been a hit, but I was impatient, lol! Thats why I'm not a good baker I guess.

The allergy doctor recommended that we try a serving of gluten next month and see how it goes. I'm leary about it. I've gotten used to this and so has my daughter. It was such a huge change and she has adapted well. Even the dietician said by allowing gluten she will have more variety. I can't help but feel deep inside that staying gluten free is not a bad thing. Next week we have an appointment with the PCP. I'm going to say these exact words and wait for his reaction. "I feel like you don't trust that I am able to provide my daughter with a nutritious diet, like I'm not knowlegable enough to rplace glutenated foods with healthy, nutrition packed, whole foods." And then I'm going to hand him a copy og her food diary, which I have been tracking on MFP. She meets her 2000 calories EVERY DAY!

OK, that turned into venting. Sorry about that, lol.

BTW, I tried the Redbridge Beer yesterday. It was different, but I drank 5, so it was accepable:laugh: :drinker:

Bloating and constipation are still symptoms. Everybody's reactions can be different. Its worth talking to your doctor about.

 I hear ya on that! I love beer and was always told I was a beer snob because I am a big microbrew fan that doesn't drink stuff like coors and A/Busch stuff. Now here I am drinking redbridge! I don't really have a choice. I have begged my hubby to make me some GF beer this summer. He is the one that makes our homemade wine and beer.

Kitty... Thanks a lot for posting that info and the ingredients!! I try to stay away from Nitrates, but they sound like a fun treat!! I'll have to see if I can find them around here. I remember when I was first told I had sensitivities, it took me forEVER to transition to GF foods. Especially since I didn't know what products were out there, and there weren't that many at the time. The Glutino crackers are great!! I also like the breakfast bars. Unfortunately, I still have to watch out for dairy.

Tameka... I know WannabeaCullen says talk to your doctor, but I say talk to a naturopathic doctor as well. Sensitivities (like I have, as opposed to Celiac Disease), are harder to detect, and I personally trust them more than someone trying to prescribe me drugs.

Nicolee... That's awesome they have a group near you! I'm going to have to do some searching now, myself.

WannabeaCullen... That sucks that the restaurant has eggs and milk. Did you ask specifically if they offered anything you could have? There's a GF/Vegan restaurant in the next city over from me, and they offer a lot I can have. Try looking at vegan restaurants too! They seem to be really health and allergy conscious. I'm glad your getting multiple opinions about the doctor that wants you to eat wheat. I can't believe that's coming from an allergy doctor... Are they conventional? Have you gone to a naturopathic doctor?

I'm a beer snob too. I have no idea what I'm going to do! I'm lucky in that this really just irritates my tummy so I have to spend a night in the potty and not sleep. We have tickets to our Brewer's Festival at the end of July, I've already decided that I'm making an exception to feeling well that night. I do plan on probing around to see if anyone is working on making anything, other than AB's RedBridge.

Holly, someone I know has issues with having her son be vegetarian. Her SIL ranted to her about how he had to have all the meat and stuff, while the SIL's kids eat junk food (chips etc). My friend has been a veggie for YEARS and of course makes sure her son gets everything he needs. Unfortunately too many people think wheat is the only whole grain out there, totally neglecting quinoa, amaranth, and a whole host of other grains. Good luck! I'm sure you can show you aren't doing wrong to your daughter! As for the breads/pizza, I'll see if my local store has any of those. There's a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in the city I work so if anything maybe I can make a special trip there occasionally (when I'm rich...).

These are my symptoms when eating wheat, including inability to lose weight. Try cutting it out but including the other stuff for a few weeks to test it out.

Holly, just to be devil's advocate, i think the allergist probably just wanted to figure out if she truly has an allergy to wheat or not, if she doesn't than it's true she will have more dietary options than yourself. Remember that most docs are not gluten intolerant and the idea of being sentenced to living gluten free for life sounds horrible to most people. I think they are just trying to figure out if she can be cut a break, not necessarily that they don't trust you.

Where do you get your protein from, Holly? Everytime I take a break from meat I find myself only getting a little protein from beans, and otherwise I have to employ tofu, etc....

