Women get BULKY from LIFTING HEAVY?!?!

lifting20what20women20think.jpg?w=580&h=362

I just think this is as good a time as any to just put it out there that lifting as a female is good for you. Fear not, and be a strong woman!

I'll be honest, I saw this thread and thought "Not ANOTHER one?!" So glad to find out it wasn't what I was expecting. I've seen a bit too many "I've gotten bulky!" threads over the past day or 2

    Great post btw!

all they have to do is talk to other women who do it. I'm no pro, but I know I feel amazing from lifting.

    FYI

Lots of women consider the ones on the right to be "bulky" (not me)

The sticking point is how different people perceive bulky.

People who hang out with bodybuilders are going to have a way different view of what bulky is compared to people who hang out with runway models.

This only upsets you people because you let it.

I was ready to come up in here and exclaim with great exhaustion "When will the ignorance end?" and was relieved to find otherwise.

    Nice post.

Eh... They are all lovely women but none of them have the body I want. I like being soft. :) (I'm not saying this ignorantly, and I'm not insinuating those women aren't soft, this is just a statement about how I, personally, like MY body).
  • thank goodness someone finally has some sense...

Nope. Never. Women MUST lift. Period. And if they think it'll make them bulky they are stupid and that bears repeating over and over and over and over and oh! Shiny!

    True.

BUT what is annoying is when people say they "got bulky" without posting pics of themselves. In their head, just a little muscle definition could mean bulky, but to another woman listening or reading this statement, they may get scared from the weights because they think they'll end up bulky too (bulky in their head may mean like a male lifter!)

Nope. particularly for those of us who reap the benefits of lifting after years of being cardio slaves thinking that the iron was going to turn us into heaping bulges of muscle that we didn't want.

Re the comment that both are bulky. I hear ya. I think the pic speaks for itself. I also think that you can benefit from weight lifting and look more like a runway model than any of the women featured here. There's a difference between on season and off season.

Also, just becuase something has been said by someone else does not mean that I shall not shout from the rooftops with joy if i want to. The forums exist for us to participate in. And I wanted to participate today.

    Have a lovely one, eveyone!

And do and be who you want! I want to be strong. That's me!

^^This is exactly it. We are all operating with different ideas of what "bulky" means and a lot of women percieve any curve to the muscle, to be "bulky". I think that is where this entire argument get skewed.

I've shared this article many times, but it still bears repeating. Leigh Peele took some polls and wrote up several posts about it. I think it is pretty fascinating, to be quite honest, and it has opened my eyes to the various perceptions that we all get twisted about.

oh! Also! One of my greatest lifting inspirations is this lady. She's 74! And her bones are not brittle little fragments that suffer when she trips. I want to be like her when I'm 74.

Lifting is also HEALTHY for women.

Honestly, I like looking a little softer, too.

But without lifting, I was soft, smushy, and droopy, and with lifting, I'm soft, yet firm and perky. Before, I was like those leather couches at the Olive Garden, where you sink down into the stuffing and can't get up. Now, I'm like a memory foam mattress.

It's all a matter of body fat percentage.

Because I like being soft but I don't like being obese. :)

Not everyone who is losing weight wants to muscle up. Some of us just want to be healthier.

It's like you're not allowed to be a part of this community unless you lift heavy...

Like lifting heavy is mandatory in order to achieve any results...

    Really?

    Amen.

Truthfully, I suck at losing weight. I yo-yo all over the place.

But you know what? My body looks better than it ever has.

Wanna know why? Weights. Heavy ones. You pick em' up, and put em' back down.

This last year I fell in love with lifting and it shows. My body composition has changed drastically. I've even watched cellulite disappear...I kid you not!
