i'm a Jersey boy living in Georgia....I can take it or leave it.
it's a non factor for me, I prefer other things about my woman0 -
Being a Southern woman, I feel completely comfortable saying there are gorgeous Southern accents and terrible Southern accents. In South Carolina alone, we've easily got FIVE dialects, all which carry different inflection and intonation. Orangeburg through Charleston, sea islands and Gullah: Mmmm! Love it! Columbia? Eh, less so. Parts of upstate get twangy, but others have that drawl that I love.
Sooooo... It depends on what KIND of Southern accent and how you're usin' it. There's often a misconception that Southern = redneck, which I've bumped up against a lot, and that's usually when people dislike it. (I have been told pretty often "but you don't LOOK Southern," which confuses me a LOT)0 -
I grew up in Boston so I don't pronounce my R's that being said I think Southern Accents are Super Sexy. Just call me Sugar or Darling with that accent and I will do anything for you!0
-
Sexy, I know because I married her.
Accent != intelligence. That said I have little patience for double negatives and the casual use of the word ain't. How's your grammar?0 -
i love southern accents. (my opinion may be biased because i was born and raised in south carolina)0
-
I'm not a guy, but I'm a BAMA girl...born and raised, and proud of my southern accent!0
-
I grew up in southern VA, have lived in NoVa and DC and now reside in RVA....I was immediately pegged as a southerner when I lived in DC and NoVa but you wouldn't believe the number of people that told me to never lose that accent!
Now I work with insurance agents all across the US...I mean I have people ALL over. Most of them are men who when they call me up tell me they just had to hear my voice because it was just so sweet and my accent was lovely.
So girlfriend, keep that accent and have pride! Y'all come back now, ya hear?0 -
my boyfriend has one.... I am from Maine so I like it because it is different.... I just don't like it when he calls me his old lady. I am exactly one month older then him I am not OLD. grr but I am working on that0
-
We can't help where we were born and raised, and we can't help how we were taught to speak...just because we speak with a Southern acccent does not give anyone the right to mentally deduct IQ points! I was born in North Carolina, raised in Virginia and yes, I have an accent and I'm proud of it!0

lol that has NOTHING to do with your age, if you were two years younger than him, you would still be his "old lady"0 -
I'm a MIssissippi boy, and married a girl from Arkansas. I love Southern accents. And as other posters have said.....It's the words and phrases used that make you sound ignorant or un-educated. Not the accent.0
-
firstlyyyy I am a girl
But I think southern accents are adorable! On men & ladies! I think that there IS a stereotype of southern accent = dumb = shoeless hill person but obviously if you are basing your opinion off an accent there leaves a LOT to be discovered... I have never heard a southern accent and automatically thought "idiot." Who does that???
I am from New England so if anything I'm slightly Boston-accented-ish, though barely that (I do say "wicked" quite liberally). Anyone up here with an accent is rare, but I have to say that EVERY person I can think of off the top of my head with such an accent is intelligent, and all but one (some crazzzyyy cranky lady...yikes) are some of the friendliest people I know!
In conclusion.. they can shove it.
edit to add- I also had a Professor from Oklahoma once and he had the sexiest voice ever... hmmm.. maybe I should move there0 -
I am from Texas and now live in south Louisiana, I have the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world regularly. I take pride in my southern heritage and accent. People tell me they love my accent. I have a college education and friends from around the world, none of which take my accent for ignorance or stupidity. When that does arise usually a quick wit with a little honey coating lets them know quickly that I am not "country come to town" and the attitude is changed immediately. For those thick skulled imbeciles who insist that accent is equated to intelligence- Bless your heart!0

I live in Georgia. There's a hick Southern accent and a non-hick Southern accent. You know it if you hear it. The hick accent is rougher, adds/subtracts syllables and the grammar and phrasing is atrocious. For example, a woman telling me that she taught her bird to sing happy birthday to her husband: "Ah dun lernt himma san' hap bert dee tuh ma hubban." That sounds uneducated and dumb.
The non-hick accent is just a softening and lengthening of certain sounds and sounds lovely. Too much can sound pretentious though.0 -
Love a southern accent. Also love an Australian accent. Both melt me into a puddle of horny.0
-
I'm not a dude
But i'm rockin that accent! You should too!0 -
When my wife gets a little tipsy, her southern accent comes out. I find it sexy. However, in country music (especially the ladies) when they sing with an obnoxious country accent it annoys the piss out of me because you can tell it is fake.0

Exactly!
I'm in Savannah Georgia. To me, the accent is nice and soft. The "hick" accent sounds very harsh and non inviting.0 -
Well, I am from south/east Florida so, try to imagine a guy with a slight southern twang in his voice who uses quite a but if surfing lingo.
Anyway, I never gave the whole southern accent much thought until I dated a girl from Tennessee.
Oh my GOD!!! I could listen to her babble for hours (and she did). Now, the fact that she was as dumb as a bag of rocks had nothing to do with her accent.0 -
I know Texas is not the same as Southern accent, but I absolutely hate my Texas accent and try to hide it whenever possible.
Guess that depends on where in Texas you are. I was born and raised and still reside in Texas and I'm told I have a deep southern accent all the time.0 -
For most women it adds a bit of character and charm to them..0
-
not a guy- but I love southern accents- on a man or a woman! I'm told I have one, but I don't really notice it- guess that's b/c everyone speaks the same round here!0

So, out of nowhere I get told that I sound uneducated and stupid just by the tone of my voice and incredibly thick southern accent. This rude comment was interrupted by a guy who said he thought accents were incredibly sweet and sexy. Then this turned into a debate of about 30 men all with very different opinions. So I have to hear it from my MFP people since you all seem to be brutally honest.... Yes or no to a girl with a southern accent. And you have to tell me why. I am beyond curious!
I love a sexy woman with a southern accent, certain British and French accents, very hot. Whoever said that to you should be beaten.0 -
Grew up in Louisiana.
There are unattractive southern accents out there, but a sweet one reminds me of warm honey and slow sex.0 -
The warm honey and slow sex comment is spot on. There's nothing sweeter than being called sweetie or darlin' (or any other number of terms of endearment) when it comes from a girl with a Southern accent. Gives me that warm fuzzy feeling like laying on the grass on a warm day without a care in the world.0
-
I say be proud of your accent and where you come from. Believe me some people in the north have accents that can make them sound not to bright, so it is not just a southern thang!0
-
I love you guys! your all so supportive! Best people to go to for advice! Thanks!0

I'm not a man, but...
I think there's a huge difference between a southern accent and a southern drawl. Whenever I hear someone with a drawl, I can't help but think they're uneducated and trashy...Honey Boo Boo-esque...but a more genteel southern accent can be quite attractive!
I find this to be true of most accents, regardless of the region of origin.
Being from the south ( I did not grow up in the south, but I've lived here my entire adult life from the age of 14) I completely disagree with these first two sentences above^^ A southern drawl is a TYPE of southern accent and has nothing to do with poor grammar or being educated or uneducated. It has to do with the way some southerners drag the end of each word/sentence and make some words sound elongated.
That being said, I do think some southerners sound uneducated (as well as some people from other parts of the world) and there is far more poor grammar here, than there is in other parts of the US. I do find men with southern accents sexy (my boyfriend) SOMETIMES. They must still sound educated though, and believe me there are PLENTY of educated southerners despite what media tries to portray.0 -
Nothing wrong with a Southern accent at all. I have a friend with a serious Georgia accent and I could listen to her read the dictionary all day long. She is well aware that most men go crazy over it and I have definitely seen her use it to her advantage many times.
I don't think my accent is too bad, but I get asked at least once a week where I'm from. My dad is full-on Cajun, my mom is from the South, I was born and raised in southeast Missouri, and have lived in northeast Florida for 20 years. Guess it's some kind of hybrid accent. I worked a couple of years in radio and was constantly told I needed to ditch the accent.
To me it's more about the quality of words coming out of a person's mouth than how those words sound.0 -
just cause someone sounds like a hick doesnt mean there uneducated..
i sound like one and im very much educated.
-Kelsey.
and p.s. who doesnt love a southernbelle?0