Steph_135 - There are tons of good restaraunts.... on the west side. Its not worth the drive unless its a special occasion or something. This is the only GF one on the east side. I spoke to the owner. He was sorry he couldn't help me. It was actually an italian/pizza joint. All cheese. Not my thing anyway. The allergy doctor just wants to see if shes lost the sensitivity. Neither of us have celiac, just a sensitivity. After a period of detox, many people are able to tollerate gluten again. He is conventional, but I trust him. He is the partener and understudy of my lifelong ENT who has taken care of my entire family for 30 years. There aren't many natropahic doctors here. The ones that are charge far more money than a conventional doctor. I wouldn't trust any of them.

TropicalKitty - I get that kind of slack all the time. Its funny, because its always from the parents who have overweight, underactive, mouthy, children who are always in trouble. I think my PCP is just an idiot. Plain and simple. lol

cutmd - You are right. The allergist just wants to see if she can tollerate gluten again. Not wheat, because that is a certifiable allergy. She will never have wheat again. Its our PCP who seems to thing this who gluten thing is a hoax or something. He never wanted me to change her diet in the first place. Just give her clariton for the hives and benefiber for constipation. Like I said, he's an idiot, lol. I'm only sticking with him at the moment because he is in the process of declaring to our board of trustees and property manager that she have a dog for companionship. We are only allowed animals for medical reasons and she qualifies, unfortunately, because of depression due to having to change schools because of bullying and not having many friends. Plus the change in diet and several recent deaths, not to mention my current child support battle. Once we get the dog, I'll change doctors. Meanwhile, my endocrinologist teaches me alot so I don't need the PCP very much and our ENT/allergist is awesome, so I feel like we are in good hands.

According to MFP, I don't get enough protien. I eat beans, lentils, quinoa, soy, tofu, tempeh, and nuts and seeds. I also add nutritional yeast to recipes, sometimes blend beans into sauce for an extra kick. But according to blood tests, I'm not lacking. I focus mostly on veggies. I guess I have a macrobiotic approach as in the Kind Diet. A non-wheat grain, loads of veggies, and some protien.

what about the quaker rice cakes minis, chocolate??

I'm going to start a bit off topic from gluten free, but sometimes things that are touted as "healthy" by the advertisements aren't truly healthy. Rice cakes I don't consider healthy, just really empty carbs. Same thing with most granola - it's just a ton of pointless sugar. After doing a low carbohydrate diet, you'll naturally bloat up from the extra water that gets stored with the carbohydrates in your body. (For example, body builders eat extremely low carb prior to a show then carb load just before the show so they get the bulk of the water to look more muscular.) Also, your body may favor a lower carb eating regimen - mine does. If I eat a lot of carbs I feel funny, sort of high. More fats and protein and I can think clearer and perform better. So, the change you saw coming out of Atkins could be due to normal things. As for the chocolate, that's just sad. No one should be mistreated by chocolate.

Back to the gluten sensitivity thing. For me, I noticed a huge difference with in a day or two by adding a SINGLE slice of bread to my diet while doing South Beach. My tummy would swell. I've always had a finicky digestive system, but it's gotten worse. More noticable for me now has been the constant diarrhea, heart burn, gas, and bloat (both edema systemically and in the belly). My actual stomach was very irritated for about a month: very nauseated. Like the worst it's been ever. And what did I keep eating since we're told its supposed to help? Dry carbs! Toast, crackers, bagel. Anyway, I cut wheat only out of my diet and in a week I lost 10lbs. My tummy no longer bulged, I no longer was running to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I wasn't a balloon! June 16th, after being diligently gluten free for 5 days, I went and ate a bagel. Symptoms returned in about 30mins.

My point? I had mentioned to my doctor back in April my tummy discomforts and she said she hadn't heard of anything like what I was experiencing. With the help of my nutrition coach, we figured out my sensitivity. If you are really thinking it might be gluten, ditch it for several days (make sure you read labels, it's in soooo many products) then eat it and see what happens. Mention it to your doctor to be safe, but from the things I had read online, unless you have a severe intolerance (like Celiac's) any lab testing isn't necessarily going to help. (But some of the longer gf people here can correct me on that if I'm wrong)
  • NEW TO THE GROUP...Hello everyone!!! Boy am I glad I found you!!!

