This is a great post - thank you. I've reached the age and have 'dieted' so many times that this journey is a lifestyle change for me. I refuse to give up anything I really want. I may not be dropping pounds at a fast rate, but I am happy with my loss. It helps that my husband is on the same page as I am. My mantra is: Don't give up what you want Most for what you want Now! If I really think I need it, I eat it. Then get over it and move on.

Chips and super hot salsa...I'm like addicted. But proud of myself that I can eat one serving rather than 6 at a time (:

Oh and pizza. I eat pizza like 3x a week.
  • I too eat white rice. My wife is Cuban, getting rid of white rice would be hazardous to my health.

I refuste to give up beer.

lol.... However, I do feel the same way about White Rice. "getting rid of white rice would be hazardous to my health."

Idk if any of you have heard of Takis...but yeah. I swear I'm addicted. It's not like I refuse to give it up...it's that I think I'd die if I did.... :P
  • coffee

I have a new fancy shmansy coffee maker and it's my last indulgence. I can't let go. I heart you coffee forever and ever. Just you and me. :)
  • Agreed! I haven't given up anything completely. Something like Dr Pepper (regular) I just have once a week. Somethings I can just substitute for a lower cal/fat version. Other foods that aren't good for me at all I just only eat them when I really really want it. Like everyone else has mentioned already portion control and paying attention to what you're putting in your mouth makes all the difference!

I love pizza...when I crave it though I get the Lean Cuisine one so I know it will be portioned. I also ate it with a banana...I started to eat regular oatmeal and then I add my own brown sugar in but it doesnt taste as good. Once Im done with this huge can I got, I am buying the good oatmeal (which is still only 100 cal per serving) Chocolate is my weakness and while dark is better, I only like milk choclate...and I wont give that up I just make sure its portioned as well!!! :)

I've been on a diet for a year and a half, and i had to make so many different changes and swapping my favorite foods for healthier versions that i eventually ended up giving up foods i've never thought i would ever give up.

for everyday food i was told not to eat cheese and dairy but i'm not giving those up. I'm not supposed to have any soy product either because i'm on a thyroid medication, but I still use my soy sauce every once in a while.

But, it's the snacks I'm not ever giving up. The eventual: peanut butter teaspoon, dulce de leche (milk caramel spread), chocolate, ice cream, and any kind of sweets and candy. I try to keep them for my cheat day, but nothing happens if i eat a tiny bit of them on an everyday basis.

You don't need to deprive yourself to lose weight! Just schedule when you're going to eat those foods and keep an eye on the portion size. If i see that I'm going to have a very social week then i leave those fave things for those days instead of having a cheat day.

    Coffee and coke zero.

Pretty sure I'd die without caffeine. Probably because people would kill me for being a miserable *****.

    Pizza
  • you can have all of those things just in moderation! last night I had a McDonald's ice cream cone. i take my kids to mcdonald's for ice cream every friday if they've had good grades. I'm so stringent the rest of the week, why not reward myself with an ice cream too? best of all they're only 170 calories.

i'd say whatever you don't want to give up is ok to keep but maybe pick one day a week to have it and use portion control. that way you get your fix without blowing your diet out of the water.

I just use moderation. I can't give up Ice Cream. I love it. But I eat less and now I buy natural ingredients versus all the artificial stuff. Not only am I an ice cream addict, now I'm an ice cream snob! lol

    I love your post!

I have fast food once a week (and today's the day!!! Yay!!!). I refuse to take anything off the table, I would have given up by now if I had to do that to have success. So I still eat things that taste good, I am just more aware of how much tasty stuff I can eat. I (luckily) also love my veggies so I can have a small portion of tasty food with a big portion of yummy veggies and easily stay within my calories. That is the key to my "lifestyle" change. Consuming cans of powder and living off of seeds and nuts would not fit my life and would never be maintainable. I also say "screw" the ratios... I could never make them work out right! LOL

I haven't given up anything, just watch it now. But I will NEVER give up regular pasta. Wheat pasta is just nasty, no matter what anyone says.

Definitely bacon, dairy and red meat. I can cut down, but they will NEVER be completely out of my diet.

Chex mix, frosted animal crackers, peppermint bon bon ice cream, bagels with cream cheese, and gummy candy. They are all the key to my heart, and they're not leaving any time soon

I am very lucky, I legitimately prefer brown rice to white rice, high fiber whole wheat bread to white bread and so on. It took some time, but now I can't stand white rice or white bread.

The only naughty things that have stayed consistently in my diet are white sugar and processed meats, though, now I eat a lot of turkey hot dogs and things like that.

I adore dark chocolate, hate the candy bars at the checkout lane, just too sweet. So, I guess for that I'm lucky, most of the time I honestly prefer the healthier option as the tastier option. I love popcorn, don't care about chips anymore.

I've gotten really picky about food I like. I'll eat icecream, but it has to be amazing icecream, not just the normal grocery store fare. Bakery items have to be real homemade treats, not anything with a chemical aftertaste.

When I was pregnant I had to cut back drastically on salt in an effort to curb high blood pressure due to preeclampsia. Since then my sense of taste has been very sharp and made a lot of foods I used to enjoy not even tolerable.
