From what I can see we Canadians are way more low key about Thanksgiving and are not consuming nearly as much as our American cousins. Less eating, less traveling, less shopping...I look at Thanksgiving as a harvest festival not an excuse to indulge and go over the top. That's reserved for the NHL playoffs....
Epic win right here! I know turkey day for me still involves turkey and its still a big family thing but I think I eat/drink more and see more relatives during NHL playoffs than the rest of the year. Now if only they sort their stuff out for this year alredy dammit!

We have a reputation for being nice so we wouldn't rub it in anyone's faces about how much better we do it in Canada.

Also, Tom Green was amusing when he had that cable television show. Once he snuck into an art gallery and hung his own painting prominently. Then he went back later when it was busy with paint and brushes and started making changes to it, right on the wall. There was a foot chase, IIRC.

He had a side kick whom he tortured mercilessly. His parents didn't fare much better.

Well, see, in my neck of the woods, we do... We kind of invented it and (I don,t know why) but are proud of it. Opposite of celebrating THanksgiving, where it speaks french, we have gastronomic food AND poutine but no Thanksgiving. Go figure!

Ever tried Foie Gras Poutine? I dare you!

OMFG - they make that???? I would die and go to heaven!!!!

    what do y'all eat?

This year I hosted our Thanksgiving dinner. I did a turkey, with stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, spinach salad, garlic brussel sprouts, whole wheat buns, carrots and made both a pumpkin pie and an apple pie for dessert (with real whip cream)

Other years we have thrown cabbage rolls, sweet potatoes, parsnips, ginger carrot soup, and cheesecake into the mix. Some years we don't do a turkey at all.

I love this post. It's funny how right after giving thanks for everything they have, Americans have Black Friday, a day of indulgence and shopping :P

    Hockey - yes
    National Anthem - yes

    Health system...are you kidding?!?

Access to specialists? Not without a referral by your family doctor, assuming that you have one or can get a new one if yours retires or you move to another city (problem) or province (worse).Time to see specialists is measured in months, mainly because telling someone that their appointment is in a year and a half sounds worse than saying 18 months.

I can get an MRI for my cat more easily and quickly than I could ever hope for myself, although if I were suspected of having some type of serious condition, my wait time could decrease to say, 6 months.

    You really have no idea...

Yeah, our health care system is a mixed bag of good and bad.

Fortunately if we can go across the border if we have something urgent and are willing/able to pay out of pocket. I wonder if Obamacare will affect Canadians more than Americans? Heh. (Not really trying to start anything here - just a little joke.)

And we do get many services in a timely fashion without out of pocket cost. It's all rolled into taxes, really. But that makes it manageable.

    Ryan Reynolds anyone?

    Not to mention:

    Ryan Gosling
    John Candy
    Rachel McAdams
    Alex Trebek
    Elisha Cuthbert
    Jim Carrey
    Michael J Fox
    Anna Paquin
    Dan Akroyd
    Evangeline Lily
    Pamela Anderson
    Nina Dobrev

Oh and nobody in Canada eats poutine, at least none of the cool cats. We just make it and get Americans to try it when they come here.

But as for the real topic, I was actually thinking that there isn't as much hoopla about the Canadian Thanksgiving feast as there seems to be for the American Thanksgiving.

    Don't forget Drake......(irritating voice)
