I saw a comedian once that said he was going to hand out boullion cubes. Why not? They're wrapped liked candy. HILARIOUS!0

BTW I had not a clue that marshmallow had meat byproduct in it. I'm not vegan but it is interesting non the less. I have so much to learn about food.
Gelatin is made of ground up animal bone, pork skins, horses,or split cattle hides. Used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many foods such as candy, marshmallows and ice cream.
Some vegans will buy organic or animal free cosmetics. But many, many people who are veg by principal still take medicine and wear make up consisting of dead animal. Doh!0 -
We never have many kids. I'm not sure what we're going to do this year. We don't have much money, anyway, so we may turn out the lights and just not have anything. Or... we may buy just one ag. I'm not sure. If I had too many left over, though, I would probably be tempted to eat them as well. Good thinking on buying something that doesn't tempt you.0

If you eat gelaitn and call yourself vegetarian, you're kidding yourself. They're produced with the byproduct of a dead animal. You might as well just eat hamburgers and call yourself veg. lol
It isn't a gray area.
ha ha was trying to be diplomatic as have always wondered where one draws the line. (I'm not a vegetarian myself, meat is delicious.) But do vegetarians not use lipstick or glue? same thing.
I can't remember the last time I needed glue, though, and I hardly ever wear lipstick, so anything I have is leftover from my pre-veg days, anyway. I can't speak for all of them. :-)
I do know gelatin is a definite no-no!
Hope you don't take antibiotics, acetaminophen, anti-depressants or pain pills of any kind!0 -
Every year, I go out and buy 5-6 mega bags of mini candy bars for Halloween. Even tho we generally only have maybe a couple of dozen trick or treaters...
We generally have tons of the stuff left and I can eat Snickers and Peanut Butter Cups all day!
To solve my problem of having all that candy left over after the season, I purchased Rice Crispy Treats!
My reasoning, first of all, I wont sit and eat them one after another if there are any left...
AND even if I do have one or two after the season, they are much less of an evil than a Snickers! o_O
My kids are not happy! lol
What do you do to avoid the left over candy?
Do you not buy the candy and do something different?
Just looking for some other ideas for next year maybe...
I give out packages of microwave popcorn and you would think no kid would want that but the first year we did candy we got about 20 or so kids. The next year we did the packages of popcorn and we got bombed with kids so bad that I had to send my husband to the store to get more. Now we get so many trick or treaters because they come for the package of popcorn that we buy that big box for $5 from walmart of the Weaver brand popcorn. I think there's like 20 packages in it. Anyway, we have to buy about 20 boxes of it to be safe and so far every year we've only had maybe 2 and a half boxes left over, lol. Who would've thought?lol0 -
Here the kids come out after dark & the general "rule" in town is if the porch lights are OFF, no one knocks on the door.
I used to take my kid out ....... she was way more excited about dressing up than about the candy ...... we would chuck half of it that night ........ nowadays I might give candy out (candy I don't like, of course) ....... but this year I'll be at a yoga class, so my husband (Mr. GrumpyPants) said he'll just sit home in the dark, playing FarmVille
I hope everyone has a safe & happy Halloween :drinker:0 -
We buy way way too much candy, but we do it for a reason. We have one child allergic to peanuts, and we have one child allergic to dairy. So we need enough candy that we can hand out to the trick or treaters, as well as trade our kids our safe candy for their not safe candy. Anything homemade also sadly goes straight to the garbage, we don't know whats in it.
And the leftovers, we just keep them. We eat them slowly over the next few months.0 -

Well, it's pretty much "Halloween" in my house....year round. What I mean is, my children have Cystic Fibrosis, which means that they HAVE to have a "high fat/high calorie" diet. I'm talking, my sons (twins) are 3 years old, and their caloric intake is set at 3000 calories per day. Their specialists encourage me to feed them chocolate bars breakfast, noon & night, and to eat McDonalds as often as humanly possible. I've been doing this for almost 4 years now......and they are 36 and 38 pounds (at almost 4) so still, slightly under a "normal" child. Doctors have told me countless times that "Cystic Fibrosis goes against anything you've EVER learned about health and nutrition". My kids do not eat vegetables, there is no point (as i'm told) their bodies will get NOTHING from that. Instead, they take hoards of medications & vitamins to get their daily intake.
I can't live by the "if you don't want to eat it, don't have it in your house" theory, which I've always done growing up. My house is stocked full of chocolate bars, chips, cookies, doritos, ice cream, pop tarts, baked goods, pizza, mcdonalds, nuggets etc.......anything you can think of that is EXTREMELY fattening.....is in my house, every day.
So, Halloween won't bother me one bit, LOL
YOU are steel woman! Kudos to you!0 -

