For bread - just make any quickbread (banana, pumpkin, blueberry, etc) and throw about a tablespoon into the batter. I do this with ground flax seed or wheat germ and it hides well.
For where to get them...Whole Foods or something might have them but I order mine on Amazon (Nutiva Organic Chia Seeds). It seems kind of expensive (about $16 for a 2pack of 12 ounce bags) but it comes out to less than a quarter per tablespoon. And if you hate them, it's easy to hide them in quick breads or smoothies.0 -
Try an organic healthfood store - or the organic section of your grocery store. I bought my first batch from Amazon though.0

Maybe get the new chia cookbook from your library. But basically, you get most benefit from them if eaten right from the package, not added to a muffin or anything baked. I add mine to yogurt.0

my mom gets into fad diets, the latest one is chia seeds. apparently there great for your health but we now have two great big bags of them and she has lost interest already. so, the question is what can i make with them and how can i work them into the family diet without a lot of effort?
I add them daily to my activia yogurt for breakfast. You can add them to a salad, crush them into powder to use in making bread,... there is a wealth of information and recipes for using them. Try this:

I always cook some kind of whole grain porridge for breakfast. (Cracked Wheat, Steel Cut Oats, Mixed Grains, etc) I sometimes throw in a Tablespoon or so of the seeds into the porridge while it is cooking.0

Chia seeds are supposed to expand in your stomach, causing you to be fuller faster. They are also high in omega 3's. I usually put them in yogurt, on top of chicken and veggies, in shakes, and in oatmeal. Try something where you can mask the taste in case you don't like it. I like them a lot and I could eat them in spoonfulls hehehe
No so much a "taste" as it is they are so small that when chewing they are apt to get stuck in teethe like strawberry seeds. adding them to something smooth that is swallowed without chewing is preferred by most users.0 -
Chia seeds are full of omega 3. Great for bones and joints. You don't have to grind them like you would with flax seeds. I add them to my smoothies and soups.0

Because of how much they expand in size they fill you up. They're not bad. I add 2 tablespoons to my breakfast cereal on weekends. I really don't suggest adding it to a smoothie, unless you drink it right away. I let mine sit for a half hour and it was so thick I could barely drink it out of the straw lol. Check out some Raw recipes that use chia seeds. Like chia porridge. I suggest the Red Mill's brand. It's cheaper than most or all of the other brands out there. I think I paid $8 for a bag and there were four other brands that were $15 or more.0

Chia Seeds are cool because they absorb liquid and become kind of gelatinous. So you can use them to make healthy puddings, to make smoothies, etc. They're really good for you too.0

I started using Chia seeds about 3 weeks ago --- I love these little seeds. You DO NOT NEED to grind them you can have them as is (unlike flax). They plump up to 10 times there size and work great for thickening things (as opposed to starch or potatoes or cream). They have a great amount of fibre as well as the Omega acids that we all need... My dietician suggested I start using them -- I have them in a glass of water morning and night...LOVE THEM0

I make my own granola and protein bars and put them in. Great in oatmeal and any kind of baking, really. Just keep some dental floss on hand.0

I had a couple friends try to push them on me so I did some research and the thing that really triggered my interest is that I had a whole bunch of episodes of migraines last year and they were becoming so frequent that my doctor prescribed meds to help minimize them, but I am not a fan of medications long term so when I read that others found their headaches go away, I decided to try it. I have now been migraine-free since December 27.
There are SO many benefits to chia seeds and I recommend doing a good search on chia recipes for baking. I've actually made scones using chia seeds as an egg supplement and they were REALLY good!
Do your research, you won't be sorry.

I never even realized.... my migraines have all but left too since using them. I might still wake with one but those used to have me down for the day, now I just take an excedrine when it happens and I'm solid. I never put it together, was just waiting for them to return from their vacation...0 -
I'd echo everything that everyone else has said. Great benefits like Omega 3s and feeling fuller, and you can add them to pretty much anything without it really altering the taste at all. Really quite versatile. We make both granola and cereal with Chia Seeds: louisesfoods.com/chia-seed-granola.0

I always keep a jar of 'chia gel' i.e. chia seeds soaked in water (ratio 1:10) ready to add to smoothies/breakfast etc. as it is easier to digest and obtain the full nutrients.0 -

I add them to my yogurt every morning. Have also added it to smoothies and baking. Tossed it on/in rice plain or pilaf and stirfries.

Saw them there once and never picked them up now cause I want to buy them I cant find them. I still keep looking in the hopes I can get them there cause they were far cheaper most the places I saw. Grrrr!!!
And the migraine thing I get them too and have noticed an improvement. When I take the chia regularly. Never even thought about it before. Looks like them things will be a constant companion in my purse when traveling.0 -

I had them for breakfast this morning.
I mashed half a ripe banana, added some liquid egg white and fluffed that together, sprinkled on some ground chia seed. Stirred well, blast in a microwave for a minute or so. Turns out like a sort of pancake.
It would be nice with a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a drop of vanilla essence.0 -

So do you feel full after your morning glass of water with the chia seeds. I have read, because they expand you don't feel hungry. Is that correct?:drinker:0 -
No cook refrigerator oatmeal. You don't really taste them, but they absorb excess liquid and give the oatmeal a yogurty texture.

I had bought a bag (at Trader Joe's) and had only eaten them once in my salad. That was yummy but was eating yogurt when I read this and decided to add a half tbsp. to it. I found another way to eat them! It was delicious - 1/2 c. plain greek yogurt, 1/2 c. blueberries, 1/4 serving vanilla whey protein powder, 1 tbsp ground flax meal and 1/2 tbsp. chia seeds.0
