Things I try to always keep on hand:

    Eggs
egg whites (just egg whites in a carton, not egg substitute)
    milk (1% organic)
    half and half
    cottage cheese
    Fage 2% plain Greek yogurt
2% cheese (Cheddar or Monterrey Jack usually)
    apples
berries (various kinds depending on what looks good at the time)
    other fruits in season
    salad/lettuce
other veggies to eat raw (carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, yellow bell peppers) depending on what looks good
    sweet potatoes
other veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, beets, green beans, squash, eggplant)
    mushrooms
    onions
    garlic
lean meats (chicken breasts, grass-fed ground beef, boneless pork chops) depending on what's a reasonable price
a few canned items such as tomatoes and tomato sauce and various beans, all with reduced or no sodium added
tuna (low sodium Tongol or Albacore)
    coffee
    various teas and herbal teas
    100% whole wheat bread
    steel cut oats
    natural peanut butter
    PB2 (powdered peanut butter)
    turbinado sugar

Anything else on my list would depend on specific dinners I had planned or if I was going to do some baking. Oh, and the occasional uncured (nitrate-free) bacon (pork) or sausage (pork or chicken) for a weekend breakfast.

    milk & cheese & yogurt
    bread
    meat (whatever is on sale)
    veggies
    cereals
    coffee/tea
fresh fruits (when in season) or frozen fruits
    peanut butter
nuts in a can (usually peanuts, unless cashews or almonds are on sale)

That's pretty much the basics. Occasionally, I will have to buy a new seasoning or spice for some recipe. And sometimes, there is something on sale that I will buy.
