Reality tv was a product of a writers strike in Hollywood. Television couldn't hire non union writers to replace the ones on strike and so reality tv was invented to skirt the issue. But people like it and so it never went away.

It's fine to watch these shows if you want. Go for it & enjoy. But I have friends who have worked as producers on reality dating shows and its not at all real. It's scripted with a story arc planned ahead and all that.

Ok, I do admit to watching some of those shows when nothing else is on. But my favorite ones are like Hell's Kitchen, Top Chef, Restaurant Impossible, etc. Can you tell I love the Food Network Channel? But then I love to cook/bake and if I had my time to do over, I would be a chef! I'm still considering starting a catering business since I'm retired and can do something I love!

Just think we have Survier to thank for all of this. The first suppose to be reality show. Can't stand any of them. My t.v. gets turned of by 8 p.m.

They call it reality but it's all scripted. It's dumb! I absolutely despise those shows. Unfortunately, they seem to be everywhere! It's like that Jersey Shore show - a bunch of idiots getting drunk and partying...those guys are stars? Really? I remember when actors were actors - not a bunch of idiots on a screen getting it on. Sigh...we've dropped in intelligence to the oomph degree.

Also, they keep producing movies and claiming "based on real events" when they aren't. For example, that stupid paranormal series which was supposedly based on abductions in Alaska? That whole thing was fake - no psychologist...yet they screamed "This happened!"

The truly awful include that new movie called "Won't Back Down" that's supposed to be about parents taking over a school and supposedly making it into some sort of educational utopia. The only problem - it never happened...there is no school...no parents...no kids...no curriculum.....nada - just a fake script and an actress who supposedly cries on the screen. The whole thing is a fake propaganda movie created by the charter school industry to sell charter schools. They scream "Real!" but the whole thing is fake.

Honestly, I don't blame you. Some of the selections that are appearing out there are downright awful.

I'm with you on wanting to turn off the tv when it comes to this stuff.

Oh... And here I thought it was the fiscal considerations of ad generated revenue promulgating the production companies, network and cable providers on which the shows aired, to an audience of unsuspecting dullards who don't know any better.

But, apparently it's simply to "get attention," says Shirtless-Fake-Mickey-Rourke-Guy.

Sometimes my awesomeness scares even me.

    Quite simply, stupid sells.
    This makes me sad.

The longer I live the more I'm convinced that the movie "Idiocracy" was highly prophetic.........

Isn't it though? I'm just waiting for shows titled something like "The Prostitute Diaries" or "Mules and Drug Runners". Maybe I should pitch these ideas to the networks.

Reality TV costs about 75% less to produce than a regular television show
We're a country that loves to laugh at ones expense
They've basically made a show about every profession but retail at this point

Can someone please explain to me why TruTV felt that there was a massive deficiency of "car-towing drama" in American broadcasting, such that they felt compelled to fill the void with inane, absurd, laughably staged "reality shows" that center around Neolithic imbeciles who pretend to tow cars for living?

Because people are addicted to watching fat and stupid white trash on TV (Honey Boo Boo comes to mind). I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.

I saw a listing for My Teenage Wedding last night.. didn't dare watch it.

I don't know why marriage and pregnancy is being shoved down the throats of kids. Parenthood isn't easy.

I've never actually sat down and watched any of those towing shows, but I do have a couple of programs on TruTV that I DVR, and I'll see the previews and commercials for them. I was actually thinking the same thing recently--WHY are there so many towing shows? Is this popular now or something? The only "reality" show I watch is Hardcore Pawn...those "customers," whether they're real or fake, are hilarious to me. Otherwise...not a fan of "reality" shows.
