DON'T OVER-DO THE WATER--HERE'S WHY

Some years ago I ended up in the hospital with this. I was not a long distance runner. I was fasting, and drank a couple gallons. Not fun. Not only is the sodium low, but I also had to get potassium. The reason is exactly what you see on this board - No one thinks it could be harmful. Right now, I have trouble getting in enough water, so I'm challenging myself to drink more of it. I think the lesson here is drink enough but not too much.
Interesting, thanks for sharing.0 -

*sigh* As with all crazy claims that pop in the forums, all that's required is balance. Not hysteria.
"Drink water in moderation. Drinking water is vital for your health, so make sure you drink enough fluids. But don't overdo it. Thirst and the color of your urine are usually the best indications of how much water you need. If you're not thirsty and your urine is pale yellow, you are likely getting enough water."

There was a lady on 1000 ways to die that died from drinking too much water.0

While I agree, it's not necessary to over-do the water, like so many members of MFP like to do, I think it would be very hard to drink enough water to cause hyponatremia.0

thanks for the reminder to drink another bottle of water. lol0

By overdo, clearly the implication is that you're consuming gallons of water in a go, and would put yourself in such a state that you would have hyponatremia. Or any other "scary" word Pubmed can crap out.0
-
Causes of hyponatremia include:
Burns
Congestive heart failure
Diarrhea
Diuretic medications, which increase urine output
Kidney diseases
Liver cirrhosis
Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)
Sweating
Vomiting
Did you notice this list didn't include drinking water as a cause0 -

LMFAO! When I was little my dad used to tell me that the leading cause of death was breathing. Turns out he was right :laugh:0 -
Don't shoot the messenger. I was merely passing along information that several people had already found useful and asked me to post here. You can use it or not. You are free to choose. And this is why I won't post anything further in these forums; some people just have to makes jokes about everything except what they feel is important.0

This is scary because I was told to log my showers as water. Am I at risk?
Also, if you take a hot hot bath, will it burn fat?
Showers are supposed to be logged as exercise, silly!0 -
The British National Health Service says:
*********************************
http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pages/water-drinks.aspx
"the Department of Health recommends that we should drink about 1.2 litres of fluid every day.
This works out to be about six 200ml or eight 150ml glasses."

NO...what you DO in the shower is logged as exercise, silly! The shower itself, the act of water falling on you in an semi-organized fashion, is to be logged as water intake.0 -

Aaaah, thanks for clearing that up! :bigsmile:0
