Weigh raw egg with or without shell?

edited January 1 in Food and Nutrition
Hi guys,

I want to weigh my eggs (using the egg - raw) and was wondering if I weigh them with the shell and input that or do I weigh the liquid inside after breaking them?

Same question for bananas - raw: is this with or without the peel?

    Not sure if serious!

    In case you are:

Why don't you just use the database that says '1 egg' or '1 banana'.

How cute, this reminds me one time my ex hubby friend was making us dinner. He was preparing mashed potatoes. Dinner was late he was trying to mash the potatoes before boiling them!!!

I'd say that since an egg shell weighs something like one megabajillinth of an ounce, you might not need to seriously worry about it.
As for the banana, that is a bit easier to weigh without the peel, but I think you might be better off just logging in the 'banana, large, medium, small etc.'

By the way, have you ever watched the show MONK?

    :flowerforyou: you win.
  • Why would you even weigh your food in the first place?

I weigh EVERYTHING and even I don't weigh eggs. They're already weighed when they're sorted in to the sizes they're sold as- Large, XL, Jumbo, etc.

As for bananas- I did actually weigh a few of them when I first started so I could get a visual understanding of 'large' and 'medium' bananas. You weigh them without skin. The thing about bananas is- one of the main benefits is that you can get them as convenience foods- and weighing them every time you're going to have one is very inconvenient. Don't make this harder on yourself than you need to.

Thanks for the laugh! Of course, if you actually EAT the peel, that's a different story...

    Personally, I love this question:heart:
  • Okay, thank you for the helpful replies guys. I just thought one day- what if the mfp data includes the weight of the inedible portion of the food. Also, I get some pretty darn large eggs sometimes and they aren't labelled as any size so sometimes I can't really pick a size when counting egg calories. To everyone who thinks this is a joke, Ill admit it is a pretty funny thing to ask but please stay safe.

Also, my decision to weigh foods is closely related to my nutrition goals, thank you for your concern on this I guess.

stop throwing out the shell that's where all the nutrients are
  • I haven't weighed eggs before but I plan to with my latest batch of eggs that a family friend brought over which are all different sizes.

I believe eggs have the calories on the package. And, I don't think they expect you to eat the shell. Other than that, the MFP database has different size eggs and the calories.

The shell doesn't weigh much. Do it whichever weigh (hehe) is easiest for you.

I would agree with only weighing what you eat. A banana peel is far heavier than an egg shell. An egg shell has so little weight I would just weigh the stinking egg whole and be done with it.

You should eat the shell it has calcium - but wash it first. After washing, use a hair dryer on a cold setting to make the water evaporate so as to avoid weighting it.

WITHOUT. Unless you want to snack on lovely, crispy egg shells and make lovely wraps with banana peels.