A little about my history. I have suffered with steady weight gain, especially in my stomach for almost 6 years. I could wake up and look 3 months pregnant in the morning and look 9 months by bedtime. I had stomach problems, muscle and joint problems, always tired and always gaining weight. Even when I was dieting, I couldn't lose. I was checked for all kinds of things including ovarian cancer, IBS, stomach blockages and put on all different kinds of depression meds and nothing worked. Finally about a year ago, I gave up on doctors. I went off all meds and until June 4th 2010, I had not seen a doctor in 18 months. What triggered me to go to the doctor was that I had swollen to the point no shoes would go on my feet and I could not grip a pen to write. I found a young lady doctor and made an appointment. She immediately put me on meds to get the fluid out and when it was all said and done, had ordered 34 different tests to find out what was up with me. Long story short..because my Vit D and B-12 was low and everything else was good and my complaints she sent me to a gastro and BAM- I have Celiac Sprue- gluten allergy - allergy to the stuff I wa trying to eat 10 servings of a day...OMGosh. She also found that I have severe sleep apnea and that is being treated as well.

To think I could have gone through my entire life not knowing I was gluten allergic. I am just getting started with my gluten free diet so I am glad to be here and learning tips and getting support!!!!

Welcome, 4myheartnsoul! Many of us share similar stories as you described, so know that you aren't alone! :flowerforyou:
  • HI Everyone! This seems like a great group! I was diagnosed lsast year with Crohns:cry: and I am STILL in denial! You know it is all a guessing game with the docs. My G.I. doc told me that it's like a puzzle and they can tell for pretty sure 80% and guess the other 20%. They say I am advanced...(mind you I have only had symptons for 2 years total) and they were NOT too bad either. My hubby is the one who finally said,...babe why do you go to the bathroom so much...and I say...I have been doing this for 2 years...and BAM he calls me from work and says he set me up an appointment. SO SCARY! I would have just went on forever like I was. Anyways I hardly believe I can be advanced as I really don't have the pain that others I know in support groups do. Seems unreal what they go through. I do not want to end up with an surgery so I am really trying to eat well. I am still trying to figure it out...I try really hard to stay on the "SPECIFIC CARBOHYDRATE DIET" which is more than just gluten free. Man it cuts out EVERYTHING it seems. I can't totally live by the rules of the book completely but I try pretty darn close. The book is for celiac's, Crohn's, Autism, IBS. It is a GREAT book, just a VERY restricted diet! I was losing a pound a day at first but it was just too hard to do it hard core. But I do live by it pretty close. You guys should check it out if just being gluten free is not working.
One thing that I do is make my own yogurt. I have about 2 cups a day that I make into a smoothie. I need the good bacteria to build back and start to repair my gut. It is one of the main things in the book. Yogurt in the stores are only fermented about 4 hours...which is not enough time for the good bacteria to grow, thus it is not a true yogurt. My yogurt is fermented for at least 24 hours. I REALLY want to have a good colonoscopy on my next visit. I have SO much scaring it is sad!

I have a really YUMMY muffin recipe that I live to die for. Tastes like banana bread and I even add berry medley to the batter and OMGosh it is the BEST. I keep about 6 in the fridge at all times and freeze the rest and just pull them out whenever I need them. My last version of this muffin was 155 in calories so it is high...darn almonds! But I only have one for bkfst and it is so close to banana bread feeling that I will take the cals. It is my treat!
I will gladly share it with you if you would like.

I find it ironic that I was pretty healthy before...I LOVED to eat whole grains. Heck we NEVER ate out growing up, always ground our wheat every morning and had whole wheat pancakes. Made our bread from scratch. Anyways we were VERY healthy and I have maintained that through my married life and BAM I get Crohn's. II have NO family history of Crohn's so I am essentially alone in this process, but they are very supportive.

Anyways thanks for this group. Will be nice to get to know others that struggle as I do! I am not alone...Thanks for listening to me :flowerforyou:
