What's chocolate and healthy? Or low-calorie?

  • My favorites:

    1. Better Oats Lavish Dark Chocolate Oatmeal (160 calories AND it's breakfast. Yum)
    2. Silk light chocolate (90 calories for a cup, excellent with cereal)
    3. Kind Plus peanut butter and dark chocolate bar - 200 calories I believe, can also be a breakfast meal.
    4. Luna - Chocolate chunk - This is my favorite flavor, caramel nut brownie is pretty good. Pretty much all Luna bars taste like candy bars but are only 180-190 calories and can make a light meal

I really hate dark chocolate. My mom always recommends it. I know it's a healthy, good option though. An article said having a piece or two a day is actually good for you! I just... can't do it. Or maybe I just need my mouth to adjust to it like mustard.

then you're not addicted to chocolate. you're addicted to sugar.
  • Skim-milk Jell-O Pudding cups are a good choice! :)

I really like Ghiradelli Milk Chocolate Caramel Squares. I have 2 a day, sometimes 3. They are only 60 calories each! You can buy them at Walgreens, Walmart, most grocery stores, etc. I usually buy a pack a week, it's not even $5.

Organics Green&Blacks is a fave of mine, and the Lindit Exellence (both at 85% dark).

Any chocolate is fine though, I guess. Most chocolates have roughly (roughly) the same amount of cals as nuts in weight. You could even make your own chocolate bars with eggs, sweetener and cocoa powder - double points if you have protein powder; you can make some awesome chocolate muffins/brownies/bars.

OMG I am SUCH a chocoholic. Like, I seriously need to go to meetings.

Anyway, I love the 100 cal packs of stuff that include chocolate. The chocolate popcorn is suuuuper good, for one. Also, try making yourself a coffee with a spoon or two of hot chocolate mix (or a mocha, I guess. Haha). That or a glass of chocolate milk usually satisfies me.

Nakd bars. They are all yum, but they do a chocolate one, and a chocolate orange one. Oh and a mint chocolate one. The plain chocolate one is made from dates/cashews/raisins/cocoa and thats it. 35g/135kcal

    They really are awesome :-)

I have hot cocoa almost everyday. I make mine by heating a cup of skim milk, adding 2 teaspoons of cocoa and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Get some protein from the skim milk and it doesn't add that many calories.

Oh God, I'm a chocolate addict so I understand. You just need to show self control and it's easy to fit in a chocolate fix every day.

I know you said you don't like dark chocolate but it's worth learning to like it. Why? Milk chocolate is just so much more addictive than dark and it's easier to eat large amounts of it. It contains more sugar which only makes the cravings worse. (I'm not being scientific here, just my own experience)

Go for a 70% or lower cocoa chocolate which contains other flavourings you might like such as orange, mint, almonds, or anything to help take some of that bitterness away. Once you get into dark chocolate you will love it, but it's not as easy to eat a whole bar as it is with milk chocolate.

I banned chocolate from my house to help with my cravings. Well, all chocolate except some very expensive dark chocolate I keep in the fridge (so it takes longer to melt). It means I quite literally cannot afford to eat it all and I have to make it last!

I LOVE Green & Blacks! Maya Gold is a lower cocoa 'dark' chocolate (55%) with flavouring (orange and spices) which could be a good place to start.

    Yep what they said ^^

Dark chocolate. But really dark, not the Hershey's kind that's still loaded with sugar. Your grocery store should have some that are a little bit darker -- meaning less milk and sugar. They're not too expensive and they give you a bigger, thicker bar. :)

We buy dark chocolate chips and mix them into a jar of unsalted peanuts. A capful is roughly 1oz of nut and chocolate. Not so low calorie I guess, but pretty healthy. My favorite ever day snack :)

Nature Valley Protien Chewy Bar - Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate, 1 bar

Has 190 calories and 10 grams of protien.

these are tasty. I also like the Kashi Dark Mocha Almond Bars

Hot Chocolate can help with the cravings and won't blow your calories out of the water. We have an Options White Chocolate mix here in the UK that is 37 cals a serving I think. They do lots of other flavours as well.

Chocolate Milk is a good post-workout drink :)

    Basically, I'm addicted to chocolate.
    Addicted!
So, what's something that is chocolate and tastes delicious but it healthy or just low-calorie?

All I can think of is expensive things.
Like, chocolate protein shakes. I mean, I will buy a jar of it soon but in the meantime, what's an alternative ?

I found these and they do the trick, especially as a lte-night OMG I NEED CHOCOLATE fix... :)

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=14904285&findingMethod=rr

It's a sweet dark chocolate, and the crunch makes it satisfying, at least for me.

Chocolate coated Almonds. I believe made by Diamond. So yummy. Just a thin coating of cocoa powder w/sugar on almonds. It's really good! And very few additional calories from plain almonds. Totally worth the purchase!

    Cocoa+Roast+Almonds.jpg

These things taste awesome, almost exactly like Coco Puffs.

I love Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds!

Green and Black's chocolate with sea salt. Just a square or two is really satisfying. I also like Galazy Bubble hot chocolate at the moment. I wouldn't say either of these are particularly healthy, but they are relatively low calorie.

I eat one Lacey's Cookies Dark Chocolate Almond ($3.79 per 8oz container at Trader Joes) almost every day. There are 120 calories in each cookie.

Cocoa is not high fat bars have added fat.

Actually plain cocoa powder is ~22% fat but only 0.5% sugar.

There is as much added sugar as added fat in your average milk chocolate bar. For example Cadbury Dairy Milk (the most popular here in the UK) contains 57% sugars but 'only' 30% fat, the former being from the milk and sugar itself
"Milk** , Sugar , Cocoa Butter , Cocoa Mass , Vegetable Fat , Emulsifiers (E442, E476) , Flavourings , Cocoa, Sugar: trade in compliance with Fairtrade Standards , **The equivalent of 426ml of Fresh Liquid Milk in every 227g of Milk Chocolate , Milk Solids 20% minimum, actual 23% , Cocoa Solids 20% minimum"

If you live near an Aldi, their Moser Roth chocolate comes in a bar divided into 5 little 25g portions and they have 70% and 85% dark choc with all manner of scrummy flavours like mint, orange and almond etc. Helps with portion control as they are individually wrapped. :)
  • If you control your portions, you can make it "low cal".
