i personally set mine to 1200..think mfp originally had me at 1500? cant remember.. think it might have been higher. any who... it was time for a life changer for me. probably get bagged on for this..but seen the workouts and diet that people were put on.. from a couple of different shows... they were worked hard and put on a 1200 or so diet and the ladies had lower cal diets than that.. and no i dont believe everything i see on tv. how ever i thought i would give it a try. and it has worked for me.... occationally i have gone above that and some times below..just kinda depended on what i ate that day. which is another reason i set that 1200 goal..if i go over it isnt going to be a big deal. no matter what im going to be hungry... i was hungry when i ate poorly. with my current diet at 1200 i eat more now than i did before. but less cals. plus since i am burning fat . i am putting that sludge to work. burnt fat gives you more energy. so dont have to get it all from food.
do i plan on staying at 1200 cals forever? hell no.. once i get down to weight. i will slowly increase my cals tell i can come up with a good combo. right now to maintain current weight..
current bmr 2711.41
If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
4677 cals to maintain current weight
If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9
5151 cals to maintain current weight.
im actually between those 2 calorie number some where. i watch what i eat and eat what i want. i do tae kwon do 3 times a week, i go to gym lift weights , stretch and hit the stationary bike.. and i hit the pool when to nasty out side to walk or to fill in for one of of the other things if i dont do it. plus i practice my tkd on my own when i find the room to do it with out any one getting in my way. i am down 140 lbs . 120 of that since june of this year and that is when i weighed in over a week ago. and i have a goal of 117 lbs for the next 6 months. if i hit it...then great if not...not worried bout it..because i will have worked my azz off and earned what ever weight i get rid of. it is all in the mind set and will power..
i got sick of sitting at home rotting away with my back injury. so if im going to be in pain..might as well be in pain and trying to get my health straightened out.
1200 may or may not work for you..it is up to u and how your body works.0 -

Has anyone else noticed that most of the "I have a problem..." threads are started by those with a 1200 calorie daily limit? Especially the "I can't stop snacking" and "I'm so hungry!" threads.
Coincidence? Something to consider if you're currently struggling at 1200 calories?
Or am I just imagining this?

This isn't meant to attack you but nutritionists are idiots.
When I discovered my allergies I saw a nutritionist (Dr. ordered visit). I told her; "I don't know how to eat anymore. Everything I thought I was supposed to eat I'm now allergic to! What do I do??"
She said; "This is a food pyramid. Eat the portions of each part of the pyramid and you'll be fine."
Me: "But I'm allergic to an entire section of that freaking pyramid!!!!"
Her: "... *smile smile* Just eat the portions indicated of each part of the pyramid and you'll be fine."
Yeah. I never went back and haven't asked to speak to a nutritionist OR dietician since.
That said. You should definitely listen to your Doctor and nutritionist. I'm sure they know what they're talking about. I wish you the best of luck!
did you know that doctors do not take any sort of nutrition classes? you're better off asking a nurse lol...honestly, healthcare changes every single second of the day; what we thought we knew yesterday doesn't apply today...i mean, look at diabetes...my mother was just diagnosed with that....she had to go to two different diabetic nutritionists and they contraindicated each other...so i took over my mother's case...4 months later her A1C was down to 7 from a 13....her cholesterol went from the 400's to 70!! I'm not saying i have the answers----not what i'm saying....but please do some researching and don't trust your doctor to have all the answers Go to your local library---so much information available! I chart every thing I put in my mouth being it a piece of gum. Using the food tracker here. I'm a newly diagnose diabetic. Seen the counsellor just yesterday. And told her what I was doing. And she was fine with it. I'm aiming for 1200 get there fine under ok. But I want to see between 1200 and 1500 after 7 days. So whatever it gives me. That way I don't need to be so strict.
Just me and I hope it works this time. Yo yoed to long and that's what I got from it.

