For those people who claim "If you can talk / read etc you're not working out"
I think this is a rather narrow minded view - and without wanting to point fingers, its generally the one held by those who are lifters.
I completely agree that strength training requires concentration and good form - back ground music might be on but you cant be focused on it at all. However...
People who want to spend an hour in the gym walking on a tread mill or doing the equivalent on a bike are doing legitimate exercise. Its lower impact sure, but this is a great way into weight loss and exercise routine. In other cases it might be that its a kind of relaxation rather than a heavy work out. Heck - I'm a Triathlete/Marathon runner and there are some rest/recovery days when I'm stuck in a hotel in a strange city on a rainy day and actually going for a half hour walk is a great way to stretch out the muscles. And I could read a book doing that (if I wanted to).
Exercise classes and high-rep type circuits are well suited to listening to music
Endurance CV is fine for music or watching TV.
Talking on a 20 mile social run is normal- encouraged even!

When I'm doing my strength training, nothing. There's usually music playing, but I mostly concentrate on counting my reps.
I do cardio for an hour every day, and I usually watch a movie or tv show on my iPhone to make it go a little faster. I still get in 11-13 miles each time, and I work up a pretty nice sweat, so I don't agree at all that you can't workout while watching tv.0 -

If im doing a cardio workout then I usually do it along with a cardio dvd or youtube workout. If Im on my indoor rower il put youtube on and watch make up/beauty/clothes videos (im such a girl!) or put music on as it gives me a time frame to work with, So say I tell myself work through a 10 min video or 3 songs. Il listen to music when I do a kettlebell workout as it helps pass the time0