All I said was I don't eat Rice Krispy Treats because of the gelatin, AFTER stating that it wasn't a bad thing to give out for trick or treaters. I didn't push anything on anyone or lecture anyone.
Why do you feel the need to attack me?0 -
IMO, halloween is necessary. My mom didn't take away halloween for me as a child, even though she was a healthy eater herself - I would either give my kids our leftover candy and tell them to keep it away from me, or find someone else to give it to! That candy is a staple of growing up. I am so glad I had my years of eating 7500 candy calories once a year.0

The little kids start trick-or-treating around 3:30 and the big ones don't top until about 9. I don't get many, but enough that I have to buy candy. I just buy candy I don't like, which is easy for me as long as I avoid anything with peanut butter or dark chocolate.0

My city is presenting an interesting alternative for Halloween this year. Instead of candy they are encouraging people to hand out passes to public swims and public skates, you can buy packs of 10 for $10. I think it's a fantastic idea if you're in an area where you don't get many kids. (could be a bit costly if you get 100 or so!)
When I was doing Jiu Jitsu my dojo always had free trial classes that you could hand out at halloween to the kiddies, I like alternatives that keep kids active, though I do tend to hand out candy as well.0 -

I think there is room for some middle ground where people can be morally opposed to the meat industry but also flexible when it comes to modern convenience. I know some people would label that as "kidding themselves", but so what? I do not understand why some people will accept nothing less than militant obedience to a doctrine in order to be considered "true" anything.
I think as long as a person isn't screaming in my face about what I'm doing wrong, there is little value in me questioning their behavior. To each his or her own.0 -
I buy the little glow stick bracelets. I get them at Michaels. $1 for 15. All the kids love them and no junk left for me to eat!0
-
I'll be handing out raisins and protein shakes and ezekiel bread with sweet potato spread.
Then, I'll move to another state because my house would get burned down.
Honestly, I'll be handing out candy bars and when it nears the end of the night some lucky kid will be getting a buttload of candy. This solves the leftover candy issue and it makes one kid really freakin' happy.
I love this idea, but I'm not sure I'm strong enough to give it all away! LOL Luckily I wont be at home on Halloween this year so I don't have to deal with the pressure0 -
Plus.... bacon.0

I am one of those rare people who doesn't like Snickers, so I buy those to hand out. The kids are happy, my husband is happy, and I have zero temptation so I'm happy.0

I'm with you. Halloween was around long before the obesity epidemic. Candy on Halloween and Easter isn't causing overweight children and it's fun! Plus, you have to walk to get the candy. Or you should, anyway. That's more fun than being driven around.
I give out Kit Kats because they're the only decent candy I can find that doesn't have trans fat. It's my silly quirk, but hey. At least the very few kids we get have something yummy in their bags. :-)
I need to pick up some candy this weekend. And a pumpkin.0 -
Plus.... bacon.
I never liked bacon. Odd, huh?0 -
I give the extra to our church- they give it to the kids in Sunday School Class (for memorizing Bible verses and whatnot). I hear you can give the extras to chicldren'ss hospitals, too.0

Plus.... bacon.
I never liked bacon. Odd, huh?
Well, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie but I'll never know...0 -
Thankfully we don't have many kids in our neighborhood. I'm not sure why we don't get them bussed in like some neighborhoods do but I'm assuming it's because we're in a small neighborhood and the mall is right down the road so they can just go there instead if they're going to get a bunch of kids together and drive them somewhere...
Anyway, point is, I don't have to buy bags of candy! I'll snag a few of this and that from the candy store here at work to make sure I've got a few things in case any friends stop by with their kids. If there is anything leftover, I'll either give them to Hubs or bring them back in to work and throw them on the counter in the kitchen for whoever to have.0 -

Mmmmm. I do like pumpkin pie.0 -
Plus.... bacon.
this is why MFP needs a like button.0 -
I also do the 'Give those last 5 kids a LOTTTTT of candy because there is too much in the bowl.0

My weekness has always been more the pre halloween eating. You know buying it up ahead and then having to buy it again to give out at halloween. This year in addition to not buying early I am thinking about giving out juice boxes. My kids are thrilled part way through trick or treat to get something to drink and left overs get frozen into juicy pops for the kids to eat. None of that stuff really calls to me for snacking so I think I can manage. I will let the kids pick a bag of ``left overs`` but it will go into their candy bowl and I am pretty good at not swiping their stuff. My husband will be unhappy.LOL0
-
I also send left over candy with my husband to work0
-
We live out in the country so no trick or treaters here. But when we did hand out treats I tried to buy stuff I didn't care for like Mary Janes or Bit O Honey.0
-
I purchased Rice Crispy Treats!
My kids aren't eating anything some stranger homemade and threw in their sacks.0