Sure it is. Once again, I wonder why there's this idea that everyone on 1200 is doing radical dieting. It depends on the size of your frame and on your current weight. I'm mini-sized. Not twiggy skinny. I'm short, narrow shouldered, and I'm only carying 20lbs extra weight, and that's what the thing recommended to me and it hasn't been remotely challenging so I seriously doubt I'm starving myself.0 -

Sure it is. Once again, I wonder why there's this idea that everyone on 1200 is doing radical dieting. It depends on the size of your frame and on your current weight. I'm mini-sized. Not twiggy skinny. I'm short, narrow shouldered, and I'm only carying 20lbs extra weight, and that's what the thing recommended to me and it hasn't been remotely challenging so I seriously doubt I'm starving myself.
Oh this doesn't sound like a big deficit AT ALL. In fact, at 1200 calories, you're probably going over your TDEE so muscle would definitely be retained here, I'm actually surprised your not gaining muscle as some of the other magical 1200 calorie eaters are.

To JustaNumber85: Reading through these posts I noticed alot of people were not being very supportive. Dont give up. I am on 1200 calories too. When I joined MFP in August that was the number they suggested. I have just re-started again after about 4 weeks of personal issues. Most people I have come across here are kind and supportive. Ignore the rest. One thing that helps me is drinking the water. The rule I try to follow is to drink half my weight in ounces. I add lemon juice to the water too. I stay on track better with protein and veggies. Also I journal my food the day before so I have a plan. I tweak it at the end of the day. I am 50 and want/need to lose another 70 pounds. That's what makes no sense. It's just my opinion, to be sure, but I am trying to lose weight slowly. In fact, I just increased my calories because I am still losing over two pounds a week.0 -

I've eaten 1200 calories a day for 5 1/2 months and lost 77 lbs. Also intense exercise 6 days a week. It is working for me.0

You liking to eat and eat more is fine - that is personal preference. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with losing 1lb a week. Also, with strength training, at a 1lb a week deficit you should maintain as much LBM as with a 1/2 lb deficit. I have not seen anything to indicate otherwise.

Weight loss is not a race. You want to make it enjoyable as possible. That means consume as much as food as possible, while still losing at a healthy rate.
More food equals more fuel, which means better mood, and most importantly better performance in the gym.0 -

So true! It's frustrating but if I up my calorie limit I PUT ON weight. I think I just have a ****e metabolism or something. I do find 1200 cals so restricting though, I have to eat so little for lunch to be able to have a decent meal for dinner!0 -

Pssst! Yes, you are imagining it ... take your meds. (JK, of course.) I am getting in quality PROTEIN (upped my percentage over the recommended MFP), Veggies and eating clean at 1200 or so calories a day ... feeling GREAT and losing weight. I am working out, not feeding my body easily accessible carbs so it's going after the fat stores and burning fat ... not muscle. At least that's what my trainer and my doctor's dietitian says happens.0 -

Don't jump from 1200 to your new calorie intake at once.
If you have been eating at 1200 calories for an extend period of time your metabolism is screwed. You need to slowly add calories back in. I don't know what your macros are but you can start with adding carbs at 15-25 grams per week. You're going to add some weight back on but that is natural.
Trust me your body and your mind will appreciate it.
The goal is to establish the highest threshold possible. You need to start taking notes and slowly make changes.0 -
I tried eating 1200 when i first started, and yeah no go. I am now eating anywhere between 1500-1700 (ok I net that most days) and sometimes with more exercise up to 2000 (my tdee is up over 2000 i know this and bmr is over 1500) and ironically, volia!!!!! I lose weight, maybe not as much as i like, but i can work with it, and i am okay with it :bigsmile:0

I stay, for the most part between 1200 and 1500 a day and eat soooooo much food. It's amazing how much I eat and all this week I'm at a deficit of 200 or so calories after exercise. I think alot has to do with what you eat and what works for you. I am small and don't need alot of food. I make the best choices I can, while keeping my budget (single mom, school teacher, teenage boy to feed) in mind. I don't by into starvation mode at the 1200 calorie limit, I am in no way starving and eat so much....everyday!0
